what are your favorite films? What still holds up today? What do you like, what don't you like?

Rashomon and Yojimbo are my favorites. The only one i remember seeing and not liking was Ran, but I am much older now and would probably love it.

i'll be picking up seven samurai next week.
the hidden fortress
throne of blood
ikiru
yojimbo
ran
dreams
top three are masterpieces, next two didn't do much for me but were still a joy to watch, dreams was just incredibly boring.

rumor has it that Criterion is releasing a much better edition this year with many special features and a new transfer (Similar to what they did with Lang's M). Might want to hold out...

Someone stole the copy of Stray Dog, at my good video store. I need to see this one.
The video store guy and I, will just have to kill or maim the person who has it.

Ikiru, Rashomon and Seven Samurai are all masterpieces in my opinion. Yojimbo, The Hidden Fortress (I just recently saw this, and it is just pure entertainment - and that's a good thing) and Throne of Blood. Drunken Angel, the first Kurosawa/Mifune collaboration is also really good, as well as Ran and Kagemusha. However, even though his later films (Ran and Kagemusha are the ones I'm thinking of) are utterly beautiful, I just feel that they lack that certain something that were present earlier.
I'm looking forward to seeing Stray Dog, Red Beard, Dersu Uzala and just about everything else he directed.

Ran, Stray Dog and Seven Samurai are my favourites. Rashomon and Ikiru are overrated and the latter doesn't stand up at all to Ozu's similar Tokyo Story.

:uhh:
If you have no fucking idea what people are talking about, it's probably a good idea not to post and make yourself look like an idiot...
Anyway, I've only seen Seven Samurai, but I do want to see some other movies he made.

I really, really hated Rashomon. I'm sorry. The only scenes I liked were those at the gate - the main story was terrible so often.
Seven Samurai was fantastic, though, and this is a weakness in my film education I'm going to chip away at soon, probably with Ikiru or HIdden Fortress

just watched Seven Samurai again:
I just have two questions about the 7...
Katsushiro seems like a "boy" and more of a an apprentice. Was he really only a samurai in training?
and
Kikuchiyo was originally a farmer child. Was he just a great fighter with a great spirit that was pretending to be a samurai? or did he really train and become a samurai at one point? It seems that the former is true since he lied about his family tree and constantly cursed the samurai.
Forgive me if the film actually addressed these questions... I just didn't see them.
So, doesn't that just leave 5 full blown samurai?

Uh seriously? I think that movie is absolutely flawless and easily Kurosawa's best. What's so terrible about the story?
