View Full Version : Simpsons vs Southpark, Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad

I have seen all of these shows and laughed during different parts of all of them. This is how I think they stack up:
1. Simpsons
2. Family Guy
3. Futurama
4. (Tie) Southpark and American Dad
Comparing
Simpsons vs. Family Guy
About a year ago I really got into Family Guy, I thought it was the funniest show on television, above Simpsons. Both shows have their classic characters:
Simpsons: Homer, Bart, Lisa, Flanders, Apu, Krusty, Joe Quimby, Mr. Burns, Comic Book Guy, Principal Seymour Skinner, and others
Family Guy: (I don't count Peter because he is too much like Homer to be considered a classic) Stewie, Brian, Quagmire (others will probably soon come)
I believe Family Guy has already started a downhill trend. While Simpsons peaked around the 4-6 season it looks like it is heading uphill again.
I've always considered the Simpsons to have an intelligent sense of humor; their interpretations of classical stories are particular favorites and lines such as "I captured a wee girl, I'm the greatest hero in English history" make us laugh and think for a second.
Family Guy's laugh comes from the shock...the "I wasn't expecting that" humor. Which has some obvious set backs because as the show progresses you begin to expect the "unexpected" because you are able to read the creators and writers mind a little more. Of course it has it's funny lines "Do these suppositories come in any other flavors." But I say that this show is going downhill because they have turned to beastiality and murder as the next source of comedy and while the Simpsons can be repetative I find few people who find the long fight scene between Peter and the chicken very entertaining.
All in all, I would rather watch a single new episode of the Simpsons to three new episodes
Simpsons vs. Futurama
Personally, I think there is no comparison. Futurama, though it takes place in the year 3000 uses a far less subtle means of social commentary. Almost ironically it is the show that takes place in the modern era that better disguises the themes.
In my opinion Futurama has never been as funny and I find it hard to laugh at a lot of their jokes.
Simpsons vs. Southpark and American Dad
Southpark is the epitomy of middleschool humor and American Dad is far too politically motivated. While the boys of Southpark provide a good look at America they lack an intellectual means of doing so. American Dad is insulting to anyone who is conservative because while Flanders is a radical Christian he also has a good side, one that can be respected. Stan lacks this and is just an animated insult to conservatives.
That's my opinion...how would you guys rank them?

The Simpsons
One of the only shows on television that requires a degree of thought or attention to understand the humour. I love watching The Simpsons in my room and chuckling at jokes I might have missed the first time because I wasn't really paying attention. You can't argue, The Simpsons really is the best animated show ever and what's more, the new episodes are (thankfully) looking like they are getting back to their best.
Best characters - Homer, Moe, Dr Nick
Futurama
Although it's intended social parodies are clear, Futurama is still a really great show and it's a crime that it was taken off the air because of a poor broadcasting special. Again, it's a show that rewards attention. The characters are really ace and for some reason, the laugh out loud moments are often so hard to predict that have you crying
Best characters - Prof Farnsworth, Dr Zoidberg, Bender
Family Guy
When Family guy is at it's best, it does compete with the best of The Simpsons. However, after Season 3, Family Guy continually looks to the shock value to get laughs. And not 'random shock', it's 'offensive shock'. There are still some classic bits of dialogue in there ("You want some tang Mr Spaceman?"), but most of the jokes rely on shock value and parodying, which makes them a bit boring sometimes
Best character - Lois, Stewie, Tom Tucker
American Dad
I nearly put this ahead of Family Guy because the current American Dad is more consistent and amusing that Family Guy. This show would be really great if they got rid of the alien and the fish, who are the most hilariously unfunny and annoying characters ever. The rest of the family make up for it though
Best characters - Stan, Stan's Boss (forget his name), Francine
South Park
This show is awful and repetitive

Overall I agree with this list. However if you are going with most recent seasons:

Family Guy
The Simpsons surpasses all of these shows. It's on the level classic Chuck Jones & Tex Avery cartons.

I've seen a few episodes of American Dad, and a few of South park, but I'm not big into either of them so it's hard for me to say, but:
1. The Simpsons (classic golden era)
2. Family Guy
3. Futurama
4. New Simpsons
5. American Dad and South Park
There's something that makes me want to put Futurama as second sometimes for some reason, but I don't think so. And I guess I would put New Family Guy as #4, and New Simpsons as #5, but at this point Family Guy is still so general that I'm not going to.

I know what you mean, but I couldn't come up with a decent reason to put it ahead.
I can't see how people can consider Southpark a contender for first, while it's humorous it's also childish. A positive side is that it addresses everything from PETA to Mormonism to Scientology in a relatively humorous manner.
American Dad lacks any real character, few connect with any of the people on the show.

I find it funny how some people put the simpsons twice, seperating the "classic" (or great) episodes from the current (or shit) episodes, yet won't do that for any of the other show. If you going to do something like this you need to rate the show as a whole, every episode of every season and rank according to the number of "hits & misses".
1. Family Guy
2. Futurama
3. South Park
4. The Simpsons
5. American Dad
Family Guy
Low brow humour but consistantly hilarious. And despite comparisons with the simpsons it is a unique show.
Futurama
A show full of possiblities, great characters and lots of humour. Many great episodes in it's time.
South Park
Often deals with current affairs issues in a very humourous manner but still does funny shows based solely around the characters. Not above a few flops though.
The Simpsons
When it was great it was great, when it went bad it got extraordinarily bad. And unfortunately the bad episodes are begining to rival the number of good episodes. The humour has become infantile and unfunny, the characters are constantly "out of character" and the storylines are downright cartoonish. But it's still in positive enough territory to rank higher than American Dad, just.
American Dad
An average show to begin with but it's begining to find its feet. Each episode is seemingly better than the last.

Hey, I didn't mean every season of it. But seasons 1-8 alone secure that position. They could put out 20 years of "Simpsons Safari" quality episodes and those first eight years would still be the best.

I hope Rosencarl won't take this as thread hijacking, but I started a similar thread to his a couple of months ago asking people to compare Family Guy to different eras of the Simpsons, which failed to generate any decent responses and got closed for some inexplicable reason. So I am reposting it here where it is reasonably relevant.
What would be your rankings for:
Simpsons Season 1
Simpsons classic era (Seasons 2-8)
Simpsons Scully era
Simpsons Jean era
Family Guy in general
(This was inspired in part by a few misguided heretics who I unfortunately encountered outside the NHC who had the temerity to suggest (shock horror!) that Family Guy is by far the better of the two, each show taken as a whole. I can only assume they must have been comparing it to present day Simpsons.)

1: Simpsons as it impacted an entire culture and was great for a time.
2: Futurama it never once faltered in quality (even if I do not like all episodes) and was a great series
3: South Park the earlier seasons were crude yet I loved to watch it
4: American Dad. So underrated and every episode gets better and better
5: Family guy. Why did they have to bring it back? I loved it before but unlike American Dad this gets worse and worse.

1. The Simpsons - (duh, laugh out loud jokes, great characters, being able to be a light hearted show and then be completely serious with genuine emotion is rare, especially in cartoons. A few episodes, such as Lisa's Substitute, could be one of the best episodes of any show on tv. Though, having Dustin Hoffman helps a lot.)
2. Futurama - Terrific animation and pretty good voice acting. I'm not usually a huge fan of really wacky humor but in this case I enjoy a good deal of it. The show gets bonus points for having an actual story arc instead of always being random storylines. The first and second shows, to me, are nothing short of brilliant, and Zap Brannigan is the best side character since Lionel Hutz.
3. South Park - The slapstick could get tiring, but eccentric performances (Cartman) just seem to never get old. Also, has some surprisingly clever and funny satire that helps the new shows to stay fresh and interesting. Though I'm betting specific ones will age and not be as appealing in the future.
4. Family Guy - It was hilarious at first. Tons of jokes and many of them were just so random and unexpected that they made me laugh. After one or two viewings of an episode it ceases to be funny to me, and the stories are so thin that there's not a lot else to go back to. After a few seasons, I've come to expect the unexpected, and even the new jokes seem bland. They're just trying to be edgy and push the boundaries, but that's all they do so now they're not edgy. They're predictable.
5. American Dad - Like Family Guy, only this was NEVER funny! Patrick Stewart is cool, but his character is not.
I'll seperate classic and current simpsons too.
Classic Simpsons > Futurama > Family Guy > South Park > Current Simpsons > American Dad

1. American dad - Based on its current status to me it is the best show that is airing out of The Simpson's, Family Guy and itself. American Dad is funny, fresh and...funny.
2. The Simpsons - The show was great in its prime but is now only on the border line of perfect, its bad years are behind them but unfortunately so are its good years. The Simpsons still has potential to reach its former glory but it will take a little time and a lot of work from the writers.
3. Futurama - Only three because it is currently dead, but soon it shall live again and will surly shoot to the top, provided the general public make an effort this time.
4. Family Guy - Has become a victims of its own success, gags are long and dull, story's are short an weak, and characters are becoming annoying and repetitive. Family guy really need a kick up the ass if its going to improve and not plummet to a horrible death...oh wait respected people (the general public) watch it now, so I guess they can write as many "um...err" gags as they like without it bothering them...do'h.
5. South Park - In a different league, it can't possibly stand up compared to all that follows before, in nether animation or writing, but its good and makes you laugh which is all that matters I guess.

It's the whole revolution thing and how it's seen alot more and lived through alot more than any other animated show it's against has been through...
Family Guy
Forever amazes me. I like the new episodes, they make me laugh more that most of the other animated shows because they appear to get any with pretty much anything, even with the FFC standing in the way. Plus, the film didn't suck, the film was pretty damn brilliant.
Futurama
The day this gets back on TV, and I know about the whole Movie greenlight, but when it gets back on tv it'll be a proud day. Futurama is a thousand years better than American Dad and South Park
American Dad
It's pretty clever, Haley looks like a real person I know whom is hot... Steve is Scott Grimes.. theres Stan Francine... Klaus is a good character voiced by the dude who does Daffy Duck (yeah) and Roger is the alien that... is pretty much the reason why I watch the show... oh and the funny storylines but yeah. Good show and much better than South Park
South Park
Sucks. Movie, sucks. Although I liked the Lord of the Rings episode.. and that one about the dance off I saw recently.

"After one or two viewings of an episode it ceases to be funny to me"
I agree with that, for some reason i can't sit through the same episode of family guy more than once. Simpsons, just has so many small jokes that you can catch later, and you don't feel like a moron after watching it.
Also, as some people have mentioned, you have to give Simpsons a world of recognition for their impact on society, networks will even show clips of the Simpsons when there shows are mentioned.
I know a lot of people hated Simpson Safari, I actually enjoyed it. I liked their commentary on Africa "He took over in a bloodless coupe, all smothering." I also liked the recent Treehouse of Horror (XVI)" probably because I loved the "Most Dangerous Game" that the second half was based off of.
I recently watched one of the 8th or 9th season episodes, and it just lacked any sort of joke that could bring a laugh.
One last thing, if you were to give two shows from the last two decades any recognition I believe they would have to be the Simpsons and Southpark. Although I find Southpark unintelligent they also have a good social commentary and cut everybody about the same. Both shows have been able to come out with new ideas for new episodes even though they have been around for so long.

2. King of the Hill - I have a soft spot for this show because I was also a big fan of Beavis and Butthead when I was a kid.
3. American Dad - I have a huge fangirly crush on Stan Smith. I have no idea why, but I do.
3. Family Guy - I didn't become a fan until I watched the reruns on Adult Swim and I kind of grew to like the childish humor.
4. South Park - I don't watch South Park quite as much as the others, but it's cool to watch every so often and since I haven't seen every single one to death, I get a good laugh out of the episodes.

I hear a lot that Family Guy is a far superior show than The Simpsons. Sure, Family Guy gives me a few laughs and some memorable stories, but the type of humor it holds is completely different than that of The Simpsons. Family Guy has many pop culture references, as does the Simpsons, but it delivers them quite differently. Most Family Guy jokes seem very "forced" to me which drastically lowers their impact. The Simpsons seems to possess a more "intelligent humor" that I find much more amusing. Both can be funny, but I prefer The Simpsons wit and satire to Family Guy's blunt humor.

I agree with what someone said about South Park being repetitive and purile, but the same can be said of current Family Guy epidodes, which really do push the shock boundaries.
No matter what superfluous complaints people have about The Simpsons, it always will remain as the greatest animated TV show ever, if not the greatest TV show of all time.
A completely realised world of brilliant, funny, touching, somehow-human characters driven by the most basic emotions, all surving together in situations that we can often relate to, but the true inventor of what we now know as laugh out loud moments and non-sequitir humour that doesn't seem disjointed, as opposed to Family Guy.
The Simpsons will always be number one because now it is a phenonemon, an entity by itself, a global hit and well-loved by millions. It has stood the test of time.
I don't see FG or American Dad! lasting to 17 seasons and beyond.

I forgot to mention Futurama and The Boondocks in my list.
I've just started watching The Boondocks and I usually have to watch an episode more than once because at times the attractive animation overshadows the writing. I pay too much attention to the art and not enough attention to the story.
I think I enjoy Futurama for the characters, if nothing else. There are so many good character driven scenes. Fry/Leela is one of the very few canon character 'ships that I've actually taken an interest in. I really hope more is done with the relationship in the movies coming in the future.

Don't be so harsh on ADAD. I like it and I've TiVOed and transferred every episode to VHS. I can't wait for Volume One to come to DVD.
The funny thing about me is that I seem to attach myself to all the really popular animated comedies and like them all passionately in some way. Each one has its charms and flaws.

The Simpsons are the best by far.
Futurama is good but it could be better.
South Park is crude but I can't look away.
King of the Hill, now thats entertaining most of the time.
Family Guy is not very creative, it's almost nothing but spoofs of movies or other cartoons.
American Dad is like rats playing cards before the ship goes down. Random and not unlike Family Guy.

1. the simpsons 1-10. gotta love'm. smart funny, great characters, plots. the later simpsons kinda suck ass :X. i hope the movie will be like the older episodes, like they said.
2. south park - one of the most intelligent and misunderstanded show on tv. lots of
people just see the silly jokes that sometimes appear. every episode has a message, it laughs at something whats going on now. and it didnt get worse later on - seasons 7 and 8 are voted the best of the whole series.
3. futurama - i just watched a few episodes, so i think it'll move higher in this ranking. but now i can say that this show is great, funny and smart. i love these characters, maybe exept the japanese girl.
4. family guy - this show is stupid, i can see it. the jokes are not in the plot, there are all these flashbacks which sometimes confuse, some of the jokes are starting to get old - Meg, and how everybody hates her. but apart that - this show is really funny.
5. american dad - okay, i can stand all the weird things that happen in South Park, i can even stand a talking dog. but a talking fish and an alien in the household ? sorry, too much guys.

Simpsons by a long way
...then Futurama, closely followed by South Park, another big gap until Family Guy, and then closely followed by both AD and KoTH. KoTh is a pretty good show, but I don't find it funny.

Huh? I thought you were a HUGE King of the Hill fan, at least, a much bigger fan than Dad, South Park, and Family Guy.
I agree that South Park is a very misunderstood show. I think a lot of the audience that would get the most out of it simply shrugs it off for being crude.

I personally feel it should go a little something like this:
A)Simpsons
B)Futurama
C)Southpark
D)American Dad
E)Family Guy
But in the end I feel that the simpsons shouldn't be compared to other cartoons because they just can't compete with the good old simpsons! ;) :-O

1. Simpsons
...for obvious reasons. I will always love the first 8 seasons. Even after having seen them 100+ times over, I still laugh. If the show stopped after 8-10 seasons, the top spot would most likely be unattainable for any other show.
But...
2. South Park
I am so impressed that this show has kept up such a high standard for 10 seasons now (well, 9.5). There have been duds, and I can see the show not lasting much longer. But if it sticks it though 12 seasons, and Simpsons continues spiralling into mediocrity, then it could become my #1 show.
3. Futurama
One or two slightly weak episodes in the entire series, but 95% of the episodes are hilarious. I can never get enough of this show. Again, this may rise up if they do more episodes, or after their movie thingy. You can't really have a bad word against this show.
4. Family Guy
Yeah pretty good but it's getting tiring after 4 seasons. 'Nuff said.
5. Dilbert
Not a mainstream one, but I loved the animated series of Dilbert. Can't believe they only did two seasons.
6. King of the Hill
I need to get into this show more. Everytime I watch an episode, I like it and promise myself I'll watch more, but never get round to it.
7. American Dad
I've watched a fair few episodes now, and it hasn't gotten any funnier to be honest. It's not as political as people make out it is. It's loud and stupid most of the time. The characters are annoying, especially the alien and the wife.

1. Simpsons - Won't ever move from this spot
2. Futurama - Not at Simpsons level, but still a great show
3. Family Guy - Idiotic random humor done to perfection
4. American Dad - I've gotten more into this show as it's gone along, it's really been improving and it can be very funny

1. Simpsons up to season 10-ish for reasons I don't think I need to get into.
2. Futurama - is amazing
3. South Park's last several seasons are amazing
4. King of the Hill - the show never lost its class.
5. Family Guy - before the return
6. American Dad
7. South Park - early seasons
8. Simpsons Post season 10-ish
9. Family Guy - after the return

But I'm saying if you were trying to calculate board opinion, you should definately list your opinion of the show as a whole. Like if theres enoguh simpsons to make the show "worse" than another, it should be ranked that way.

1.) The Simpsons. Very obvious reasons that I think everyone else already understands. It's a show you can grow up watching and love it, then watch the same episodes as a teenager and find new jokes you didn't know were there, and do the same when you become an adult (so I hope, anyway).
2.) King of the Hill. I know that a lot of people may disagree, but I love KOTH and think that it's incredibly underrated. Great character depth and smart plots, as well as a very unique sense of humor. I used to hate this show when I was younger, but now that I understand the humor style behind it, it's quickly becoming one of my favorite shows.
3.) Futurama. Sometimes this show tried a little too hard at jokes and they completely fell flat, but still, the show is more entertaining than a lot of shows. You can also tel that the show's universe was very well thought out also.
4.) South Park. Lately, it's been pretty inconsistant, but overall, it's still a pretty good show. Matt and Trey are a little big-headed nowadays, but that doesn't change that they do current events like no other cartoon does.
5.) Family Guy. I used to love it, but the episodes arn't as fun to watch in reruns because the "shock" has worn off and you know what's coming, and that's really all that made the jokes funny in the first place instead of actual humor. The newer episodes are really bad, too.
6.) American Dad. I just don't like this show. I've tried to watch it, and it just doesn't make me laugh.

3- KOTH
4- South Park
The Simpsons is the same show, I'm not going to split it up because the quality and consistensy of seasons 2-8 beats all the other shows. Also not a fan of AD or FG. I've never liked American Dad and Family Guy got awful with it's new season, even the old ones don't make me laugh anymore.

2. Family Guy - Very funny show, especially such as the RI jokes like the big blue bug (http://bigbluebug.com). Unfortunately its only funny once, old epidodes are repetitive
3. South Park - Ever since I watched "Trapper Keeper" I have loved this show

2. Futurama- good for intense laughs, but not much else.
3. King of the Hill- I've seen a few episodes of this and I actually enjoyed them thoroughly. Futurama is still superior.

i don't get people separating the pre-break and post-break runs of family guy. they're using the same exact formula they always have; it's merely stale to you all now. it didn't take some of us a south park parody to realize how immature the humor on the show has always been

Simpsons vs. Futurama
Futurama, though it takes place in the year 3000 uses a far less subtle means of social commentary. Almost ironically it is the show that takes place in the modern era that better disguises the themes.
I would agree with that assessment. For me it's:
1. The Simpsons.
2. Futurama.
3. South Park (based on the highest quality the show reached).
4. American Dad.
5. Family Guy.

1) Simpsons- Intelligent humour, constantly entertaining.
2) Futurama- Original, funny, and packs an emotional punch.

I like Family Guy, Simpsons, South Park, King of the Hill, and American Dad almost equally well. They all have their different styles. Family Guy uses interchangeable jokes. Simpsons uses more intellectual humor. South Park uses crude humor. American Dad uses political ridicule. King of the Hill uses a mix of intellectual and political humor. Yet, I don't watch Futurama. There is yet another show, though, that I think none of you have ever heard of - it is called Redwall. It is based on the books by Brian Jacques, and teaches morals of heroism and perseverence. Though Redwall is not a sitcom like the other shows, it is still a great show.

1.*The simpsons* - some episodes are worth watching again and again, eapacially the old ones. and i never get tired of them.
2.Futurama - Almost every episode of this cartoon is flawless and hilarious. it's fresh humor. i hope the season coming soon is as good as the others.
3.South Park - good offensive humor, defenitly worth to watch most of the episodes but sometimes it's boring.
4.Family guy - it would be better if it didn't have so many cut-offs. sometimes it's difficult to focus on the plot when there's so many of them. i also don't like some of the fart jokes. they're so... immature. Avarege show nontheless.
5.American dad - Not as funny as the other shows.

1: The Simpsons (Seasons 1-10) - So glad this show came along the same time I did. It's influence on culture is undeniable. Every episode has something different, one episode it's a simple emotional story, the next, OFF is fighting fobots in Itchy and Scratchyland.
2: Futurama - Probably the cleverist animated show ever. It rewards paying attention and I think it's really underrated. Like the Simpsons, the show can often display quite a bit of emotion.
(King of the Hill would go here)
3: South Park - Though the show is really funny, a majority of the episodes will date horribly. Also most of the humor seems imature, though theres nothing wrong with that, as long as the people behind it can do it right.
4: Family Guy - They show offers a few lol moments now and again but over all is nothing special. It doesnt hold up on repeated viewing either.
5: American Dad & Simpsons (Seasons 11-today) - The recent Simpson episodes just blow for the most part. However there are a few jems now and again. American Dad isn't as bad as people say but it's stilll not very good.

1: Simpsons Season 1-9:
This was a classic era for cartoons. It was so consistent, and even the sub-par episodes had their moments. Just brilliant.
2: Family Guy Seasons 1-3:
Family Guy was just brilliant. Superb even. But because it go cancelled, sorry, it takes 2nd place.
3: Futurama
Very good look into the future, but some of the later plots where a bit 'meh.' Very funny and has one of the best last episodes in TV history.
4: American Dad
Again, funny, but not good enough to be funnier than the prime cartoons.
5: Simpsons Season 13-18
Jean ressurected OFF, but not enough to stop crazy plots. Sorry Jean.
6: South Park
I've never really got into it, but some of it is funny. However it just seems to like insulting and taking the mickey out of people.

I'd say The Simpsons is one of the best Cartoon Series and one of the longest running shows on Television. I would be high to put the Simpsons anything lower than 1 in this position. I was so close to putting Futurama or South Park in font as the latest series of this show haven't been to good, it's just that I've liked all the other Series from around the time of Series 1-12maybe...
The reason I picked South Park over Futurama is because I've been a fan from the start, I love the situations the three boys get themselves into and it just makes great comedy on the Tv and makes the show unique if I must say. I saw episode "103 - Volcano" when it first aired as a young child, and when you are that young watching a show like that you start asking questions, luckily I don't think I said anything about it, all the new swear words at suck at such a young age, I thank my brother for introducing me to South Park ages ago. :)
I love Futurama, I wanted to put it second but I'm not sure if it will go on, hopefully the rumors that I've heard are true that they are coming back late 2007 or 2008. The show did so well until I think Fox stuck there nose in it all. The show is unique living in the year 3000 and having so many weird characteristics, the deliveries they make add to the episodes and give them some kind of wacky twist in adventure. I want Futurama to make a comeback...
Family Guy, Uhhhhh. It was good for the first run of Season 1-3 maybe, it lost it's spark and the random jokes got old and if you watch the new episodes, you will notice they are similar to the old episodes, and therefore making the episodes suck as there’s nothing original. Family Guy has so many wacky stories, and sometimes it can be so un-realistic and for me something I don't like that in a show... If anything, this show should be kicked off Fox and they should put Futurama back in its place.
I hate American Dad, plain and simple. It's just a lame and non-violent version of Family Guy for me. I know some people can say it's different, but it's my personal opinion. I've only watched a few episodes, around 7, and I only liked one. At least it's a tiny bit more realistic than Family Guy I guess, but I'm still keeping my opinion on not liking the show.

6. I dont watch enough king of the hill to rate it.
Simpson is one of the greatest shows alive. I enjoy all the seasons, as they show there history of humor. The animation has gotten better and better. sure the old episodes are classics. But thats what they are, classics. I alway love watching them in new situations as I have watched this show since I was a little tyke.
Family Guy has won my respect. Peter may seem like homer because of the fatness and stupidity, but Peter is dumb in different ways.
Lois goes along with peter as marge does not with homers zany schemes.
Family Guys random and cut scenes original even if borring at times.
Again, southparks sick twisted humor has the best of me and thats something
the simpsons aint got. I enjoy the different use of SP's Animation.
But as family guy has made peace with simpsons as southpark has not.some are say "No no no" But family guy has only ripped on "simpson fans" not the simpsons.
sure, I dont like the political jokes involved in American dad but its own style
has separated american dad from family guy. Seth MacFarland has done great
to make sure he did not create another "peter or Homer". I put credit towards
American Dad as its animation is a good as Family guy season 5
Sorry to say that Futurama's this low but its same score as american dad .
People say Peter from family guy is like homer, but frys stupid too.
So, frys dumb from missing the "deleta brain wave" or Peters "mentally retarded" but hell we love em all. Futurama original and has characters.
But uses too much CG (computer effects) and story lines have become boring as south park has as well.
I have only watched so much of King of the Hill but find it boring at times,

Why Futurama. Because it has a better continuous story than the other series. The jokes are there, but for the people that really observe and listen (and even more hidden ones).
I like the other series, really (well, maybe American Dad is kinda lame), but all of them have the usual kind of jokes that almost always, you laugh because of the situation, not because there's something more there.
I wrote in BASIC the list, but that doesn't make me a nerd (or who knows, I don't even know if what I wrote is correct). My point (and I don't know if somebody already wrote this, I didn't read all the posts of this thread) is that Futurama is underrated, because many people just don't get it. People that only laughs of the obvious jokes, but that's it, then they will not laugh so often like in the other series, that are funnier if you understand the jokes. Maybe you've not a lot of time to search some code or some reference, but that's what being a die hard fan means, knowing more about it. I've seen some not-so-good episodes, but the ones about to the main story, are really interesting. Hopefully the series will return if the sales in the direct-to-DVD movies are good enough.
The Simpsons are great, maybe the path was lost in the newer seasons. The core (like in the movie) is the Family, and secondly the town, Springfield. Why they have to travel everywhere and give bad impressions of other countries? Or why so many celebrities? (is ok to see them once in a while... but not so often). I know that it must be hard to keep the freshness in that show (I will die if I would want to write any kind of show), but that's when you've to search somewhere else, maybe the fans have written better Simpsons Fanfics that some real episodes (but I'm not so sure, I don't read to many fanfics).
Family Guy is nice, because has some interesting characters, great sarcasm and black humor. There's a different tone, more for adults than The Simpsons, that is perfect in certain situations. Yes, FG is based in the Simpsons, because many of us including Seth MacFarlane watched the Simpsons.
Southpark is also more adult, and is great sometimes criticizing (although sometimes a little to stupidly, but funny, why not) the US society. There's no taboos for this show, something I think is great. Also, the sarcasm is well managed in order to create what the creators try to make fun of, and at the same time, criticize in a funny way. I've seen many episodes, but I don't know if there's a timeline of events (I don't think it needs one), because over here Southpark is not shown ordered by seasons.
American Dad has some moments, sometimes is funny, and sometimes is overacted (or over-animated)... like exaggerated... Since I've not seen so many episodes of this show (I've now seen an episode in a long time), I can not say anything more.
That's all, I bored some of you... or may be not, sorry for the typos or grammar errors, I don't even write ok in spanish some times.

I never really got how people can say that Futurama is better or funnier than the Simpsons. Half the episodes are pretty damn mediocre, there's only 10 episodes or so that concentrate in actually connecting a story arc, I find most of the humor unremarkable. Can one hear the constant computer puns without getting sick of them after a while? Or silly alien jokes. Seriously, the hardcore fans claim that it's so smart of a show, when the comedy is generally unsophisticated and has half the wit that the Simpsons has.
Don't get me wrong, I like Futurama. I own all the DVDs. I know there's more to it than just comedy. I like the characters. Outside of the main three and Brannigan I don't really care for anyone else, but eh. My only beef is people who say it's better than the Simpsons. The Simpsons has it beat on every account.
Someone is probably going to retort with "YEAH BUT DID YOU GET THAT ONE REFERENCE THEY HAD ABOUT QUANTUM PHYSICS?! HAHA BRILLIANT!! THE SIMPSONS DON'T DO THAT!!!"
(Oh, and btw I'm wearing a bullet-proof vest)

I didn't notice some of the quantum physics jokes at first (I know to little about that specific subject), but some people that understood some of those particular jokes explained them, and those are smart jokes. Check out some mathematics jokes over here (http://www.mathsci.appstate.edu/~sjg/futurama/) and here (http://usuarios.lycos.es/bbrp/mathematics.html).
One of the differences is that The Simpsons is a show with jokes for eeeeveryone, but Futurama is not. I'm not against the Simpsons, I like the show, but if people (including me) say that they like Futurama more than the Simpsons, is our opinion.
The jokes depend of the point of view. If we talk about popularity, the Simpsons are on top, because is older and, as we all know, Matt is the both creator of the Simpsons and Futurama. Many people, thought that Futurama was gonna be like the Simpsons but in the year 3000, and what happens, people never like jokes that they can not understand.
Some of the jokes are not so difficult, like the alien alphabets, you just need to make and effort and decode the messages here and there. Computer and Science Fiction jokes, mainly created by and for the nerdy people... once again jokes that not every one understands... that's the difference.
If Futurama had the same easy-to-get jokes, then, many would have said that is a copy of The Simpsons jokes (some jokes maybe... the Simpsons influence us a lot), just like Family Guy is for many, 'a copy' of The Simpsons, because it is a similar family (like many other sitcoms that have a dad, a mom, and children). Family Guy is bolder than The Simpsons in the taboo situations, that's the main difference.
Over here, I used to watch about over 3-4 years ago (maybe more...) The Simpsons in FOX Latin America, and I even used to tape them, but if you ask me know, I only watch them in a local station that re-runs the first seasons over and over... When I realized that I no longer watch the latest episodes of the Simpsons in FOX Latin America, I noticed that I was not the only one, I started to see in forums and websites that many people complained about the latest seasons... and a way to correct that was releasing the movie, bringing what the Simpsons was, a f-a-m-i-l-y. I've seen many people on the net that says that the movie rocks... I think is good, but since I and many other people here can see the good old episodes every day, many say that it was like going to watch a longer episode, but no one is thrilled about it. I hope the new Simpsons episodes resemble what the movie was all about.
I guess I'm not gonna argue any more... I'm just writing my opinion, maybe I'm wrong, maybe other people is also wrong, or maybe all of us are just wrong, who knows. :o|

I thought you were a FG fan?
my opinion:
1. The Simpsons - Easily the best animated show ever. I don't need to say why.
2, South Park - usually consistently good episodes, and all of the seasons have their share of good episodes. Does satire brilliantly and offers good episode variety.
3. Family Guy - very one-dimensional show with few interesting characters. The first two seasons were hilarious, but everything afterwards gets stale because it's just more of the same.
never really watched Futurama or American Dad.

This may seem odd, but no. I love it's ridiculously funny/crazy humour, but nothing else.
To me, Family Guy is funny enough to buy on DVD, without actually liking it. The DVD's are for the humour and nothing else.

that doesn't make sense. If bought the dvd's and laugh at it, you like it.

2. The Simpsons
3. South Park
4. Family Guy
5. American Dad
I only really like Futurama and The Simpsons out of that list, but South Park is pretty alright. I don't care for Family Guy or American Dad.

No. I don't like the characters. I don't like how they usually act.
But..this show can make some brilliant stuff out of a pathetic plot..
In this show, I only care for the humour.
