teaser released today. also if you havent kept up with it theres been a video diary ala king kong style with smith and the crew throughout the filming.

i had my doubts when it was confirmed a year and a half ago, but after seeing the diary of smith showing the movie to tarantino and rodriguez i started to feel better, and after watching the teaser i think itll actionally turn out to be a good sequel, although the whole moobys plot might not be the best (honestly i just wish it were back in quickstop/video store the whole time)

Anyways yeah could be good, could be terrible. Reserving judgment for the full trailer

That teaser sucks.

What the hell happened to Smith retiring the View Askewniverse characters and moving on? I mean, I love their movies as much as the next guy, but with one failure in Jersey Girl and he falls right back on them? Meh.

theres also a note on view askew about a possibly "dogma sequel"

only flick which deserves a sequel is clerks past that=overkill

One reason Smith is doing this film is because he promised Jason Mewes that he would give him another opportuntity to play Jay if he went through rehab.

Hopefully he won't get wrapped up in the characters again and refuse to diffirentiate from the Jersey Trilogy characters.

the way i see it, smith's films have gotten steadily worse each time out (in a metaphorical staircase of quality, if you will), so i don't see why this one should be any different just because it attempts to latch on to his best movie.

yeah, you really do need to see the first clerks before seeing this. and since they're all connected to each other, you should watch mallrats and chasing amy too.

i've seen chasing amy, doesn't really fit in with the style of clerks (from what i've seen of the c2 trailer) apart from jason lee's starring in both. mallrats, again, i've heard a lot about, mostly from that jason lee thread a while back. so can someone explain this to me: are they a saga?

pat
04-04-2006, 02:12 PM
they're not really a saga... they're what smith calls the "new jersey trilogy". the three movies are three different stories. they aren't related to each other, but once in awhile they refer to the other movies since they all take place in the same setting at around the same time. so it helps to see all three to get a better understanding of clerks 2.

Faaip de Oiad
04-04-2006, 02:16 PM
Its not really a saga the only way they are linked is that they all take place in New Jersey and Jay and Silent Bob are in all of um.

^Sorry about posting this I should have hit refresh first

George
04-04-2006, 02:16 PM
i sort of understand that. smith being the writer/director of the films? they obviously have to be written by the same person, right?

pat
04-04-2006, 02:19 PM
yeah, smith wrote all of the films he directed.

and i have to echo what gravy said too... i thought at first clerks 2 was unneeded and unnecessary. still kinda is, but i'm getting excited about it myself. it looks like they could pull it off and it'll be a worthy sequel.

2 days away.

I don't know if anyone has heard about it, but Joel Siegel was at the NYC Critics viewing of Clerks 2 and walked out 40 minutes in, yelling about how the movie was "fucking disgusting" and "the first movie I have walked out of in 30 years". What a fucking asshole.

Now, here is where the story gets a whole lot better. Kevin wrote a long blog about this situation on his myspace page, and was on Opie and Anthony today talking about Siegel. One of O&A's producers got Siegel on the line to defend himself, and Smith fucking bitch slapped him. Fucking AWESOME audio. My hat's off to Kevin for this. Listen here:

Meh...I didn't like that interview. That was no battle of wits, it was Kevin Smith harping over a petty little thing, with a bunch of other guys laughing about Joel Siegel's age and writing style while not even letting him speak. It seems mean-spirited, classless and undeserved to me...more like a bunch of teenagers bullying an old man instead of someone actually getting owned.

well, to be fair, Siegel's being disruptive at the screening was rude and unprofessional, so it isn't like he's a poor innocent victim here. but i did think the clip dragged on a little long with smith basically just saying "it was unprofessional" over and over again.

Dante's romantic subplot isn't nearly as funny as the original's and it tends to drag the movie a bit. Other than that, I thought it was fantastic. Randal's debate on Star Wars' superiority to the Lord of the Rings trilogy is hilarious. Funniest movie I have seen in a long, long time. Also the best film I've seen so far this year. My thoughts...

-If you go into this expecting something on the level of the original Clerks, you'll be disappointed. If you go expecting something that's meant for a wide, commercial audience, but still definitely a Kevin Smith film, you'll be fine.

-My main problem with the film (I can overlook the single plot hole) was the pacing, which contributed to the film being WAY too short. They spend 20 minutes or so on the climatic scene (which is done PERFECTLY, each joke funnier than the last), maybe 15 on the immediate aftermath, and then, poof, the movie's over, and it's only been 90 minutes.

-The BEST thing about the movie, on the other hand, was (or were) Jay and Silent Bob. It's unbelievably easy to write for those guys, and a nice twist was thrown in this time.

-As for humour, it's different. The original Clerks had the 'contractors on the Death Star' argument, and Randall reading the list of porn films in front of the 5-year-old. Here, the arguments were over ass-to-mouth (which lasts all of two minutes, and they manage to miss THE most obvious setup for a callback later on...), and LOTR vs. Star Wars (which wasn't all that good). However, the two running jokes (Anne Frank and porch monkeys) worked great.

-Some of the dialogue seemed straight out of the playbook of a Seinfeld or Corner Gas. Dunno if that's a good or bad thing.

-Kevin Smith has the right idea in liking Canadian culture, but he's picking the worst examples. First it was Degrassi, now Alanis Morissette???

just got back. totally not what i expected. i thought at first it would be just another clerks, but it was a fresh installment to the saga. on one hand, it is just clerks with a bit more of a dramatic touch to it. on the other hand, it goes to show how far kevin smith has come as a filmmaker. it managed to be heartfelt while at the same time still being hilarious, sometimes even grossly hilarious; such as the..."interspecies erotica" scene at mooby's

outstanding. i'd go as far as saying it's almost as good as the original, albeit in a different way.

Phenomenally funny. Pretty much everything I would expect of a Kevin Smith movie - amazing dialogue, interesting characters, unique situations, typical conversations, and a ton of irreverent humor. I loved the little little references to things like GoBots and C.H.U.D. I know a good portion of the theather - the 14 year olds - didn't get a lot of those jokes, but they were subtle and they were good

It was neat to see a Kevin Smith film in theatres finally. (Jersey Girl does not count) I had just gotten into his films about a year after Jay and Silent Bob SB came out (my sister and I loved Dogma and watched it quite a few times in '99-01, though)...and I really wanted to watch one of his films with a full audience.

I mean, can you imagine sitting through the original Clerks back in '94 (when I was eight) with a full house? Well, today, I came just as close. The audience applauded for Jay and Silent Bob, and cracked up at almost every single joke, which was a consequence due to the broken sound system that drowned the sound out for the first fourty minutes of the movie. (I'm sure because of us laughing so hard we probably missed thirty good jokes) The writing seemed to combine the insight of Chasing Amy (which I still argue is not a comedy, but a drama) with the conventional style of Mallrats and Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back (the ABC musical dance number, anyone?) with the controversial talk of Dogma (porch monkey 4 life) with...Clerks. A perfect blend of Kevin Smith's films.

Just the way I wanted it...

I went to a 9 PM showing and the place was almost a full house with a few open seats here and there. I thought it was a very funny movie, with Randal and Jay and Bob being the highlights of the movie. They were my favorites from the first one as well. A couple things bothered me like some people have already mentioned, but the laugh out loud moments make up for it. The crowd was all over J&SB, Randal and Elias and the donkey scene. I have to say though that I think Smith should grow up as a director and take on The Green Hornet next. He's already written it, so he should direct it. It will really prove if he's a real time director or a director who can only make films based on pop culture, sexual inuendo and characters he created 10 years ago. These characters are great, but it's time for something new. Except for an animated Clerks movie which was promised awhile ago. I would still like to see that because I have the old series on DVD and it's still hilarious.

sweetmercifulcrap

It was great, just like everyone said.

But, Mr. Plow, kevin smith isn't THAT talanted. That pop culture, sexual inuendo thing you talk about is about as good as he can do. Even he knows that, and admits that...Jersey girl? Clerks came at the perfect time, it broke "mainstream" indie films in 94 when other cult indie films (pulp fiction) were doing the same thing. Purely good luck and I think he should stick to what he's doing. With new characters, new sexual inuendos, and more donkey shows.

I enjoyed this film... for very differen't reasons that I like the original Clerks.

The original Clerks was accidental genious, you can rarely duplicate that. Clerks II is much more mainstream, sex jokes and offensive word humor... but I found myself laughing along to most the movie.

It was enjoyable... and I was glad to see the old characters from Clerks that I like so much... but it was clearly a different style of movie from the first Clerks.

I truly fucking loved the movie; minus an awkward scene or two (mostly Scwalbach-related, his wife really can't act and shouldn't be in his movies) it was close to perfection. Took everything that made "Clerks" what it was - the on-the-dime turns from vulgarity to seriousness to wackiness, the Dante-Randal friendship, etc. - and just made it bigger and classier. Truly well-written, fun, funny, and altogether good movie.

i'm not talking about whether or not it was forced or honest or not, it was just possibly THE biggest cliche line in the history of cliche lines.

Maybe your right, sweetmercifulcrap. He's great at delivering laughs with this movie, but I thought he did a pretty good job making Dogma and Chasing Amy as more well rounded films with a good story, dialogue, comedy and drama. I think he has potential to making better overall films, not just sex jokes and J&SB.

The plot for this movie isn't original, but it doesn't matter because it's made to make people laugh. And when the film slows down to have serious scenes with Dante and his manager and fiance, the movie really boggs down for me. Clerks II is not Smith's best work (which I believe he stated in an interview that he thought it was). The movie feels really short, and it gets really dramatic at the end with Dante and Randal, which, as Randal would put it in his words, is so gay because we just want to see these characters talk about Star Wars and ass to mouth and not how they love each other in a hetero way. Clerks is still supreme, but Chasing Amy and Dogma are right there in my book because he used a lot of time to make those movie with enough laughs, drama and use of a great story. I think Smith can be a good filmmaker. After Jersey Girl, I suppose he just wants to stick with what he's good at. Can't blame him, but I still would like to see a Green Hornet movie.

I disagree that all I want to see is Star Wars and ass to mouth; if Clerks really is your favorite, you like it for far different reasons than me. I love the geek discussions (which were resurrected in full glee this time around, also), but at the same time there was so much simmering dramatic material throughout Clerks, that came to the forefront in very controlled doses that made the entire picture legitimate and meaningful. And all of that is allowed to fully flourish here, and it works beautifully. This was so true spiritually to everything in the first film, and I really don't mind that the dramatic parts were allowed a bit more of a spotlight; after all, it's ten years later, and a bit more seriousness should be allowed to enter the proceedings.

Edit: That being said... I'll agree that the fiance-Rosario-Dante portions were the weakest in the film; but Dante-Rosario wasn't weak, and what it fueled in terms of Dante-Randal seriousness was pure gold (and those parts were basically flawless.)

Is there anyway to not show Gilmore's posts. Reading them makes me want to commit mass genocide.

-Pillow pants was a little overrated.
-The dance scene with the nun and about 20 other people was not needed .
-I loved that there was only 2 or 3 call backs/ref. to past movies.
-The "danger danger, my shitty acting is ruining saga" was a little hard to watch
-I think a lot of people missed the scene where Randal and Dante are running outside to talk about the pregnancy that Elias has a piece of paper duct taped on his back that say "porch monkey 4 life".
- Taking back porch monkey/Randal's grandmother was a racist and the Star Wars vs. LotR conversation was two of the best scenes Smith has ever wrote.

With all that said:
1. Chasing Amy
2. Clerks
3. Clerks 2
4. Mallrats
5. Dogma
6. JSBSB

just got back from my second showing and enjoyed it even more this time (first showing on friday it was so crowded and people would laugh way too much and it would allow me to miss some jokes)

really didnt like the emma character, i dont know how she was randomly in mooby's during the donkey show scene either.

randal was just flat out amazing, from his look during the pillow pants sequence to the porch monkey stuff flat out great. I really enjoyed seeing the softer side of randal when they went to ride go carts.

the becky character was better than emma but stil not caitlan enough for me. i didnt enjoy the whole love triangle subplot but then again i dont think i ever have.

the ending was probaly the best ending to a comedy movie i've seen in a while, the fade out into black and white and to see smith's mom reprising her role as the milk man.

throughout the whole movie i was waiting for silent bob to have some profound dialogue and after he poked fun at jay i was satisfied. the silence of the lambs spoofs were dead on and amazing.

overall i thought it was one of the best movies ive seen in a long time, and probaly the best sequel to a comedy movie ever.

also did anyone stay for the credits? some of the thanks you's were really funny.

Funny, because he had that on his back when Dante went in to tell him the news. Most people at the show I went to noticed it then, so if they laughed when it was revealed, I'd guess most didn't laugh the 2nd time it was seen.

I watched it last night and I was impressed overall. That scene with Randal and Dante talking about the pregancy is way over done. The spinning camera was annoying as hell. It wasn't as good as the first, but I didn't expect it to be. Pretty good, though.

Better than the actors physically walking around in a circle, like in "Sith"

And it made the scene even more tense/exciting; tipped you off that this was some really important stuff going on. Totally with you Milhouse

Was it just me, or was Rosario Dawson in the dance scene one of the most attractrive things I've seen.

that aside, it was a very funny movie. Clerks was a classic, so comparing it to the original is hardly fair. probably what clerks would have been like if Smith had more money.

finally saw it tonight and i was very impressed. it's been a while since i actually couldn't control my laughter during a movie. not smith's best film, but still very good. i've always found his movies to have at least one cringe worthy scene where the dialogue feels manufactured/labored/etc. this one had plenty, especially in the more "romantic" scenes (not to give anything way). also, elias had too much camera time for such a … throw away character whose purpose is mainly for others to play off of ... he was really only useful as a comedic device towards the end of the film, when they quit with the transformer/bible thumping jokes. donkey scene had me laughing my ass off ...

with that bitching aside, brilliant move casting rosario as becky. in terms of acting, she stole the show. not comedically, but in delivery. she saved some poor emotional development with a quality performance. definitely want to see this film again .. and that surprises me since i didn’t have very high expectations before i saw it.

Great Great movie, so it two nights ago and there was a good amount of people there too. It still had alot of the elements from the first Clerks but was unique in its own right. I didn't really like the dance number but I agree with those of you who mentioned Rosario being beautiful, she came off as very cute with like perfect tits, haha. The climax of the movie with the Donkey Show was flawless with excellent jokes such as the black police officer walking in and seeing Porch Monkey on Randals shirt. I loved the ending with them opening up the Quickstop again and going back to black and white, the milk maid was a great call back. Excellent movie 10/10
