those who were/are fans of the short-lived TV series, check the story...

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=4775

if you liked The Naked Gun but are unfamiliar with Police Squad!, think of it as The Naked Gun 0.5. IMO it's funnier than the big-screen versions, mainly 'cuz Leslie Nielson plays Drebin with more deadpan & less slapstick. Anyway, here's hoping this classic show finally lands in my DVD collection....

I wonder what kind of extras (if any) will be on this...hoping the supposed John Belushi outtake is included. Truth be told 'tho, at this point I'm just happy getting the episodes on DVD, extras or not.

one of my favorite Police Squad! rapid-fire exchanges of dialogue....

Drebin: Can you beat the champ?

Boxer: I can beat him blindfolded.

Drebin: What if he's not blindfolded??

Boxer: I can still beat him.

(trust me, it's better onscreen with Nielson)

I wore out my VHS copies, now all I have is a 10 year old 2nd-generation copy originally taped from Comedy Central, commercial interruptions & everything...I'm long overdue for an upgrade. Besides, this series just belongs in my DVD collection....

"We'd gotten reports that hundreds of cows had been senselessly slaughtered in the area, but I couldn't find any evidence. I stopped off for a hamburger and checked in with headquarters."

I am getting this.

Hmm....I wonder what pricing would be like, for just six episodes. I've never once seen this show, but I've actually laughed several times just from reading the quotes in this thread. Think this would be good for a newbie? Does anyone still air this show (even just on certain occasions) so I could check it out?

I think it has aired on cable a few times, but I've heard it was edited beyond recognition.

Definitely. You must have seen The Naked Gun movies. They're a hell of a lot funnier than those, there's literally a joke every few seconds and none of them miss the mark.

what Luke said. Every once in a blue moon, A&E has been known to show all six episodes, and of course Comedy Central occasionally airs 'em as well.

I always liked the supporting cast from the TV series slightly more...Peter Lupus from Mission Impossible was a better Nordberg than OJ, and Alan North made a good Ed. Oh, then there was Johnny the shoe-shiner, a hilarious character who Drebin got all his leads from....the movies never used Johnny, but on the TV series he was definitely a "go to" character.

"There's been a wave of gorgeous fashion models found naked & unconscious in laundromats on the west side. Unfortunately, I was assigned to investigate holdups at local credit unions. I was across town doing my laundry when I got a call...."

Actually I have yet to see Naked Gun...evidentally I'm pathetic.

But a joke every few seconds sounds good. I'll have to check this out. Oh, and is there a laugh track?

A lack of a laugh track is the hallmark of a great TV comedy (usually).

Exceptions: Seinfeld, Raymond, Cheers

if you haven't seen Naked Gun yet, I recommend it (at least the first one, anyway). However, not seeing it before seeing the TV series could be an advantage of sorts, since an occasional joke from the series was redone in the movie.

But if you're a fan of Airplane!, then Police Squad! is a must-have, end of story....

Ah, say no more....I was thinking of asking if it was like "Airplane!" actually, given the quotes in here. Looks like it should be a good buy. Also good to see there's no laugh track (I almost can't watch shows with laugh tracks anymore, because I've been spoiled by the ones without. Not counting non-narrative shows like Daily Show of course).

Samuel L Bronkowitz
01-06-2006, 04:58 PM
yeah, a laugh track would've slowed the pacing to a crawl. The first episode has a memorable "Who's On First?"-type exchange of dialogue in one particular scene, and they never coulda pulled it off with a laugh track.

A typical sitcom coulda milked an entire season out of those six episodes....

I know I said I wouldn't bump this again, but my damn online service had crapped out for the last few weeks, so I couldn't give my two cents' worth right after I watched it. I was quite satisfied with how the DVD turned out, but what really impressed me unexpectedly was the 5.1 surround mix......nicely done, especially considering they coulda settled with a 2.0 mix & no one woulda said anything. Only letdown of sorts was Robert Wuhl's commentary......he seemed more fond about another PS episode he was involved in, and he just didn't seem too prepared in general. Anyway, gotta give it a 5/5.......

Never saw the show when it aired. who did? But I bought this DVD based on loving the films. Watched the first two 'sodes and couldn't stop laughing. This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
I love the wig gag in the first episode.

I'm showing my age, but I actually saw two of the episodes on the first run. I would've seen more, but I had some BS after-school obligations the same night they aired. When I started seeing previews for The Naked Gun many years later, needless to say I was extremely stoked (although I still wish they kept the original Nordberg). Even after all these years, I never get tired of watching Police Squad! or the original Naked Gun (the sequels were OK too, but not on the level as part 1).

Glad you liked it, DTB......seeing you're a fan of Airplane!, I figured it'd be a slam-dunk for you......

DotheBartman
12-07-2006, 12:27 AM
Yeah, definitely. Airplane! is one of my very, very favorite movies. I just have always admired the timing of the gags, and the fact that the gags come so quickly and yet I can't really think of a gag in that movie that doesn't basically work. Some jokes are better than others, but I can't think of any joke that just makes me think "eh, that was lame." And it's just my sense of humor in general I guess, the over the top nature with everyone taking the ridiculousness 100% seriously.

"Police Squad!" is just so right up that alley. I haven't watched all of it yet but I love it so far.

I got this and was slightly dissapointed to be honest, it's funny but it's just got this slightly dry atmosphere to it, and I see some of the gags, know their funny, but it just doesn't quite make me laugh. not to mention the number of jokes that are repeated every epiosde, that would have been best of only happening once.

Funnily enough, I was at a best buy yesterday and saw this, and considered buying it because I love the first Naked Gun movie (haven't seen the others). After reading this thread, I'll buy it the next chance I get.

Leslie Nielsen is the king of saying ridiculous things completely seriously.

Have to agree with HT. It was some what dissapointing, especially after I remembered loving the episodes so much. I honestly liked the first Naked Gun more than any of these. I mean, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them, but not as much as when I first saw them. These didn't really make me laugh out loud at all.
