I mainly buy the seasons for the episodes, but the commentaries are a nice extra. However I found these commentaries to be the worst of all the other boxsets. They are normaly very funny I did not laugh once. I also found them boring and was for the first time glad when they were done. Was I the only one who felt like this?

I'm only halfway done the commentaries because I'm trying to watch everything on a disc before I move on to the next (episodes first, then commentaries, then extras) and so far I love the Mirkin ones the best. No offence to Bill and Josh because they provide a bunch of great info, there's just a lot less energy in the commentaries in my opinion. Plus they sorta have low voices so the commentaries seem quiet.
I felt the same way when I first started listening to the Al Jean and Mike Reiss ones. See I started with season five so I had gotten used to Mirkin but I did eventually get used to Jean and Reiss so I'll get used to Oakley and Weinstein, after all, they have another season and they seem to be eager to please. The thing, though is after the next set, we have to get used to Mike Scully for four sets before going back to Jean.
I don't hate Mike Scully as much as most people do but even I find his voice having little appeal to me and I'm not looking forward to that.

I loved them. Bill and Josh really know their Simpsons, and I found them just as funny as any other commentaries. David Cohen in particular was hilarious on the commentaries he was on.

they are good
I liked the commentaries. Very informative. I listen to the commentaries not because they're funny, but they're informative and take you deeper into the episode, but a little humor never hurt anyone. By the way, the worst Simpsons commentaries were for the Season 4 DVDs, in a lot of them they barely talked about the episode and all they did was talk about Conan O'Brien and kiss his ass.

All of the Conan ass kissing ones are terrible, except for the Homer Goes to College one, where Jim Brooks says what we're all thinking "JESUS CHRIST!". Anyways, onto the season seven ones. They're good, but not as great on the whole as the season six ones. The animation-centric ones are my favorites, and my favorite stories on them are the ones by Wes Archer in the Bad Neighbors ep, and Greg Daniels in Bart Sells His Soul. It was neat that they had Bill Oakley's wife and son in the 22 Short Films commentary as well.

with the ass-kissing and praising sometimes i don't want it, but sometimes when there's a great joke and they're talking about something else i actually want them to say "i thought this was great". They didn't even talk about 1 of my favourite bits of the show's history - Bart skating down the mountain in "Bart's girlfriend".

I'm liking them fine so far Bill and Josh seem pretty funny to me, more enthusiastic than Jean and Reiss with better nerd knowledge. Not as funny as Mirkin but a lot more informative.
Is Rachel Pulido, Bill's wife ?
Jeremy

Yeah. And they talked about that skateboard thing, just in more of a joking manner. I'm always amazed at how smooth the animation was during it, and that commentary had some great bits in it, like Susie Dietter saying that you just know that someone has put a coupon in the collection, and before that, David Mirkin saying that his inability to find a woman evil enough for him was a major problem in his life.

They repeated themselves a lot this time out. How many times did Oakley and Weinstein have to mention the Troy McClure movie idea? Or that they wanted to "bring the show back to the family?"
The commentaries are always interesting, it just gets on my nerves when they same the same things every episode.

They didn't repeat themselves as much Jean or Mirkin though.
I thought the Season 7 commentaries were pretty good. You could really tell that Oakley and Weinstein truly enjoy each of the episodes they worked on, and gave a lot of background on them. I thought Susie Dietter and David S. Cohen had a lot of good information too.
The only gripe I had, at first, was that I thought Bill Oakley talked a little too quickly. Oakley should consider a career in the rap music industry... ;)

does Gorening still find the lamest things funny? It was a good thing that he started hiring writers, if he wrote for the simpsons i don't think it would be my favourite show. (judging by what he thinks is great on his commentary)

I thought Matt had pretty good taste in which lines/scenes he found funny.
“My eyes! The goggles do nothing!”
“I call the big one bitty.”

Mirkin was the worst for repeating stuff. I couldn't count how many times I was told they love the film "The Graduate", and that every part of the creation process adds another layer to the show and knocks it up a notch.

I've only heard the first few commentaries, but I like them all so far, except for Lisa the Vegetarian. The whole thing just turns too political, with them bragging about how many awards they won from "animal rights" groups and such. It would be nice to have a little balance on one like that, have atleast one person speak up and say "I'm going to go get a juicy steak right now, see you guys later.." ;)

I thought the disc 2 and three commentaries sort of slowed down after Mirkin and were a bit more quiet. Still good but I wasn't laughing until A Fish Called Selma and then on.
Interesting point, they think Homerpalooza is the season finale and they say it's not as good as the beginning of the season because they're pretty tired by then. Then the next episode, "Summer of 4'2" which IS the season finale, they say is one of the universal favourites. I found that funny.

I loved them, but the whole way through I thought that Bill talked much more than Josh. I have to say, I didn't find them as memorable as the Season 6 ones, but on a humour side. They were incredibly interesting.
And I absolutely loved Josh saying that Much Apu About Nothing aired in 1966 :D

I thought they were just like all the others. They talk about the episode, things they did to prepare for it, and other random shit.

Just like the others, I really only buy for the episodes and it's something I have to do 1 whole disc at a time in order to get through.

I thought that the commentaries were very informative although IMO the mirkin commentaries are funnier.

Bill Oakley took over them, (not in a bad way) in the same way Mirkin did. I found him a little less funny than Mirkin, but he didn't explain every single joke, like Mirkin, which was a huge bonus because this has been winding me up for the past two seasons. But overall Oakely was good. Josh Weinstein was too quiet, I bet he would've been just as entertaining. Matt Groening was his usual self, quiet, with the occasional girly laugh and saying "This is one of my all-time favourite lines/episodes/act breaks etc. David X Cohen (or should it be S?) was as great as the Futurama DVDs in the few he appeared in. I like it that Yeardley Smith bothered doing some, she's very entertaining and more voice actors should appear. I like the fact that Bill Oakley brought in his wife and son for the 22 Short Films commentary, although they were quiet. And of course Jeff Goldblum was a great addition and he was quite good when he did speak.

I have only seen about 5 or 6 or so far, but from what I've seen they've been pretty good. I notice Matt Groening argued about a couple of jokes, and said he had to be convinced with 1 of them. All this really makes me ancitipate the Scully commentrys. Season 11 will be very intresting, if he's on the bad episodes.

I quite like the season seven commenteries; Bill and Josh's voices are nice :)
Seriously though, I found that these commenteries were an almost perfect ballence of humour, infomation and nerdiness. I didn't like Mirkin's lot, as he seemed to talk about 90% of the time, and most of that was to explain jokes that we understood anyway.
Jean and Reiss' sounded exhausted to me, as if they were only there because they had to be. The early ones had lots of long pauses and the latter ones were just full of Conan praises.

The commentaries are... insightful. I do enjoy listening to them and it's nice to see Yeardly was in a couple in season season commentaries aswell....

Yeah, I agree with that Scott. He likes the Graduate, we get the picture. :P
I've not heard any of the commentaries from Season 7 yet because I dont have the set.
But the thing I'll say about all the commentaries that I really like it when Al Jean does them. He funny. I dont know why though, Mike Reiss too. S5 & S6's Illustrated Commentaries are a laugh too. Especially when Wes Archer went nuts with the "Producers over here" crack. I liked it in S6 when Matt Groening was stating characters he created, "Creator of Bender..." and Mirkin's Reply, "Oooh..." he was moaning about it in Treehouse of Horror V. Hmm.. I dont have a very good attitude to Mirkin do I?
Bill & Josh's are cool. Very informative, I have high hopes for S7.
Anyone care to PM me some spoilers?

Those illustrated commentaries are quite underrated, they've got a lot of fun points to them, and give you insight into their minds. It's also fun to hear everyone in the backgrounds (like Matt Groening) laugh their asses off during them.

You just reminded me, I can't believe I didn't point out the worst thing about these, no Jean. He's a fantastic commentator, pity this was the only DVD without him on it.

I love the commentaries. They are so much fun to listen to. But the voices should be a bit louder than the show (louder than already) because sometimes its hard to focus, and start watching the show! But the commentaries are so awsome, and its almost like your talking to the people (dont ask me how) and you're all on the same level. The illustarated commentarys are awsome too. There should be more of them.

I still enjoyed the commentaries, though they have become a little tired on the recent seasons. I think they should have more input from the cast on the commentaries. Even better would be an "in character" commentary from all the regular cast. I can't believe they haven't tried that idea yet. It would be perfect when the DVDs get to the "Behind the Laughter" episode, at least.

I always watch the episodes first (usually with deleted scenes), then watch them with the commentaries, then watch the rest of the special features. I love the commentaries, to me they make the DVD. So far, my absolute favorites have been the season 3 commentaries.
Season 4 was way too ass kissey, and I remember thinking "what the hell" when one of the guys talks about Homer's penis in Treehouse of Horror III.

For me, the most memorable season for commentaries was season 3, and the worst was season 4. Season 4 had some of the greatest episodes, and they were much more interested in talking about how much Conan O'Brien did. Season 7 is a return to form. I have had a great time listening to them.
I like hearing about the guest stars. How Glenn Close could not do Homer's annoyed grunt, so it was done by another actor. How Laurence Tierney acted like a complete nut, just like he always did, and how the cast of The Simpsons hid Paul McCartney's lintil bean soup recipe in the ending credits. Good stuff.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the commentary in 7. If we are trying to compare and contrast season for season, I would certainly say this season is on par, if not slightly ahead of past seasons.
Clearly Jean/Reiss, Oakley/Weinstein and Mirkin all have different styles. But I don't think any one group is any better than the other. I'm looking forward to some new faces in upcoming seasons as well.

I thought they were great as usual. It's pretty clear that Oakley & Weinstein clearly know a lot about The Simpsons and had some great stories to tell, heck even Wes Archer had a really amusing story to tell. Jeff Goldblum's appearance was kinda surprising though, I didn't see that coming.
My only gripe was the lack of cast participation, I would love to hear more thoughts from Dan Castellaneta, Nancy Cartwright, and Hank Azaria.
I enjoyed the commentaries. I was watching the DVD last night, cant recall the episode, but they mention the fact that Last Exit To Springfield was actually heavily re-written, saying that after mentioning that its the general consensus on the internet that it's the best episode.
Jeremy

That was during the Home-a-diddly... whatever commentary, with Vitti saying that the Last Exit rewrite was an unhappy one, and then Susie Dietter said that it was her favorite episode to be an AD on.

I missed the voice actors input, I mean Nancy in the season 3 commentaries was an excellent change of enthusiasum. However Bill and Josh gave more insight to the show which was what I wanted. I would've appreciated it if they stopped more on some of the more classic moments and gave their thoughts on them - rather than talk over the top of it and then go back and mention it.
Season 3 commentaries were the best, but these are definitely an excellent bunch.
The commentaries are great! I've only got the Disc 4 ones to go, but so far theyve been excellent, especially the 138th Episode.
