View Full Version : The Semi-Official "Good Simpsons Sites" List
Jolly Bengali

Unranked. Sites that are describing themselves as "closed" will not be included. If I've forgotten anyone with a good site, do not take personal offense and a thousand apologies.
Brief Note - If a site is basically a near-complete or complete "guide"-style site, it is not eligible for Frozen-In-Time. Examples include Simpsons Math or Guide to Springfield USA.
Feel free to add suggestions for additions or organization below. If you have feedback you don't want everyone to see, PM me.

any chance you can seperate this by type, like the top 100? it might make it easier to find stuff.
this should be a sticky. but yeah, that list is good; it's good that included Simpsons Central.

Considered it. Mayyybe... there's some vague feeling like it should be this giant mashed-together, jumbled, unordered list with no semblance of organization, but you're probably right.

globat.com is pretty awesome when it comes to prices.
i paid for a year worths back in january for 53 USD, then upgraded my package to 10gb/300gb transfer for a one time fee of 30 USD.
i was paying more at oeck and compactvision, for way less.
it's about 6.90 usd a month when you work it out

It's good stuff.
I'd move The Legitimate Businessman's Social Club and the Milhouse File to the Defunct/Dead section since they haven't been updated for years.

Milhouse File was actually brought back with a new design (wasn't it?).
Jolly Bengali
09-24-2005, 02:55 PM
I'll do so, but maybe I'll rename Defunct/Dead to "Frozen", just to be a little less mean.
And Milhouse File I put under frozen since still no content updates.
but my mom thinks its cool :(

On the bright side... sites in the more sparsely populated Frozen list will probably wind up getting more visitors from this then one buried in the active sites list.

Thanks for putting TCB in. I will update it with alot of content when I can get the internet at home. I would have done it in college, but the bastards in my college have blocked it because of it being a "blacklisted URL"
some updates to the main page of the milhouse file today so you can't technically call it frozen :)

Brad Clarke
09-29-2005, 11:54 AM
lol, but true. After they took away the ratings on design, content etc.. It wasn't really a competition. It wasn't really in the beginning. It was more of a rating, there was no trophy. lol
Jolly Bengali
09-30-2005, 09:48 PM
I think he means more the contest to succeed the top 100, which is a pretty embarassing activity for people to engage in.
hi i'm (somebody) with (site that nobody's heard of) and i'm making a list with (another guy nobody's heard of)! so any similar lists you're making, stop making them because i thought of it first!!!
seriously folks, if a popularity boost is all you're after, try improving the sites you've got. when your post about your new list is more of an introduction of who you are and what sites you own then you're not the right person for the task.

Hey, how about this: Everyone who wants to makes a top site list! I didn't realize there could only be one of every type of site. The best one will, oh my fuck, be the one people go to! There used to be a Top 50 and the Top 100, the Top 50 stopped being updated and closed, so the Top 100 became the only choice. Based on who all is saying they're going to make a list site, I'd say most of them will never start or will never update, so all of you make your sites and see what happens. It's no surprise to me that everyone wants to make a list site now, because it seems like a really easy thing to do. It really isn't.
If none of the others work, fuck, I'll do one. I don't care, I've got time.
Radioactive Man
09-30-2005, 11:40 PM
Making the site is easy. Ranking the list without getting hundereds of complaints is hard.
If it means anything to anyone at all, I do know who mikeymansimpsons and damien are and a little about the site they are making. But yeah, that post did make a bad impression. I think they just intended to let people know they were well underway on their link site before the top100 closed.

its called a links page. sites have had them forever. you have one, i have one, we all have one.
the only difference is they're going to list every site that asks them i guess, which means you'll have to weed through to shit to find the pick of the crop. i know what i'd prefer.

Both updated. SW will probably be going down again soon if Nick Laws can't get his shit together with my account.
i didn't know where else to post this but destination: springfield appears to be soliciting spyware in the form of regcleaner. i dont know if this is by choice of brian suttis but it's absolutely disgraceful, considering the popup manages to get past firefox's popup blocking feature. i tried the site in IE and was informed of a popup but the browser blocked it for me.
please dont let the community go this way. if brian needs extra money to pay for all the bandwidth he's just added, this certainly isn't the best way to go about it.
and if this is some mistake on my computers part, i apologize, but no other sites i'm visiting are giving me spyware popups.
EDIT: on further research it appears that nedstat/webstats4u are responsible for these popups, due to a policy change as of september 1 they are allowed to show what they want and they will show selected popups at random intervals. i suggest brian and anybody using this stats service to stop doing so.

ah, so thats why you can't see it. how do you actually plan a design for your site? do you draw it down on paper or just see what comes to your head when you look at an image you could make?
i dont draw anything. i dont plan anything. its usually spur of the moment inspiration like what i'd imagine a good artist or song writer does.

As I use Opera, I recently noticed some form of popup being blocked, but when trying to open it, it wouldn't. I had no idea the severity of the popup and thus, ignored it.
Anyhow, thank you to Adam for pointing it out, and as of the next few minutes, the webstat4u will be gone. Sorry for any inconvience caused.
Also, I'd just like to make it clear that I pay for DS 100%, and would never include ads (even Google's) in an attempt to make money off of a fansite.
do you have a contact address on your site because i couldnt find one when i needed to tell you about the stats adware. just happy you found my post.

At the moment, I think it needs a little bit of work to get there. I realize this isn't supposed to be that exclusive of a list, but I'd really rather not dilute it either. Too much of the content is either copied or just straight video files. Maybe in a bit, it's off to an okay start.
Sorry :/

The second and much more likely is Marco's Simpsons: Realities (http://realities.simpworks.com). The best. :)

Springfield Library looks like it should be a good site, but I was unable to access any content but "Other Sites", all the links seem broken. Fix that and sure.
Groening Fanworks it's very difficult to get at any of the content due to the menu structure, a lot of the pages seem unfinished, and what's there doesn't seem particularly extensive. So no, despite it probably being a good site for those who are used to it and in the know.
Simpsons: Realities is a really good call though, I'll add that right now.

Well that would be because I've not finished transferring all the old content from the previous version of the CMS.

Top 100 is same as I saw... Gallery has a total of 3 working pics, in .zip format... Arcade is "coming soon". Needs work, apologies. This really isn't intended to be a super-exclusive list, so I'm trying to rely on people to self-select here before requesting, rather than forcing me to say "keep trying". You really need a stable base of real content before I can justify putting you on. Keep at it.

For this, the issue isn't the presentation or the content, but rather that it's all illegal video files. Nothing but. I know No Homers occupies a rather strange niche of C&D protection, and I'd like to try to avoid messing that up... but basically, I'll just put the question to everyone - should a video clips site go on here? PM me if you don't feel comfortable, just trying to set a precedent of some kind. most of the same sites from when i used to be in the simpsons websites scene (the old simpsonstv.net which expired :( ) Also, springfield weekly completely ripped on my having bart free falling in the design, with exactly the same frame which is somewhat strange. I'm not saying they copied it intentionally at all but it seems to be the exact same frame from that bart song on the season 2 dvd and the pic isn't even right... the inside of his tshirt sleeve is blue and his left hand is messed up not to mention they went for standard colours rather than the colours used on the original video. I'd change that pic from the main design tbh because it looks flawed, isn't placed right and is starting to look a cliche. Maybe i'm being bitter about it though, sorry.
Anyway, has the community completely collapsed with the fall of the top 100? I don't see many sites making much effort and there's no competition or linking anymore. I think it's better that way in some ways because i had this feeling i was original in making a simpsons site before i discovered there was a whole community of hundreds of people doing the same thing. I think it'll spark more interest for new people making sites.
Jolly Bengali
01-18-2006, 06:30 PM
You're entirely right about the flaws in the pic, I knew they were there from launch day. Those are merely a result of not having the original .fla file for the grabpic I had made (well over two years ago) and being too lazy to remake it.
As for ripping the design... had no idea it had been done before. Certainly not an intentional rip, because frankly I had never been to simpsonstv.net even though I've been around for quite a while. You may be right about a design change, especially given that since I tried everything in xhtml 1.1 and the latest css explorer is fucking up with it quite a bit. We'll see.
I don't think the community is dead exactly, but there is a bit of a lack of energy. Part of that is due to the collapse of Maggied and the lack of any real uptick in the NHC web end of things since then. Another part could simply be time and the quality of the show, another reason could be that there were a lot of fantastic sites that closed/stopped updating due to the age of their creators, another could be that the top 100 closed, another could be that there are different priorities now in sites that are splitting people by content, another could be that simply there's a generational gap that isn't going to be bridged anytime soon. There's a lot of reasons why it may be diminished, but I wouldn't say collapsed.
I'd love to chat you up more though, nice to see someone from way back around. Stick around, please.
Edit: Scott, did all of those. Thanks man. Sorry for 5 days late.
fungi
01-19-2006, 05:30 AM
no no no, no design ripping from you! certainly not a design rip, just a pic rip :P I musta made that pic couple of years ago too, maybe we made it around the same time so no hard feelings mate. You probably have been to my site because it was one above you in the top 100 (somehow), but whatever aye.
I would definately change that pic though if i were you because it doesn't really fit in. I've seen designs from your site that i thought were really cool but some people didn't really like (the light blue, white and yellow one i think) so I know you can make something really cool.
Anyway, i was never really that involved in the community at all so you probably don't remember me. The reason i stopped making my site is because i lost interest in the show and i didn't wanna spend all my time updating with new stuff aswell as getting the old stuff upto scratch. To be honest, i wish they had just ended the show several years ago so that i could actually say that it died the most amazing show ever and so that i could just easily finish my website.
Jolly Bengali
01-20-2006, 04:34 AM
Heh, well fair enough. Still re-designing due to the browser errors.
Show-wise, I think having it around is fascinating from an analytical standpoint, just because we really get to see what works and what doesn't. So many bad years almost makes it more interesting. But if there isn't a quality uptick soon, and a serious one, the plug should be pulled. My bet would be after Season 20 will be the end of it.
Rich Uncle Skeleton
01-20-2006, 04:43 AM
Hey dude, welcome back. I vaguely remember your site, visited it a few times.
I do agree with you about the lack of effort in the community, in fact half the sites these days are just created for poor quality episode downloads.
But there is (hopefully) a major "top sites" web site coming soon, which might bring back the sense of competition in the community.

[B]Hey everyone....I've had this site since December of 03 and I was wondering if you guys could check it out and email me telling me what you think of it. I'm 12 years old and I love the Simpsons....the design isn't that great but that's because I'm using Frontpage. I'd really appreciate it if I got some feedback. I'm trying to make my site popular but it's really hard right now. The URL is www.simpsonsource.com. email is bryanrg@ptd.net. thanks

That's not too bad actually. The design is really plain, but you already know that. The content looks pretty solid so far, keep working at it. And just to let you known, using Frontpage isn't an excuse for a bad design, you can have an awesome design and still use Frontpage.

It's okay to start a new thread if you want, you know. Your biggest problem with the site is that is doesn't display in any good web browser:

Never encountered that before.
Anyways, for your site - I think that your opinion articles are rather weak, mainly in argument but somewhat in writing style. This is extremely forgivable, since you aren't even in high school yet, but perhaps focus in other areas until the writing picks up. Seems to have a good spirit to it and the design is solid except for the display issues, actually rather pleasant to look at.
I was unable to find simpsonsmath.com on the list. That's a crime.
This has been rectified, and you're right, that was a crime. I put it first to make up for that a bit.
I'll be trying to go through the list over the next few days and whittle down the list a bit in terms of active/inactive. I realize this is probably not what anyone is going to for Simpsons sites, but it's still sort of a nice reference point. Let me know if there's anything still missing or in need of updating.

I strongly recommend learning HTML it really does help, and it's easy to pick up. But if you have to use Frontpage:
Never use any of Frontpage's built in "helpers" or "site builders", because they're designed with Microsoft proprietary HTML (which is incorrect HTML that only works in Internet Explorer).
I'm not against Frontpage totally (I use it myself sometimes), But I would stick to really simple elements. Create a simple table with maybe two columns, and add the images in yourself. This sounds like horrible advice but it's the best thing to do without learning HTML...

Milhouse File, I couldn't tell on the active updates... I've done this to you before, and I apologize.
BSD the design seems new, almost certain that it was different from the last time I checked, but I may be wrong. Collecting Simpsons, I had no idea hadn't been updated in that long, that's a complete screw-up on my part. My working definition for "up and active" is that it's up and has been updated since December 1st. Sometimes sites without news updates (or prominent/dated news updates) it's difficult to tell.

Well, I was bored so I had a look at all the sites. Here are my suggestions for the list:
Site's that should be moved to down:
Simpsons-Net:
- Move to: Currently down. All the site says is "Version 4 will be here soon!"
- Last Updated: Unknown.
Site's that should be moved to frozen in time:
Cape Feare:
- Last Update: October 10th, 2005 (site is now working)
Mark's Simpsons Site:
- Last Update: January 28th, 2006 (2 months since the last update)
The Simpsons Comic Site:
- Last Updated: January 22nd, 2006 (over 2 months since the last update)
The Milhouse File:
- Last Updated: Unknown. Doesn't have a news page. However, the site says that the most recent appearance of Milhouse was in Milhouse of Sand and Fog which aired on September 25th, 2005. The Last of the Red Hat Mamas aired November 27th, 2005 and is not featured on the site, which means that this site is probably not active at all.
Thats Unpossible:
- Last Updated: January 29th, 2006 (2 months since the last update)
- The news section says: "Don't worry; we'll have this site up to date with new content and season 17 information soon enough."
Bart: The One and Only:
- Last Updated: Unknown
- The news section says: "[...] here is a temporary design made till I make the final design in this summer [...] I unfourtunately won't be updating again till the next new design goes up." This means that the site probably won't be updated again until summer.
CBG's Video Game Collection:
- Last Updated: December 22nd, 2005
Other sites that havn't been updated in over a month (sites that might become frozen in time):
Springfield Indulgence:
- Last Updated: February 20th, 2006 (over a month ago since the last update)
Bart Simpson Dedication:
- Last Updated: Unknown. Doesn't have a news page.
Digital Springfield:
- Last Updated: February 19th, 2006 (over a month ago since the last update)

Digital Springfield is a site that isn't going to be updated really often. It's a tutorial site, I add them as people send them to me. I think it should be left on the active list, and hopefully I can start updating it more often soon.
I don't think a month (or even 2 for that matter) is cause for the sites to be classified as frozen anyway. Once it gets to 4-5 months without an update maybe, but a lot of sites have owners that still care but don't update constantly.
Jolly Bengali
03-26-2006, 05:02 PM
I incorporated some of your suggestions, Nasty_b... I appreciate the help :)
Just to let you know where I disagreed... TU gets some leeway for being the longest-lived, most prominent, somewhat regularly updating character site we have right now... Milhouse File gets some leeway since I've been yelled at by Adam twice about it and Aussies have dreadful punishments for three-peat offenders... Bart The One and Only was redesigned fairly recently... one month isn't long enough to be "frozen" for a few... and for BSD I have no clue when it was last updated, but I love the design and I'd like to think it's somewhat active. I have no basis for this and I may throw it on frozen sometime.
A lot of those sites, in about a month's time, will probably wind up falling into frozen...

12/22/05 :: TEMPORARY
-------------------------------------------
This news page is temporary until my host fixes whatever problems the servers are having. The new PHP news page should be back soon.
Thats the last update on the site, December 22nd
As for grissom, I know that its a tutorial site. I'm just saying, it hasnt been updated in a while, which is why I put it in the list. Also, just a suggestion: In your tutorials section try using tables to align the left and the right, instead of the spaces. It would look better.

But, technically, it is by fans. A bunch of people have put in time to building the articles. The problem with allowing it might be whether Eric would actually consider it a site.

I still hold a grudge against wiki for its beyond-idiotic policy on fan sites... but those seem to be back up. I'll decide in a week or so when I get back from college trips. Toodles.

I was browing through maggied and clicked on Cape Feare then LMS consecutively. Cape Feare appears to just be gone and the LMS domain name has expired.

For the past few weeks, when I go to capefeare, it loads to the point where I can see the header and the navigation panel, but nothing else no matter how long I wait. Yesterday I tried again and I got a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" thing. It's too bad, I liked it.
Oh, and:
hey! simpsons-net ain't down! it will be back with a new design in a few days.
ahem - now even the Version 4 message is gone:
(ridiculously large image removed)
EDIT: sorry about the image. I should have made it a thumbnail. :(
a little excessive dont ya think?
and why does everyone flip out when a site goes down for a week? get lives.

a little excessive don't you think?
no.
Actually, I don't really care that it's down. I just kind of wanted to see it, and I was wondering why I kept getting a 404.

TSC & MSS will be coming back in the next few weeks once we sort out illegalities with the host. But they seem to be pretty understanding...they're deleting any folders that FOX deemed illegal, but have promised not to touch any hosted sites.

I doubt it, Adam probably has a life and doesn't have time to update really often. I'm sure he hasn't abandoned the site

Actually Adam not regularly updating isn't really typical for LETS...
I smell redesign, but that's me.

I sense that some big and old site (not us) is going to be redesigned soon... but i could be wrong, too. Just my 2 cents.
Anyway, I'm sure it's exam time for a lot of people (it is for me at least), so updates on most sites may be few and far between.
