America: Fuck Yea!

I have read the book now 4 times in 2 years... and I just got the new special edition DVD.

I won't claim this is a great film, it isn't. But I had people over last night and we all couldn't stop laughing. I think it is sorely underrated. If you have read the book, I think it makes it even more perfect.

The heart of the film is Christian Bale. His performance could be NO more perfect.

That might be the single, most coolest thing, I have ever seen.

The film is awesome. All opinions of the opposite must be stamped out. It captures the vapid cluelessness the yuppies from the 80s were so notorious for, as well as the pressures of the lifestyle.

"I have to return some videotapes."

"You're a fucking ugly bitch. I want to stab you to death, and then play around with your blood. "

"TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD! YOU, FUCKING BASTARD! "

Patrick Bateman: Ask me a question.
Daisy: What do you do?
Patrick Bateman: I'm into... well murders and executions mostly.
Daisy: Do you like it?
Patrick Bateman: It depends. Why?
Daisy: Because most guys I know who work with mergers an acquisitions really don't like it.

Everything else that has been said in support of AP in this thread I agree with. I actually saw it in the theatre and recently bought the DVD. I remember going to see it because I thought it was a horror film, and being so surprised as to just how funny it was. How's the book, Joe? I heard it is MUCH more graphic.

The book is absolutely incredible. If I could force everyone to read it, I would. So funny.

The scenes of murder are really graphic and resemble De Sade's writing.

this movie is severely overrated with everybody i know

that said .. uh. yeah, totally one of my favorite movies of the last 10 years

Have you guys read the book?

Leopold

Yeah, the book is definitely worth reading. I also recommend Iain Banks "The Wasp Factory", which Bret Easton Ellis drew some inspiration from.

Have you guys read the book?

Yes, and it truly is Much better than the film (which is also wonderful). One of the best books of the last 15 years or so, a must read for everyone.

It's not for everyone. Some people grow very impatient of the constant "lists"...

first time I saw this, I was confused as hell but thought Bale was extraordinary.
after seeing the new DVD, I finally get it (as much as I'm going to get) and Bale still looks great.

I really liked the book ... I also liked the movie.

Read "Rules Of Attraction" SOOooooooo much better than the movie!

America: Fuck Yea!

The Rules of Attraction movie was the most horrid thing I have ever seen. The book can't be any worse.

nathaniel

uh.. what? rules of attraction is almost as good as american psycho, dude. and both are way better than their books

American Psycho was awesome. I thought the part when he threw the chainsaw down the stairs was the best.

Am I the only one that didnt get the ending?

samsa
06-29-2005, 12:11 AM
yeah, at the end why the guy he was supposed to kill was alive?

irv
06-29-2005, 04:41 AM
i think the movie was trying to have us believe that patrick never actually killed anybody. everything was in his head. that's what we were to take from the empty apartment at the end and the lawyer who had no clue what he was talking about.

according to the movie, it was all made up. that's why parts of it were able to be so over-the-top ridiculous.

Leopold

It's a bit ambiguous, though. I got the feeling that you're could also interpret it as that nobody knew what happened to Paul Allen, and nobody really cared (or rather, they would rather sweep it under the rug). Why did the realty agent give Patrick those odd looks while he was in the apartment?

i was always more in favor of leopolds take on the ending. hence the final looming shot of ronald reagan on television. and cmon, a way fucking cooler ending than "OH IT WAS ALL A DREAM"

fuck yeaaa motherfuckin american psycho

you're out of your goddamn mind to not like this shit

America: Fuck Yea!
06-29-2005, 10:24 PM
The murders were all in his mind...

(it was never even considered a dream.)

according to the book, and I thought it was obvious in the movie..

Bump.

Just watched this Wednesday night. Incredible movie. I don't think I've ever laughed that hard at someone being murdered with an axe. Bale could NOT have been more perfect for this.

Awesome.

When I got home with my rental, I noticed it was on TV. Good thing I got the unrated version or I would have been tempted to watch the edited cut, which is probably hacked to pieces.

In conclusion, watch the real version Thrillho.

Bale is a great actor, plus he's eye candy. The movie was good, not the best ever, but good.
I read American Psycho first when I was little, then re-read as a teen. I loved the book for its attention to the minutest detail, the music sections, and just how awful these Yuppie people in his life were.
Rat in vagina......scary.

If this is the one with the chick from that 70's show, I gotta say then that this one was pretty weird. Not that it was good or bad, just weird.

It was ok. Bale was great and some of the dialogue was funny, but it's quite empty and pointless.

It is one of the most funny movies in the past 10 years... Even better ifyou have read the book.

I saw this at Sundance in 2000 -- which was an amazing experience in and of itself -- and it continues to be one of my favorite contemporary literary adaptations. I'm a HUGE Bret Easton Ellis fan, and this is the only film based on his works to get the tone (and the fucking text, I'm looking at you Rules of Attraction!!) right. The Special Edition DVD is fucking great -- I was just pissed because I had purchased the barebones edition like literally two months earlier (it had been OOP and hard to find for some time, then it was re-released not long before the Special Edition).

Christian Bale WAS Patrick Bateman...he was just so fucking perfect as "that guy."

A side note, the last time I read the book (2003 I guess), I was coincedentally playing a lot of GTA 3/Vice City. There was this one mission in Vice City that was so much like the final couple of chapters in the book (murdering cab drivers, pedestrians, breaking into a building and shooting the guards, hiding from police chasing you by helicopter, etc.), it was eerie.

The scene where he murders Jared Leto, while expositing on the greatness of Hip to Be Square is so fantastic, and probably my favorite scene in the film (save the opening shot of Bale's nakedness in the shower - ROWR).

one of the only movies I've seen that actually approved on the book in some way. I agree that it perfectly capture the tone of the book, which I loved.

my favorite scene was when he was with the two prostitutes talking about phil collins (I think) because it combined two chapters together an an ingenious and hilarious way

Film girl do you go to sundance every year?

me and my dad where wanting to go down to sundance this year, or parks city anyway during the festival to try and go to atleast a couple screenings since they're pretty hard to get into.

btw this has been moved to the top of my netflix list, after watching the machnist again in film club (i own it but still havent seen it in over a year) i have been reminded of how fuckin great bale is

My thoughts exactly!

The tone, combined with Bale, is so perfect it drives me insane. It was so powerful that the second and third time I read the book, I felt like I was watching an extended cut of the film.
