More than a few times people have asked the NHC hivemind for advice on where to start listening to certain artists, usually ones with large to intimidating discographies. In the interest of consolidating that, here you go.
Someone tell me how to get into Massive Attack.
start with mezzanine. the whole album is gold and will sell you.
then work backward.

I'd actually recommend starting with 69 love songs especially part one and follow that by charm of the highway strip but that's just me.
Could someone recommend me a second Can album after Tago Mago?
As well a second stereolab album after Emperor Tomato Ketchup?
Also first album for Neu! and Faust (the krautrock one).
I still have to get Bakesale as was recommended to me by another member.
Also I need some Welsh bands for my Wales mix
So far I have:
Super Furry Animals
McLusky
Catatonia
Tom Jones

I'm already listening to Rammstein, Orgy, & Megaherz but what else is out there that's any good?
Well, for a bit softer but still fun "metal" try Lacuna Coil. It's like an Italian Rammstein with a female lead. Start on Unleashed Memories (the one with the unreleased Halflife on it) then continue to Comalies and explore from there.
For a bit darker more ambient sound, mixed in with the same kind of industrial as Rammstein, try hunting down another german band named Wumpscut. Pure Genius. I can't really give you albums names, since I discovered this one song by song. I can give you some great songs to look out for: Mother, Soylent Green, Christfuck, Funeral Diner, and Angel, just to start with. Some might be too slow for your tastes, however.
Cradle of Filth. Straight metal. Still fun, despite being sellouts.
In Flames. I'm just getting into them myself, but I really enjoy them.
More german! Kovenant and Covenant. With a K: Straight Metal, a little Industrial hidden underneath. With a C: Techno Metal.
Um, just in case, if your not already listening to NIN, you should be. Start with Pretty Hate Machine, then jump to Downward Spiral. From there, go forward to the Fragile or backward to Broken. Avoid With Teeth.
Thats something for ya.

You've probably already gone and bought Doolittle and SR, but that's not what I recommend. I listened to Come on Pilgrim first, then Surfer Rosa. But probably new shorts.
And I think ASO's way for Pavement is the proper way to do it, but starting with S&E and going through chronologically isn't a bad way, either, except put Wowee Zowee last. I've had good experiences with that.
i want to get into arcade fire. i've listened to a few of their songs and i just don't feel anything which may be because of song choice. i love indie rock in general but i couldn't understand what all the hype was about when i first listened to them.
"beautiful" isn't how i'd explain the songs i heard.
box elder
07-14-2006, 03:36 PM
well, Arcade Fire have only 1 LP and 1 EP, and i don't think listening to either one first will make a difference in how you take to the band. i actually saw them open up for the unicorns in early 2004 and was blown away by their live show having never heard of them before that. it wasn't until a few months later that i even found the album.
and on the Pavement front, i think chronological is probably the way to go, so long as the person is willing to give Wowee Zowee a few hard listens before discarding it as an album with too much filler (which it's not).

not understanding why the arcade fire are so supremely hyped is not unusual. theyre not that great of a band

but just because they're over rated doesn't mean they're worthless. it would be near impossible not to be over rated at their level of hype, but they're still a good band.
nathaniel
07-14-2006, 06:06 PM
i didnt say arcade fire was worthless. just makng the observation that hearing arcade fire after hearing all the hype will be obviously disappointing. (and if its not, you need to listen to more music)
on destroyer:
logic would suggest someone definitely do NOT start with "your blues," as it sounds nothing like the other albums (it has no real instruments.. i believe it was done entirely with synths, and it shows). weird record
but its also the first destroyer record i ever heard and now he's pretty much my favorite musician. the lyrics are definitely as awesome and clever as any of the other records, and his voice is in top form
you should definitely get this years RUBIES. i mean thats just a given. perfect 10 album
box elder
07-15-2006, 06:11 AM
well, like i said, i got into them before i'd ever even heard the name, much less been exposed to the hype, so that might have helped me put it in perspective.
well, Arcade Fire have only 1 LP and 1 EP, and i don't think listening to either one first will make a difference in how you take to the band. i think listening to funeral first is the best idea, and while it in itself isn't too fabulous or anything, their selftitled ep is incredibly boring with one good song and maybe another that's only ok at best.

Genesis. I fell in love with 'mama'.
I would have to say “Duke” would be the safest place to start with “Phil Collins Era” Genesis.
Another option would be Genesis’s 3 disc “Platinum Collection”, which has tracks from almost every album. (including the “Gabriel Era”) This would be the best way to find out what albums fits your particular tastes. (& on the plus side a lot of the tracks have been remastered)

Make sure when download The Clash's self-titled album you get the U.K version and then get the song "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais" - which is only on the U.S version.
i would agree with you there. don't get me wrong, disintegration is a great record, but is really too long and boring at first. i suggest that getting a "best of" compiliation of cure singles is probably the best way to get into them. i'd go with galore, which features radio versions of the tracks, each cut down to the average 3-5 minute mark. and also, the singles are the most accessible tracks. after that, i think kiss me, kiss me, kiss me is a better purchase than disintegration, because it's a more fun record. but if you're into slowly developing epics than go with what nate suggested.

about the Walk - i'm sure if you listen to a sonic the hedgehog soundtrack you'd get the goods.
no seriously, I cannot help there, I'd like to know too. I haven't listened to the Cure for years but disintegration was a top album. I guess just check out their albums from around that era - early mid 80's, and you'll must likely find something similar.

the argument is essential, yeah. my favorite fugazi record is steady diet of nothing though...easily their most accomplished and fully formed album to me. in on the kill taker is very interesting and unique (amg's description of it as "like scrubbing your face with steel wool" is dead-on) but i dont listen to it very often. red medicine is awesome. end hits is best avoided. so basically get everything apart from end hits
ironically, steady diet of nothing is the fugazi album that, for some reason, i haven't listened to before. i'll take your word for it that it's great.

spoon for anyone who is interested (aso mentioned on page one)
i'm torn between "kill the moonlight" and "girls can tell" as a first so either/or unless someone can clearly put one above the other. then i'd get the newest, "gimme fiction" and after that "series of sneaks", "telephono" and the various EP's should be very easy to get into once you've got the first three.
killers and coldplay both make decent tunes - they are just overhyped. nothing bad about liking them at all.
but the point of this thread is to suggest how to get into bands that have put out a lot of music. the killers and coldplay, well, haven't. plus all their stuff sounds the same so it really doesn't matter what you get first from either.

I think this is the comment he's talking about, it's not that he doesn't understand the point of the thread:
the way poiman is going, i dont think any good music is what he's looking for
i know what he said. i'm just saying it's pointless to ask about where to start with the killers and coldplay when there really isn't any difference in any of their albums and theoretically you can start anywhere you choose.
Rekart
11-13-2006, 04:44 PM
We all know at least a third of the music people here are complete bitches and need to get the fuck over themselves. So enough with the elitist bullshit. Others have asked about bands that only have two or three releases, and people told them which was best or told them they were all basically the same. I'm not even a big Coldplay fan, or a Killers fan at all, but deshem is right. Get off people because of the music they listen to. If it's a joke, it's old, and if it's not, that's fucking sad. That's not to say there can't be discussion and debate, but there's a difference between "you suck and your music sucks" and an intelligible point.
Not directed at pat, or anyone specifically. And I'm aware I'm fighting a losing war here, but that doesn't make it any less right.

Wow, Rilo Kiley hate. Really pushing hard now, ehh? How can I ever repay you for being so much > than me? I mean, that effortless wit and... and, well, what can I say, completely perfect musical taste. We all strive for perfection, but we all must stop for a while to bow before our master, nate.
You can be a jackass as long as you want, and you will continue to be a jackass for quite some time, I have no doubt. Doesn't make your musical taste or anything else about you better than anyone else though, but you can take pride in being a dumbfuck if that's the best you've got going for you. You're no better than Curtis was in the end, you're just both fucktards in different ways.

Not exactly my point. But, I think you'd all be a little testy if your mom kept telling you - and showing you (not on, thankfully) - the new tiny thong underwear she bought. And then not understanding why you're using a "tone" when you answer.
But that doesn't invalidate what my original point was. The way to make people listen to music that you think is good is not to just bitch at them and tell them how much they suck. Suggest other music if you think Coldplay is a waste of time. Some members here need to get over how fucking great they are and how much better everything they like is, and instead of trying to get other members to understand why they're so great, get them to understand why the music is so great.

their best album is "You can be a jackass as long as you want, and you will continue to be a jackass for quite some time"
but thats not to say that
"The way to make people listen to music that you think is good is not to just bitch at them and tell them how much they suck" isnt without its merits. although the title track is more hypcritical than correct, being quite bitchy in of itself

woah, chill dude. i really wasnt pointing out anything about the music, more that i think it's absurd that chris martin was named sexiest anything.
and since there's not a gazillion coldplay topis floating around, this seems to be the opportune place to post that shit. it wasnt meant to persuade will any way about the music.
