It depends...If you include TV shows that are basically classic cartoons put together, then no...I would prefer The Pink Panther Show or any show that includes Looney Tunes shorts...Talking about more recent, real shows The Ren And Stimpy Show is the only one that has a chance to compite with The Simpsons in my favorite shows list.

If judged on consistency, no, there are a few other shows that would be better.

But, I don't judge on consistency, because I'm not going to sit down and watch the crappy episodes multiple times in syndication or on DVDs. And I can not think of any other show that has given as great a quantity of quality as that of "The Simpsons", with the huge reservoir of classics in the first eight seasons, as well as the quality episodes produced today.

So yes, "The Simpsons" is my favorite show.

Yes and no. The first eight seasons make it my favorite show ever easily, and even now its the one I put the most effort into, but there are other shows currently running that are better or more consistant, namely The Daily Show (which just seems to have the profound inability to miss these days, which is amazing for a show that has to come out with fresh material four nights a week). I'd also far prefer Futurama to current Simpsons if it was still running. But ultimately, The Simpsons gets the top spot for those first eight seasons, and my overall attachment to it being stronger then with any other show.

The Simpsons is easily my favorite show. The show has gave me entertainment for most of my life, and no new show will take that away. Is it currently the show that entertains me the most? With shows like the Daily Show and 24, probably not. But it was for a large part of my life, and the show still manages to come up with great episodes.

Seinfeld is by far my favorite show, but Simpsons is second place.

They're both equally funny to me, but the fact that Seinfeld is real and didn't often have wacky plots, plus how the show quit when they were ahead makes it my favorite show. Also, those four Seinfeld characters are perfect, they blend so well...it's an aspect that a cartoon can't have.

I really suggest you cartoonaholics watch Seinfeld, it'll change how you think about sitcoms (if it is a sitcom)

I guess I didn't word that post too well...

I'm not sure how to explain it, but since the cast of Seinfeld are real people instead of voices, it's even better how they had so much chemistry. With a cartoon you can create whatever personalities you want, but with a real show you just have to pick the actors who'll best fit.

And Seinfeld was wacky in a way, but within realistic boundaries (until the last two seasons). Of course, you have more freedom with a cartoon...actually now that I think about it, I drop that argument :P Wackiness in a cartoon is fine.

H Thompson
06-03-2005, 10:32 AM
I actually would take some live action shows over cartoons, there's british sitcoms I'd take over other animated favourites such as Futurama or Home Movies. But I just don't think Seinfeld is all that great, it still has too many sitcomish conventions that are grating, and the plots don't really have any ambition because it's all done on sets, later wackiness can be a bad thing but Simpson's they can also do much more intresting plots that are still well within the realms of plausiability.

Even in Seinfeld the live action aspect doesn't improve the chemsitry between characters because it's a still a tightly written show with conventional filming, if it allowed for more naturalistic and improvised dialouge it might do that.

And although it's kind of the point of the show and I appreciate the place for programs like it, it's completley non-satirical non-emotional, so it lacks the depth that best Simpsons have.

The characters are spoken by Voice Actors though. Animation is twenty times hard than Live action because with Live action there are just those actors controlling their speach and movements. With animation it's a huge joint effort between two dozen animators who have to understand how to translate realistic human movements into 2-D drawings AND then make it all flow perfectly along with the emotion and emphasis' added by the voice actors. A bunch of people have to put all of their minds into one character, there are a lot more elements to getting animation realistic and lifelike than any other genre. So, yeah you can make them do whatever they want, but in what way is that easy?

DotheBartman
06-03-2005, 02:31 PM
Thompson and Mira basically said what I would have. They still have to get voice actors that can fit the part, ya know.

And I'll just point out that this isn't really a board for "cartoonaholics". Its a Simpsons fan board, not an animation one. There's some people with a specific interest in animation here (including a few studying to be animators I believe), but I'd say most members here just enjoy The Simpsons because they think its a good show. The Simpsons itself is more for fans of offbeat, well-written shows with , sharp humor, satire and well-formed characters then it is for fans of animation. If there's a bias towards animation watching here, its mainly a result of live-action sitcoms being in the pits right now (I'm not a huge fan of Seinfeld, for the reasons Thompson named, but I can't even name one live-action sitcom since Seinfeld went off the air that's worth my time, other then maybe Andy Richter's short lived show).

Green_Peaness

Maybe it was a budget issue. Seinfeld started going downhill around season 6 or 7, and it was only really popular since season 5. And in live action, there are inherent limits (I'm just talking common sense now). You can't have an episode like "Bart Gets an Elephant" and you can't have dozens of characters in every episode. Also, I'm not too knowledgeable at older sitcoms, but if you look at sitcoms older than Seinfeld, there is a difference. All In the Family seemed to be the best popular American sitcom (my opinion), but just about every other is campy and predictable. If there were any other good ones, I'd like to know. Seinfeld might've been the first consistently funny sitcom for all I know.

Even in Seinfeld the live action aspect doesn't improve the chemsitry between characters because it's a still a tightly written show with conventional filming, if it allowed for more naturalistic and improvised dialouge it might do that.

I think watching the first episode of Seinfeld proves this isn't really true. The characters evolved big-time, especially Kramer. Kramer wasn't Kramer until about the third season, and it's interesting to watch the evolution...it seems purely Michael Richard's doing, not the writers.

And although it's kind of the point of the show and I appreciate the place for programs like it, it's completley non-satirical non-emotional, so it lacks the depth that best Simpsons have.

Hmm...to me, the best Simpsons don't have much emotional stuff, but to each his own. Sometimes I appreciate how Seinfeld is purposefully non-emotional, sometimes I appreciate Simpsons emotional episodes just the same (though after the 3rd season, the average episode seemed to have emotion only in the last 10 seconds)

Edit: I know I'm a big Seinfeld fan, but Curb Your Enthusiasm (on HBO) is definitely worth your time. I actually started watching CYE long before Seinfeld, it's hilarious. It's in no way a Seinfeld sequel and in some ways it's funnier. Plus, just about any other HBO show in the past 5 years is worth watching. I agree, about 99.9% of sitcoms suck

Edit#2: Mira - I think I just said that in cartoons you have more freedom...I know it's not easy. I've watched the commentaries, I know 18 hour days isn't easy!

One other huge advantage that The Simpsons has over a conventional program like Seinfeld is the absence of canned laughter.

The first major benefit is that leaving off the laugh track gives The Simpsons (and other well-written shows that don't use one: The Office, Arrested Development, etc.) a more natural comic rhythm. In a conventional sitcom, the dialogue follows a very rigid pattern: one or two lines of humorless exposition, which serve as setup for a payoff line; pause for laughter, and then back to start (occasionally the pause will be followed immediately by a second punchline riffing off the first).

Compare this with what you have on The Simpsons: The absence of canned laughter after every discrete "joke" allows humor to be layered in unusual ways. For example, if George Costanza (for the sake of argument) had said "If the Bible has taught us nothing else -- and it hasn't -- it's that girls should stick to girl sports, such as foxy boxing, hot oil wrestling, and such and such," then there would be an odd pause for dubbed-in chuckling after the initial joke ("and it hasn't"), after which the actor would awkwardly resume the sentence, which is the reason you rarely hear lines with such a multi-part structure on sitcoms that use laugh tracks. But when Homer Simpson says it, it comes out as a single, uninterrupted thought, and only when it's over can we count the multiple levels on which the line made us laugh (that Homer erroneously thinks that the Bible has something to say about girls in sports; that he thinks it's the only useful teaching it contains; and that he considers such sexist diversions to be acceptable games for young women with an interest in athletics; other implications can still be drawn). This is a more complicated, more layered structure of a joke than is possible in a sitcom that uses a canned-laughter format. What's more, it's faster-paced, packing in three jokes where another show would only have time for one.

The second is that being freed of the restriction of punctuating everything that's funny with audible laughter allows the show to include a broader ranger of humor. A good example would be the punning signs all over Springfield, which inhabit nearly every establishing shot, and can be found very often in the background, even as characters walk past and speak.

For a very typical (by no means extraordinary) example, think of the "Do What You Feel Like" festival in "Bart Gets Famous." We pan past the crowd, and as we take in the scene we see various characters, several of them in each frame, doing funny stuff, and when we the camera finally stops on the Simpson family there's a bunch more subtle things to look at and enjoy: the way Homer is feeling comfortable walking around in public in a bathrobe; his extra-long stubble and ludicrous bear-paw slippers; the self-satisfied jerk of his arms as he struts around; Marge's maternally restrained notion of "casual attire" (overalls and a backwards cap); and Bart looking about sullenly, appraising how the townspeople have all stolen his thunder. It's nothing amazing within the context of The Simpsons, whose best episodes routinely serve up moments as densely packed with visual humor as this one; but it would be impossible on a show that insists on clearly denoting every single joke cracked.

The third advantage is that a laugh track is a hokey artifact of the days when television programs were all filmed before a live audience and proudly sponsored by Palmolive. In retrospect, it's as contrived, useless, and alien a device as the ubiquitous plot-explaining, hubris-bemoaning chorus in classical Greek drama. What practical purpose it serve to have unseen voices guffaw at every other line?

Seinfeld might've been the first consistently funny sitcom for all I know.

Surprising as it may seem, television comedy did not universally suck for forty years before spontaneously becoming funny when Seinfeld and The Simpsons came out in 1989. Take a look at All In The Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, or The Bob Newhart Show. They can be hokey and even a bit predicatable at times (and they all had good seasons and bad ones), but they make up for it with great acting, well-written characters, and fairly consistent humor.

I don't think the conventional sitcom is alway such an evil thing, I did hear a point that it's almost like a middle ground between film and theatre, It's like a stage with sets and a laughing audience which can inspire actors to give bigger performances. Comedy has generally moved on to more ambitious and subtle things but I think there can still be a place for the old traditional sitcom.

An interesting point about laughter tracks is that, while I think they are out of place in certain comedies (they would never ever work in, say, The Office). I think they are often necessary for one-liner shows like Friends. I remember seeing a documentary on Friends and they showed a scene with the laughter and without - the scene seemed so flat without the laughter track. I think with a show like that, a laughter track helps because it feels like you're laughing along with other people. I can't really explain it but in a show as artificially written as Friends, I don't think it could get by without a laugh track. Same with Will and Grace actually.

Fair enough, but a show can really be smart even within this boundary. And Seinfeld didn't follow it all the time (maybe for half the jokes it did). The best episodes have a one-minute-long story or sequence that garnered laughs the whole way through (The Boyfriend JFK scene, the end of The Marine Biologist, several others).

And canned laughter itself isn't as predictable as you think. With some of the worst episodes, the audience can be uncomfortably quiet. But it really gets on my nerves when the audience claps for Kramer, I'll give you that.

Heh, I never even ansewred the thread question, but yes it is my favorite show becuase I don't think any other show balances out every aspect and element of a good show as well as The Simpsons. Nothing else I've ever seen on TV is as impressive as the best episodes of seasons 2-9 of the Simpsons. King of the Hill and Futurama are the only other shows I think are in The Simpsons league since they also are great at putting a nice mix of emotion, humor and realism into each episode. I don't understand people thinking South Park or Family Guy are better or even anywhere near The Simpsons because those shows really only focus on humor and heavily alter reality to make it a lot easier to be funny... but that's their opinion and they can have it.

That's good to know, I'll have to check those out.

If you're genuinely interested in checking out older American sitcoms (and Hydro's picks are good ones, and "The Bob Newhart Show" is especially relevant to "Seinfeld" I think), I would also recommend "The Honeymooners", "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "The Andy Griffith Show", "I Love Lucy", "Cheers", "Maude", "Newhart", "WKRP", and "M*A*S*H", just to name the better ones off the top of my head that would qualify as conventional (though same disclaimer Hydro gave provides to most of these). And speaking of "M*A*S*H"...

Same with Will and Grace actually.

...now there's a show that the inane laughing can be removed from without the show missing a beat, as evidenced with the DVD copies.

Closer to on-topic though:

I'm not sure how to explain it, but since the cast of Seinfeld are real people instead of voices, it's even better how they had so much chemistry. With a cartoon you can create whatever personalities you want, but with a real show you just have to pick the actors who'll best fit.

Well, what Mira and Thompson said. But also, does it matter though? In a book, does it matter that it's only words printed on paper that convey real people, that there's no one actually acting out whatever chemistry they may have with one another? I don't think it does, what matters to me it how the medium is best conveyed to succeed with whatever the hell it's trying to do (such as making me laugh a lot), and less with what has to be done to get there. Not trying to shortchange "Seinfeld", it is a great show, one of the last great "conventional" sitcoms, with ambitions (especially early on) I get the impression a few people are shortchanging a bit. And the four leads certainly had chemistry. But irregardless of whether a talent search is needed to find the right actors for the right part (or actors to create a part like you've somewhat suggested with Kramer) or finding people to emote properly the voices of the characters and animators to make the characters act properly, in the end all I think that matters is the end result.

No, it is not. Seasons 1-3 were classic, season 4 was good but starting to falter, seasons 5-8 had plenty of good episodes but the show had become more surreal, seasons 9-12 were a bit wacky but had some charm, seasons 13-16 are mostly either in-character and humorless and weak, or funny but stupid and shock-value-laden and crude, but there still are some classics.

Here's how I roughly rate the shows from best to worst:

Simpsons seasons 2-3 and parts of 4

Simpsons season 1

Simpsons seasons other parts of 4 and all of 5-8

Futurama

The Critic

South Park

Family Guy

Simpsons seasons 9 and onward

King of the Hill

Others shows I love:

Dexter's Lab

the PowerPuff Girls

Samurai Jack

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends

Ren & Stimpy (and I kinda like the Ripping Friends, John K. and Jim Smith's other cartoon that had some production problems and ended dissatisfing the Spumco staff)

Cow & Chicken

Rocko's Modern Life

SpongeBob SquarePants

Invader Zim (best animation of any animated made-for-TV series ever IMHO)

Fairly OddParents

Danny Phantom

Jimmy Neutron

My Life as a Teenage Robot

Kim Possible

all old Disney and Warner cartoons

earlier Rugrats

Aaaahh! Real Monsters

Doug

Hey! Arnold

Angry Beavers

Digimon

Dragon Ball/Z/GT

EarthWorm Jim

If the show had ended in, say, its ninth season, then I would probably be saying it is my favorite, but now it tends to change every month. At the moment, it is King of the Hill.

No offense, but I told you there are cartoonaholics on here!

Edit: In response to Channel Surfer - In the end, I think the point I'm trying to make is that I can relate to and appreciate real actors more than cartoon characters. This is why I said it's inherently an aspect a cartoon can't have. But I do appreciate the voice actors' work.

No, it's not my favorite it all. It used to be.

My favorite show is a certain reality show about aspiring models who are too short and too fat getting insulted by Janice Dickinson.

But yeah, I like A LOT of shows more than The Simpsons at this point.

Im surprised somebody finally mentioned mst3k. It makes me laugh just about as much as the simpsons, and its replay value is probably the best of any show. Simpsons still is my favorite, but sometimes, mystery science theater comes close.

Bumping this thread. As you can see from my sig, Seinfeld has permanently replaced the Simpsons as my favorite show. Now that I know both shows a lot better than back when I first posted in this thread (in fact that was my very first post), I think I can make a better argument why.

First point: consistency. People may point out that Seinfeld is still just a live action sitcom, and that's cheating. It helps the viewer laugh along, which is true. But those are real laughs. EVERY joke had to work, because otherwise there would be an awkward silence. You may say "but that's true with other live sitcoms, and they suck!"...well, almost every other sitcom either has a laugh track or fall back on dumbed down humor such as one-liners. Scanning through the great Simpsons episodes in my brain, there might be one or two episodes EVER that have zero failed gags, compared to probably one awkward line per every three episodes of Seinfeld. You can't doubt that if the writers could have observed an audience watching each episode of The Simpsons as they were being made (random people, not table readings), they also would have quit before the tenth season.

Second point: dialogue. No comparison, but season 8 occasionally approaches Seinfeld's level.

Third point: characters. From seasons 2-6 (and most of 7) of Seinfeld, the four Seinfeld characters might as well be real people. Everything they say shows depth, they are always in character. They are capable of having ulterior motives that can last for an entire episode, which can't be said for any Simpsons character. Homer is a great character, but he is obviously like no real human being and doesn't have nearly the depth of the Seinfeld cast.

And this kind of relates to the other points: Seinfeld did not have an entire universe to work with. If you think about it, wouldn't it be more difficult to write a great episode of almost pure dialogue than to come up with a great Simpsons episode where any crazy gag you could imagine can be used?

Since I have been watching The Simpsons for most of my life, I can't call it a "favorite." For me, it's more of a constant, by which everything else is compared. I know that even the so-so episodes will be at least mildly entertaining and I never get tired of seeing some of my favorites, whereas even with the shows, of which I am a die-hard fan (The X-Files, Law and Order, Sex and the City), I can, at some point, tire of watching them and need a break from watching entirely. It has never been the case with The Simpsons. I always know that when I sit down to watch the show, I will be entertained. I can always laugh at the jokes no matter how many times I see them (I laugh at my sig everytime it refreshes :D ). I can't do that with any other show. While there will always be other shows that I may obsess over far more than I do The Simpsons, I always define my love of a program by asking, "Do I like this more than The Simpson?" Sometimes, it's yes; a lot of times no, but it is always the constant.
