There will be two versions of Xbox Live. Silver is free (everyone gets it), and Gold is a paid subscription, like the current XBL. It looks like Xbox Live will be free on the weekends for everyone; Gold members will get it all the time, obviously. Current Xbox Live accounts will carry over to the 360 and become Gold Xbox Live accounts. Both Gold and Silver members will be able to download demos, trailers, and other content through XBL.

I probably will as well. I just worry about the first editions of these newer consoles. I have a first edition XBox and I had to replace the drive because it went bad. Hopefully the same thing doesn't happen with XBox 360.

Free online play on the XBox live network for all members is an awesome addition as well, even if it is limited to the weekends. Anyone know if they are releasing a list of the launch titles at E3?

Looks great I think. Im excited it, but I dont really think any of these new consoles are really going to bring a whole lot to gaming. I still marvel at the visuals of XB games, even older ones like Splinter Cell and Yager still blow me away. When it comes down to it, I cant imagine that these new consoles are going to add anything apart from slightly better visuals. Older generations of consoles have been giant leaps in technology that have changed gameplay. The Playstation brought us 3D gaming, and the PS2 and XB improved upon this and made genres such as FPS's and driving sims realistic, but I cant see how these new systems will change anything except make things look even better then they are. Oh well, we'll see soon enough.

Gunstar, yes there was. A group of idoitic "gamers" went to Rare and played it for the day. Then at the end of the show they all played it in front of a "rowdy" crowd. They were playing a deathmatch with flyers like in Halo. Couldn't really tell too much from the footage, but it looked cool enough.

Looking at this, dont you feel the least bit underwhelmed? This looks like a marginally upgraded XBox system. They had a teaser image that showed some intense details like individual hairs and detailed pupils and such. But look at this...I thought we were supposed to be over the top this generation?

I also saw the footage from MTV, and not one bit of it seemed intense or interesting for the matter.

Apparently this is the 360's flagship title, and if this is what it has to offer for the next generation, they really hate us. They really do.

They will be able to clean things up, and make things look sleeker. However, much of the new improvements to games in the next generation will be to A.I. and overall detail. Basically, they won't stop until games are 100% free and you can basically do what you can do in real life in the game.

Main objection is this "wow, it can stand vertically, d00dz!11!" thing that seems to be so popular, as, IMO, it looks worse when standing up (well, the PS2 does, don't know about this), and its very useless. I was also expecting it to be a bit smaller. Of course, the only thing that matters is the games.

Don't forget Banjo Kazooie/Tooie. Agreed, the gameplay is more important than the graphics, definately, but since they were showing footage of the game, so nobody could play it, only view it, then you'd think they'd at least use some FMV or something to show it off. Infact, its really surprising for Microsoft to not show of the best looking thing they have, regardless of how it plays. Unless that is the best looking thing they have, then... ouch.

Fair enough. Simply stating that it's fairly clear this is just a $400 Xbox. The $300 is "back in Playstation land", but you can't really expect to still be paying 300 for consoles with inflation and all the new tech. I think saying $400 for a neutered system and then to just get the hard drive is a silly way to look at it; just pay $400, get your cool shit, your hard drive, and you basically have what you would have gladly paid $400 for if the $300 weren't offered.

See, this is whats frustrating me. The $300 version exists pretty much only to make it look like the $400 is a sweet deal. Sure, a hard drive, HD hookup, a wireless controller, a headset, and remote are worth more than $100, but it's where that other $300 are going that bugs me. Also, both versions ship without an in-box game or extra controller; but they make sure to include acess to that X-Box Live, that you have to pay for. I'm holding out for Nintendo.

As well, the hard drive ships with emulation profiles for a bunch of Xbox titles, so you can play those with backwards-compatibility. Similarly... Xbox Live membership, i.e. Xbox Live Gold, obviously shouldn't have been expected to be provided free out of the box. It's a really premiere online set-up, and most people don't play Live who own an Xbox. Of course they're going to charge those who want to play games online, and not just use it for messages and such like Xbox Silver, for the priviledge of doing so.

I guess I'm using "membership" to mean being able to play online games, and the other doesn't really seem like "membership" to me, just access.

Realistically... you're paying for good service. PS2 online is pretty close to being complete ass. Live has a lot of tremendous features, and it's on a console, so you can't expect to not have to pay for it. This isn't a PC.

I just spent the past hour or so trading off with some other guys at the Xbox 360 kiosk at Wal-Mart. We had fun playing that pre-release demo of Call of Duty. Gameplay was so smooth, I was in love. I hadn't played any CoD game before but it took me all of 15 seconds to figure out the controls and kill a shitload of enemies. So much action going on, my mom was getting dizzy just watching. I finally quit after I got sniped through the smoke of an explosion in the distance (and when my parents started getting hungry). It happened so fast...but that was great. I need to start shopping at Walmart more often. Oh yeah, I'm kind of surprised because the system looked bigger than I expected it to...but so shiny and purty...and at least the controller is comfortable to use unlike the last one.

I bought what I would suppose was a first gen PS2 a couple of years ago off ebay. Thing wouldn't play DVDs, DVD-roms. Called their tech-support line and they said it was a problem related to putting the consoles on their sides. They fixed it for free.

yes some titles on the GC are more geared towards an older crowd, but what i ment was they have just lost sight of what make these other systems great. on line play, more 3rd party titles to deepen the the catalog, controlls, I could go on and on. There are some GC tiltes I enjoy but for the most part if a game is released on ANY other system as well as the GC I would get it for one of the other systems, mostly x box, mainly becasue the graffics are better do to a faster fram rate, and the loading times are generaly faster then even the PS2.

Did that for a Gamecube and didn't get one. Hopefully you will have more success because your Wal Mart probably isn't in a conjested area like mine.

Not every game will be compatible. Many, many games will be, but not all. If the game is an XBox best seller, you can pretty much bet it not only will be able to be played on the 360, but will be enhanced as well. Yeah, Halo and Halo 2 will be playable in HD format on the 360. They are trying to make it backwards compatible but want to add something to each game as well..

PS2 actually has the PSX chip built into it. For X-Box, it's cost prohibitive since the first one used an Nvidia graphics card, but the 360 is using an ATI.

Yeah...the way the system launches isn't the way it will be when it eventually is over. What they are doing with the new gen systems is making them highly interactive with the internet. That means that they will be able to do firmware updates and whatnot without you even knowing. More things will be added throughout the system's lifespan.

Well, I've decided to hold off at getting my launch 360. I've had some unexpected issues lately in which I have had to use my credit card. Working out the numbers and seeing how much more I would put on the ole CC if I were to get my suped up 360 with games, I have decided to either wait and use my xmas bonus to get it, or just wait until it would be ok to charge (or, hell, even use cash). So, to hold me off, I went to EB, cancelled my pre-order, and bought Tiger Woods 2006.

Now let's turn this whole thing back around to something that can be used for an actual discussion. While I'm walking out of the store, what do I see sitting there? An actual 360 with two controllers and Peter Jackson's King Kong running on it! I put my game on the counter and quickly start a new game. As soon as I touched the controller, I noticed it was a lot smaller than even an S type xbox controller, but actually more comfortable for my hands. I only played about 5 minutes of the game, which since I started a new game, was a lot of storylines. I did, however, manage to get eaten by a T-Rex ;). Anyhow, the game looked amazing and the sound was top of the line as well.

Still can't wait to get one in my home, but right now, it wouldn't be smart. That's right dan, I'm showing restraint.

brad clarke graphics are far from the biggest issue. to be honest I don't see a hell of a lot of difference in what we are playing now and the demos of what will be on the next wave of systems. point being its about library of games that interest the buyer. along with a better online gaming strategy and all.

I found out how many Boxes are getting shiped to each Best Buy. The BB closest to me is #7 on the list of stores receiving the highest number of units. Looks like I won't have a problem getting one when the store opens at 8 :D

That intro is pretty nifty. Looking at the power supply unit makes me a tad nervous. I have no idea where in the hell I would put that thing in my cramped gaming setup. teh huege lol.

It hasn't been banned in the U.S. The only countries that it's been banned in are Australia, Germany and New Zealand.

So my whole plan was to go to the Best Buy HQ not far from my house to get my 360. They always get a ton of stuff in. Last week or so I went there to pick up a DS and they had a calendar on the front door for the month with the store hours. The 22nd it said 8AM. Good. Figured I can get up at my normal time and wait a couple hours and get one no problem.
Now today, driving around I heard a commercial for some big event type thing at Best Buy opening at midnight, all the while I'm thinking, "not Richfield, not Richfiend." Sure enough, the Richfield store. I now I'll have to stay up all day and night and probably deal with much more competition.

I went to walmart with the intentions of getting a premium bundle, but of course they were out. they had one or two core systems, but in haste I decided just to wait for more premiums. Came home and read about the huge backup and waiting till next year, went back, were sold out. disappointing.

My friend waited twelve hours in the rain, but he got one. Have played on it. Perfect Dark Zero is sick, not out-of-this-world but very very fun and amazing graphics. Project Gotham Racing 3 was great graphics, not my type of racer but seemed very good. The entire interface is swank and the profiles system is a gem, the controllers are great... sorry to sound like a fanboy, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

Wireless controller seems to be flakey. When trying to recover my Live account and entering all that data, almost every time I wanted to go right, I had to hit it a couple times before it'd start moving.

I'm jealous of everyone here who got their paws on one. I just wanna say that I played one at a Target last week, and it was very very cool. I played the King Kong demo, and I couldn't beleive the way everything looked. It actually looked like Jack Black was running from the T-Rex. Amazing how video games are looking these days, and they're just gonna get better and better over the years. Hooray!

no I didn't go for it. it was there. store only received 12...just 12. 7 were still there. can you believe that shit. played a little bit of gun since it was running. fun stuff. I stayed strong. heard a lot of people are out of luck...apparently there are a lot of faulty power supplies. anyhow I will get one soon enough...they anticipate another larger shipment before xmas. or so I was told. who knows.

Next shipment expected...February next year from what I've been told by numerous people. Trustworthy or not is hard to tell, alls I know is that supposedly there have been a lot of game crashes offline and online.

the power supply seems to be the major problem from most game boards. apparently your screen goes down and when you reboot you just get 3 circles. neighbor picked it up and let me play some pd zero. was well executed. game looks good, still not in love with the character models. played wonderfully though. of course his has locked up several times. has yet to get through 2 hours of gameplay. hope its just the minority of buyers who are having system problems.

I haven't had any problems with the system yet. But I think I've only played like an hour and a half worth of COD2. All the rest of the time spent with the system on has been to watch a movie or two or short gaming stints.

Anyone else have a problem with the controller? Pressing right on the D-pad seems unresponsive and I usually have to hit it a couple times before it responds.
