Yes, it is a little early for this thread. But I know all of you have been checking on who has committed to your team and the recent March Madness has you thinking of what a college football tournament would mean for the sport. So, without further adieu, your 2005 NCAA Football thread.
Here is the first story to start us off: Spurrier vs Fatso
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2038019
so, uh, is Illinois going to be any good for once?
seriously though, hopefully headed in the right direction with zook at the helm. haven't been following the "offseason" very closely for illinois, or the season for that matter...they fucking sucked. a chance to make a terrible bowl game this year though? maybe, we'll see, but i'm not betting on it.
Northern Illinois should put together a solid season. especially with that stud wolfe carrying the ball for another season. another bowl game would be nice though. could be a rough start though. playing michigan at the big house to start the season and then northwestern. should be interesting. i shall be at all the home games though.
and with that this is probably the only time i'll post in this thread. you folks can go back to your hardcore allegiances and conferences i don't follow. unless of course U of I or NIU has a great season. then i'll come in here and post updates no one cares to hear.

illinois better get on the right track and at least have a respectable team by the time i attend there in 2006. it's going to be tough changing from a msu fan to an illinois fan, especially in basketball, but i will start by rooting entirely for the illini this football season, stupid as that may sound. i still hope michigan st does well though
edit one year later: fuck that, i actually ended up going to state

I love this game I am such a nut that I named every player over a 78 rating in the game the past two years it took about a month to finish. Then I use the draft classes for Madden I love it!
Well for my teams Texas and Michigan both teams seasons look good. I think this year the Longhorns can beat the Sooners for the first time in five years because White graduated and Vince Young is better then ever. If we beat the Fu**eyes we could win the NC our only weakness is running back because Benson has graduated but Selvin Young can take over at this time. My prediction Big 12 Champions
And for Michigan well the Big Ten is pretty good this year with us, Iowa and the Fu**eyes but Chad Henne is an good young quarterback but with Braylon Edwards in the NFL he wont be as he was last year. But some good news is the schedule is easy this year with only Notre Dame being a threat. My prediction second place Big Ten.

Meh. It's nothing what it could be. Wait till fall.
But Spurrier's retort of "oh, I'm just the coach at USC...don't pick on the little guy" is falling on deaf ears. That's the most assinine thing you can say about your own program. It means when you lose, you were supposed to; and when you win, it's a surprise.
And ESPN is already sucking spurrier's dick...airing spring practice all week live from columbia? hell, they're not the best program in their own state.

looking forward to seeing what ty willingham can do at washington. 5 wins would be nice. one of the qbs fighting for #1 is carl bonnell, who visited my english class a few weeks ago and also led my school to a state championship in '02. so i hope he gets it. but it's not looking good. he's like 3rd or 4th on the depth chart.
oh and gravy, washington-notre dame 9/24. should be interesting.

Damn you GravyMaster, there goes my making the NCAA Football threads...
Seriously though, I'm not overly optimistic about any of my teams this season. Mizzou still has the talent, and in a weak North, they may be able to win it. But, last year, they choked worse then any other team I've ever seen in multiple games. CSU had QB problems last year, and the new guy who started the last few games looked good, but he needs a better supporting group. The team is so far under it's Van Pelt/Sapp/Anderson days, it's sad. NIU lost their QB, I believe, and that will hurt them. I was never too high on Haldi, though, but senior experience will beat any first-time starter.

the less Tubbs meddles on the sidelines, the better...he needs to just continue shutting up & let Al Borges run things on offense. If we beat South Carolina, we go 9-3 (including bowl game)...if not, 8-4 or maybe 7-5...

I went to the Tennessee orange and white game yesterday to get a feel for this years team. Unfortunately, since half their players are in jail, I really couldn't tell how good the team was. Ainge was average, but I still think he'll get the job. My main concern was the backup kicker, if their starter gets injured, the Vols are fucked. The offensive line is the Vols biggest concern, if its good, a national title is not out of the question.
Oh and about Spurriers remarks, they will be irrelevant when the vols rape the cocks on October 29.
If anything, this is a do or die year for Rutgers. The New Hampshire loss, combined with the disappointing 4-win season, have taken a hit on offseason recruiting. A winning season must occur this year to have any hope for the near future. Have not followed the team much this spring, but will be going to the spring game next week. I just hope Hart will throw less INTs, and the O-Line and Secondary be much better then they were last year.

It's like that for every team. Hell, for many teams, their first kicker is that bad. They don't get hurt very much, so it's not a problem.

also everyone needs to give spurrier a couple of seasons to get the talent he needs. once he gets that the gamecocks will compete for a sec title and be a major player in the national picture. the guy knows how to get it done in college, will be no different at usc.

I think Purdue's going to be solid. We've got most of our defense back and I'm excited about Kirsch and our receiving group. It'll be interesting to see the changes in the offense. But it all comes down to if we can show up in the big games, which we've had trouble doing in past years.
But I expect us to finish 3rd or 4th in the Big Ten. Michigan, Ohio St, and Iowa are all going to be tough. I also see Penn St improving over the mediocrity they've shown in the past years.
Spartan
06-09-2005, 06:04 PM
Yeah, but i don't think it'll be drastic...as in they won't contend for the big ten. They got major problems, as any program would who only has 3 conference wins in the past 2 years - 2 of the 3 against Indiana.
As for the top of the Big Ten, gotta factor in Michigan State as well. Might not win it, but they'll be there.

oh yeah I didn't mean a Big Ten title. I see them possibly getting over 500 and getting in the bowl bid mix.
Also you raise a good point about MSU. I still think they'll finish middle of the pack because they have question marks on both sides of the ball especially defense.
And I don't know how I skipped over this yesterday, but Purdue doesn't have to play Ohio St or Michigan this year. So that means the only really big game is home against Iowa. That could be huge at the end of the year.
Well in the big 10 I can't see anyone other then Michigan, Ohio State or Iowa winning the big 10 Penn State has no offence. Purdue wont win the Big 10 because Orton and Stubblefield have graduated and Michigan State is not good enough to win or finish in the top 5. I can see Illinois being a surprise under Zook and finishing ahead of Inidana, Northwestern and with a bit of luck Michigan State.

Well I said Illinois could finish ahead of Indiana and Northwestren because they have a better running back then Northwestren in Halsey a better coach in Zook and a better offensive line then Northwestren.

Penn State might make a run in the conference, but only because they have a pretty favorable schedule, with some of their key games at home. Also, some of their so-called touted recruits are supposed to see alot of action this year. If Paterno can't at least pull out an 8-3 this season, he needs to just pack it up & call it a career...

looking at va tech and the number of returning players, especially on offense. they got a shot of running the table, again if vick doesnt disappoint.
this year texas will beat oklahoma.
meh.
Louisville will win the Big East this year my dark horse BCS bowl pick is UTEP or Toledo. Why UTEP or Toledo you might ask 1.The team that may be the BCS dark horse will have to win every game for example Frenzo State plays USC and Boise State plays Georgia. Second they will have to win their confrence Frenzo State and Boise State will slug it out and lose at least two games each this year and one of them be in confrence play. Third and final point is that C-USA and the MAC have confrence championship games that are on nationwide TV and that could sway BCS voters.

fresno is more loaded with talent than any other pat hill team. and pat hill does a lot with HALF of this talent, WAC scouts are saying. People say the winner of the Boise-Fresno game will win the conference (which is true), but that game won't even be close. Fresno will blowout their schedule. And has a great shot at USC.

with the way croom cleaned house preseason last year after taking the job, I didn't think it would take too long. he chased off 17(!) scholarship players who he felt was deadweight.
truth be told, the west simply isn't that competitive this year. miss. state can get wins out of arkansas and ole miss. when they actually have a good team (going back before 2001, where this slide began), they play alabama like they were auburn or something. though I can't possibly believe alabama's beat them this season. but it is at home...they also get georgia at home and get a win at kentucky. trip to the swamp is all but a loss.
but the ooc is definitely working for them. murray state and weakened tulane and houston are just about 3 guaranteed wins. I say they'll get to 6 wins this season.
Still got a hoss running game. norwood may just be the 2nd-3rd best back in the south. defense ain't terrible, and they aren't losing many from last year. but installing a west coast offense takes time, and this is volume two. omarr connor will be a much better passer this season.

Colorado may be set to have a good season, and they are at home, so I'm not particularly enthusiastic about CSU's chance of winning, but I can't wait for the season to start for one of my teams.
Interested in seeing Rutgers-Illinois on Saturday just to see what this Rice freshman can do in the backfield for the Knights. I remember reading some ESPN insider blog saying positive things about him, so hopefully he can finally fill the lingering hole at tailback and also take pressure off of Leonard.

they do have the longest losing streak (current) in I-A...at 16. Or 17 now that they lost. But UCF held their ground after the first 2 USC drives (14 points). I think it was a good game for O'Leary and the Knights...they can easily win a few games this year here in c-usa action.
plus, it isn't 117 anymore. it's 119. welcome florida intl. and florida atlantic. FAU of course being from the MEAC and a traditional black school, intl. coached by former hurricane coach howard schellonglastname.

Actually, Florida A&M was the historicaly black college that was supposed to go up to 1-A this year, but decided to stay in the MEAC. FAU and FIU are both recent startups, and Schellenberger coaches FAU, not FIU.
That said, I'm interested in seeing what the FAU Owls can do this year, after upsetting Hawaii on the road last year.

apparently AU lost their OC as well. What'd they throw, close to 50 passes? Are you freaking kidding me?! It's not like the running game wasn't working...hell, that one guy Stewart seemed like he injured anyone who tried bringing him down. I think AU handed the ball off a whopping total of 19 times...that might be understandable if they were behind 28-0, but the game was always within reach...wtf?? With an offensive gameplan like that, they deserved to lose. And don't get me started on the ACC crew working that game... Uggggh, I need a drink...

yeah auburn deserved to lose. ga. tech's defense was well designed. I am tired of the tiger faithful blaming the loss on the starting of a new qb. that is bullshit, you lose as a team. running game wasn't exactly dominant. defense didn't make third down stops. bullshit, pure bullshit. ga tech was the better team, plain and simple.
notre dame looked like a whole new team. still think willingham would have turned the program around. anyhow a win is a win. offense looked more structured.
va tech made me all smiles. it was close, but it was a road win in conference. those are almost always dog fights. vick settled down in the second half. he doesn't have the urge to run as much as his brother. that is good and bad. he took some big hits in the pocket. however his td throw while rolling to his left was pretty damn impressive. humes/imoh running game will allow these guys to run games out in the 4th qrtr.

I'm not blaming Auburn's QB...hell, Brandon Cox showed alot of composure, considering someone was in his face nearly every down. But asking him to throw 44 times in his debut is asinine. Jason Campbell wasn't asked to do that...ever. Nor Daymeune Craig, Patrick Nix, Stan White, etc. AU only handed the ball off 19 times all game. 19 times!! No wonder GT was sending the heat every down. Like I said in another post, I can understand only calling 19 running plays if you're trailing 28-0 or something, but AU was in striking distance all game. If you're gonna throw 44 pass plays, at least throw a bunch of screens & draws to slow down the rush...even Corso knows this LOL
This trend, I'm afraid, dates back to Tuberville's '03 & beyond teams...then, whenever AU fell behind by ANY margin, the offense would operate with too much desperation & urgency, as if they were down by 17 with only 8 minutes left to play. It wasn't a problem last season 'cuz they had the horses to take & keep the lead, but long story short: if AU's gameplan continues resembling anything like it did against GT, it's gonna be an 8-4 season IF they're lucky... and luck definitely was NOT on their side this past Sat...

For my next Saturday analysis, Fulmer better not depend on the dinker if he wants to beat the Florida. Ainge is the only one who can beat them. Dink balls aren't going to win it. I beleive Fulmer will do this and the Vols will win easily. My main reason is Florida struggled to run the ball on Wyoming's pitiful line. If they can't run it on Wyoming, they sure as hell aren't going to run it on Mahellona and company. this will make Florida's offense one dimensional,i.e. Mr Leak will be doing that in his pants with Urban Myth's option shit.

Temple was a horrible school, usually when a major conference has a team as bad as that in football, there is a reason. For example Duke which is one of the worst big conference teams has great basketball. Temple was only in the league in one sport and did not really add anything. They were kicked out so that UConn could be in the league, this was pre-ACC raid. Teaming switching to the ACC changed their plans, but they didn't want Temple because if anything, it would actually hurt the league, not help it.

snakebit man. no reason why they shouldn't be 3-0. totally outclassed Southern Methodist (as their talent should have) but could not do anything in the red zone.

I love how ESPN is slobbering over the fact that thier messiah Urban Meyer has never lost a conferance opener. He coached in the WAC, his non-conferance games were harder than that pitiful conferance. This is big boy football.
Chris Leak is not the one to run that offense. He's soft and won't be able to take the hits that the option offense entails. That's why I like Tennessee.
The 6 point spread is a steal. Bet your money, you'll go home happy.

the wac is not on par with the sec, but its not a weak conference by any stretch of the imagination. I am as biased as they come, but geesh. leak is a dynamic offensive player, he can fit in pretty much any type of offense. just my opinion though.

Kyle Wright needs to get protection and the running backs need to pick up the blitz, I expect Miami to pick up there play in the second half. Good run by Hester just now, we cant make stupid mistakes, if we dont we should get some points.
k good a field goal at least thats progress. Defense needs to get a turnover.
wow!!! what a fuckin hit!
that was fuckin shit! damn it!
ok we need to start off the third quarter strong. I would like to see us go long.
what the fuck is wrong with the o line. When Dorsey was there he got sacked like 6 times in his career!
we need a touchdown here, i will be happy wiht three though as long as we dont fuck up with a miss, block or turnover

hah, that arkansas game was fucking hilarious.
i don't know if bama is better than i thought or if usc's defense is just awful. i think it's a combination of both. that defense didn't even know how to tackle. did you see brown's touchdown? he "broke" three tackles, but in all honesty, no gamecock even tried to wrap him up. they just ran into him with their arms at their sides and apparently expected him to fall down.

I watched the first half but fell asleep at halftime because i have strep throat or some shit, but the highlights were comically bad. Florida blocked a punt at the 2 yard line. The punter decided he wanted to fake a punt later on in the game and threw a pitiful floater, again giving Florida excellent field position, These bonehead plays pretty much gave florida thier second half points.

first off a day after having the best fan experience of my life, I am a bit sore from the sun. however having seen games in the acc,big east, and even big 10...I can say without a doubt none of them had the excitement of a mid-level game in the sec.
first off the crowd was incredible, had to be at least 12,000 bama fans in attendance. the opening was incredible. the usc alumni toast, followed by the introduction of "cocky" to the audience. the game was pretty bad. croyle looked incredible cole. all his passes except for 2 were perfect. bama receivers dropped lots of passes. when he ran with the ball he made the gamecocks defense look even more pathetic.
however shula should have ran the ball even more. it worked all day, so why not keep at it. no one on the sc team actually impressed me, except for that canadian tight end. he was as good a blocker as I have seen. even caught the only pass tossed his way. the gamecock fans are so loyal. listening in the call in shows on the ride home. the optomism is incredible.
spurrier will get it turned around, so people better take their shots now. give the guy two years and he will field a team competing for a sec title. also seeing all those chesty southers girls wearing shirts with I Love Cocky...or hats with the word "COCKS" made me smile all day. I rooted for bama, but as the game went on my hatred for them emerged and I got into the name calling with the sc fans.
tailgating was a blast. soon to be brother-in-law has season tickets. actually has 4 for each home game. his wife since having the kid doesnt like sitting in the heat, so I will attend all of them this season. awwww yeah.
