There are a lot of intelligent and funny people out there who listen to Coldplay, or Controller Controller, or Arctic Monkeys...y'know whatever is popular at the moment. I don't see how anyone is "dumber" for listening to mainstream music. There's a reason it's called mainstream music, because most of the general public out there, which consitutes 70-80% of the population, who listen to it. Can not agree more. I can not judge a person on their musical tastes either. I just think these people don't feel patronized by their music because they just have no clue that there is honest real music out there not being shoved down their throats. They are just ready to listen to what's hot. (And sadly, what's hot right now seems to be bastardized versions of bands I enjoy, like Television...) Although, I'm sorry to say to you, DNS, that Franz Ferdinand feels like that to me. So, I guess opinions of what is forced and what is not is different to even those "in the know."..

Green_Peaness
06-17-2006, 11:09 AM
Pop music itself is dumbed down? Then why do Weezer songs sound more simplistic than any R&B song you hear on the radio? Maybe you just mean lyrics; in that case you're probably right, but I don't listen to them anyway.

And why is it that people are so bothered by pop music earning companies money and all that, but not when it applies to movies? Why aren't you guys watching only Indie films? Movies are dumbed down too...we do feel stupid for having seen a patronizing movie, but we don't ridicule people who liked it to nearly the same extent (...except for Dukes of Hazzard or something).

And I couldn't care less if a band is "honest". My favorite bands of the past (Led Zeppelin and Earth Wind & Fire) are not bands I'd call honest. The former often copied riffs from old blues songs, the latter had lame lyrics about stars and stuff that probably didn't come from the heart. They're still respected by most people, maybe because they sound great, which is all that matters to me when it comes to music

Dead Nigga Storage
06-17-2006, 11:23 AM
weezer is pretty damn mainstream, so that was a horrid example. when i say dumbed down, i mean that, not only are the lyrics ridiculously shallow and trite, but the riffs and structure from a set of songs in a specific genre has very little difference from one track to the next, or from one group to the next. any number of mainstram pop-rock acts are VERY difficult to seperate from one another because they all come from this same direct influence (the nickleback, creed, etc. types for example, absolutely molest acts like pearl jam), and adhere to this sound that is so very much the same across the board, that i find it almost impossible to believe that someone could listen to so many of those bands and not have issues with the lack of diversity. and put simply, i HATE when people say they don't care about the lyrics or don't at least listen to them. the lyrics are always more what the song is about than the mood set by the sound behind it. i could strum along to the most upbeat acoustic melody in the world, but be talking about painting the walls with my brains, and it renders the melody pretty much meaningless. of course, the backround melody (or lack thereof) is capable of playing just as important of a role in setting mood, but i can't stand when people just say that they don't listen to lyrics as if they really serve no purpose.

and if you want to say that people don't talk about indie movies (or at least less popular movies) on here, then you've never visited a movie thread at all. it just seems that on this board, people with mainstream music taste are much more defensive. half of the movie threads created are about directors like PTA. and for the love of god, don't tell me that people don't ridicule others for their movie taste on this board or make fun of dumbed down movies. how many fucking threads have we had alread about "THIS MOVIE IS THE SIGN OF THE APOCOLYPSE". and how many of the "indie music nerds" on this board are ever seen discussing the latest adam sandler or vin diesel flick? mainstream movies get just as much shit as mainstream music around here.

the entire blink-182 catalog. if that wasn't written for radio, i don't know what is. i think franz ferdinand has pretty much made it clear from day one that their music is simply meant to be rock people can dance to, and they've never tried for anything more. pretty much every single song they have written, "do you want to" included, has overly simplistic lyrics that mean nothing close to what its assumed they mean. "do you want to" was a joke song that was just a collection of phrases and out-of-context sayings that the lead singer heard at a party and jotted down. beats the hell out of:

don't be stupid. as long as a band doesn't change their sound for the sole reason of selling more albums (i'm looking at you, liz phair) then there's nothing wrong with signing with a big bad major label. when you worry about popularity or record labels more than music, then you're just as bad as people who dismiss everything they've never heard of.

i was mainly referring to modest mouse, as those other two were never really "indie" or anywhere near it. U2 and metallica's music may have changed over the years, but U2 was massively popular almost from the start, and metallica...i don't know. i have no problem with bands writing songs for commercials, either. i do take issue with bands liscening already classic songs to commercials, though, as it's a little cheesy, but i still wouldn't really hold it against them.

do you want to" was a joke song that was just a collection of phrases and out-of-context sayings that the lead singer heard at a party and jotted down. beats the hell out of:

I'm not talking about the lyrics, the sound and tone of the song is very poppy. It's still in the vain of dance-rock but way less rock than the other songs on the album. When I first heard it, I thought they were trying to have a British radio hit. It reminded me of Blur's Boys And Girls. I'm not saying it's the same song, it just has a lot in common.

I know fully that blink wrote All The Small Things for radio(and more than likely Feeling This). Tom Delonge said he wanted it to be the biggest song in the world because he wrote it for his GF and future wife. So he dumbed down the song to be very pop and wrote a lot of nananananas.

I don't see it as a bad thing, as long as the band has the goods to back it up. Franz Ferdinand is a great band, but they probably get label pressure to be sucessful, so they try to make one or two songs more hooky and easier to digest for radio. Similar to what Blink 182 does. But you can't deny that Blink aren't earnest with their sound and lyrics. They've been writing about the same things since they were on small labels and only really made a huge change in sound on their last album (even when their label wanted them to churn another pop-punk record) which was very well recieved with critics.

But you can't deny that Blink aren't earnest with their sound and lyrics. They've been writing about the same things since they were on small labelsso, basically that just means they've been striving to be a a big radio-hit band without any soul or originality since they first penned a song?and only really made a huge change in sound on their last album (even when their label wanted them to churn another pop-punk record) which was very well recieved with critics.amazing that that "change in sound" just so happened to be to a sound that was so amazingly popular in the mainstream at the time, too. you can knock them for anything else, but FF at least doesn't sound like every single other popular band from its day.

...and this thread just wouldn't be complete without an argument about prince, thank you MJ. but i don't think i was ever arguing over either band's lyrics being "dumber", i was saying it was retarded to pull out one random song by FF that was SUPPOSED to be dumb and say it was bad. whereas, i could have picked 90% of the songs blink wrote and they STILL would have had similarly trite lyrics.
