It could go either way.

No way is it going to be as good as the original, but it still might be funny in its own right. I know Steve Carell is really funny, and I've heard that it's really not all that bad.

The risk is about whether or not they will stay true to the spirit of the original show.

Any thoughts?

They showed the second episode on My Space earlier today...........I watched it and thought it was very funny (although it's definitely darker/more offensive than the British version)......but the brilliant writing and great performances were all there......

the first episode is essentially a line-for-line reading of season one, episode one. its what many of us have already seen, and it is horrible.

but apparently, future episodes take their cues from the original eps, but not the scripts themselves... and so there's a good deal more variance to come. so i'll hold my nose early, and hope that i'm surprised as it rolls along.

but pocketfox... claiming that carrell had anything to do with those early shows... i mean, no one knew who the hell he was, then. even the daily show constituency diehards wouldn't have pinned those shows' hopes on him. i doubt they're even on his radar anymore, let alone his resume.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but I wish they would've gone with different character types (except for the David Brent role) 'cuz now they're gonna have BIG shoes to fill. I mean, I'm gonna have a hard time buying into the "Tim & Dawn" subplot since I already know the eventual outcome. At least with new, fresh characters, I wouldn't have to worry about seeing ghosts of Tim, Dawn, Gareth, Keith, etc. But I'm glad that they're at least writing new scripts...

I never did, just saying that it would suck for a man as funny as him to have 3 failed shows for the same network, especially since he was the only good thing about the first two (especially, ellie, Papa was a little better).

Also, it should be pointed out that there's hope for the show because Greg Daniels is connected to it. He pegged Texas with KotH, he should be able to peg the office environment with this.

Myspace is showing a condensed version of the second episode, "Diversity Day".........it's supposedly a thirteen minute clip, so about an act shorter than the full episode that aired on Wednesday........but yeah, folks, having seen the full episode, there is no need to worry about this show.........yes, it's not the British version, but it's damn funny in its own right.

It's going to be an ugly transition. Why ruin the reputation of a classic? they'll copy the same mannerisms and gervais-speak that he meshed together so brilliantly, but it's not going to be the same, hearing Yankee voices portrayed with The Office.

On a side note, Office Space was a very funny movie.

I'm waiting for the second episode to judge. The guy playing Tim's role (Jim?) kinda blows compared to the real Tim. Same with Gareth. This Gareth is just... weird. Not funny. He's making me uncomfortable.

Steve Carell is still hilarious though. I mean honestly hilarious. 'Sensitivity Training' or whatever the second ep is called should be great though.

On one hand, the British accents make the Brit Office classier, but the American accents are easier to understand for me, plus the references will be local. No more wondering what 'Eastenders' is.

My grade for the pilot= B

I liked the "Gareth" character...I thought he made a pretty good suck-up.

I think the US version will be good in its own right, but it'll take a miracle to outdo or match the nearly flawless BBC version.

Occasionally, it seemed like the NBC version was a heartbeat away from resembling any other sitcom...IMO it just didn't capture the bleakness of the BBC version. Plus, it didn't feel much like a "mockumentary", and the "camera awareness" seemed almost non-existant.

That being said, I anticipate the new storylines, and tonight's episode was still worthy of a B/B- grade...

Shockingly for a alternative, laughtrack free comedy show, The Office WON its timeslot on Thursday with 11.2 Million Viewers, capturing 97% of The Apprentice's 11.8 Million.

Of course, going against House and The Amber and Rob Show will be a tad tougher on Tuesday, but if it beats it's Scrubs lead-in on Tuesday, give it a 2nd season.

By the Way, C/C- for the pilot, A/A- for Diversity Day.

yeah, I watched it again and I noticed a little more camera awareness...I dunno, there was something that took away from the docu-feel IMO. Maybe it was the pacing (NBC's 21-22 minute vs. BBC's 29-30 minute pilot episodes), maybe they were too comfortable in front of the camera...whatever it was, it occasionally gave it a sitcom-y vibe.

I thought it was interesting as far as British-to-American-adaption-comedies go. I was actually surprised (I haven't been following this show at all) to see Greg Daniel's name in the credits. That made me want to see this idea succeed. I haven't viewed the original version yet, so I can't rightfully give the pilot a basis grade.

The pilot was what I expected, pale compared the original (the worst example of this was the "firing" of Pam, which fell flat), but I can imagine liking it a lot more if I hadn't seen the Gervais version. And the next one looks promising, so I'm sticking with it

I showed 'Episode 1' to my dad on DVD on monday, and then we watched the 'Pilot' on Thursday. He didn't laugh much at either, but he does like Steve Carell, and thought some stuff was funny in the Pilot.

He also enjoyed 'Episode 1,' but didn't laugh because it's really hard to make him laugh. I know this probably doesn't matter... at all, but I thought it was cool to get someone's opinion that only saw the pilot for both series.

I just watched the "Diversity Day" episode on myspace. It's still not quite there, but a much better episode than the pilot.
The side characters are still a bit one dimensional. It seems all of them except Gareth (or whatever they call him in this one) are playing either "bored guy" or "deer in headlights". But i liked Steve showing more of Brent characteristic this time, by subjecting the whole office to his homemade diversity seminor to spite the company and mask his own ignorance.

And I didn't like the Pilot episode too much. I've never seen the original Office, although I've heard it was brilliant. But this episode just seemed very slow and awkward. There were some funny moments, I liked the part where Jim was talking to Pams fiance (I think those are their names, cant quite remember.) And the part where Michael "X'ed" Pam. But there werent any laugh out loud moments. The episode above is a lot better than the pilot, so I'll still be checking out this show.

I disagree. He's stated in various interviews that he couldn't possibly live up to the David Brent character and is trying to make Michael Scott more of his own thing.......I find the character to be far, far different from the first show's boss....he's more smarmy, less of a humorist, etc...

Hydro
03-30-2005, 07:25 PM
I have to say, the second episode of the Yankified Office managed to keep me laughing for almost the entire episode -- the whole thing fell apart at the end, badly, when Michael, enacting his own "diversity training" after finding the corporate-approved speaker unsatisfying, crassly imitated an Indian convenience store clerk to the face of a South Asian employee in a way that was far more confrontational than David Brent would ever dare to be. This elicited the predictable face-slap and storming-out that feels just as scripted when compared to the employees' meek acceptance of David's torments in the original Office as the overt insults that provoked it would seem out of place coming from David Brent.

The rest of the show, however, was really good, from Michael/David's well-meaning but racist idea of a tolerance exercise (which involved taping a card with an ethnicity on it to each employee's forehead and encouraging them to speak to each other as if they were of that race -- Michael/David explained to the interviewers that he deliberately left out "Arab" because "I thought that would be too explosive... no pun intended") to the Keith character's own bloodless adaption of the Chris Rock "black people vs. niggers" routine (Michael's more "faithful" interpretation was what brought the diversity speaker to the office in the first place). If it can hold like this for the rest of its run, leaving behind the disaster that was the pilot, this whole thing might end up ranking as the first adaptation of a British show in more than 30 years to have actually been worthwhile in and of itself. Grade for episode 2: B+

finally got round to watching both episodes last night.

the pilot was definitely copying off the uk's first episode but i suppose it worked out. wasn't a real fan of it but i think they do have the right characters.

second episode was great in my opinion. still doesnt compare upto the class of the uk version but i was laughing all the way through. and although i laughed when he imitated the indian person it did seem a little over the top and along with the slap it didnt really fit too well.

Pam is slightly different to Dawn but her character is great. she gets used as a sort of scapegoat and treated slightly worse in general to what dawn did but it works for me.

much awaiting next week's episode.

Samuel L Bronkowitz
04-03-2005, 07:01 AM
still sitcom-ish at times, but overall I enjoyed it alot. I agree that the "Michael getting slapped" scene was a bit forced...mighta been more believable if he was slapped right away instead of letting it drag out like that. I also thought the "Hero" discussion treaded water with the "setup, punchline, reheat & serve"-style of a typical sitcom. And I also thought Tim's demeanor wasn't too realistic at the episode's conclusion...sorry, I don't care how lovesick you are, but if you just earlier in the day lost 25% of your entire yearly commission, you're not gonna let it go just 'cuz some chick put her head on your shoulder.

But my buddy & I laughed often. There's plenty to choose from, but the line that stuck out most for me were:

"This is not a joke. This is offensive. And lame...so that's double offensive. This is an environment of welcoming...and you should just get the hell out of here."

Another solid episode. Still kinda sitcom-ish at times, but I guess the pacing of network TV makes it inevitable for that to happen.

I doubt it got cancelled...yet. The other day I read that NBC acknowledged it might take awhile for The Office to find its audience, so hopefully that means they won't pull the trigger on it.

someone who knows more about this, please answer: didn't BBC3 buy the rights to air the NBC Office episodes? If so, how lucrative of a deal was it? If it was a big enough agreement, maybe NBC will let the show run longer than usual, since they'd have another network to fall back on...

Steve Carell's got both commercial & critical success from The 40-Year Old Virgin, so I hope to hell that helps the ratings of The Office. I heard him promoting the show during an interview on syndicated radio this morning, so he's trying his damnest to get the word out....

Samuel L Bronkowitz
10-05-2005, 06:50 PM
last night's episode was great, from Dwight's Mozart/Butch Cassidy analogy all the way to Michael's description of his condo to Jim ("...3 bedrooms...gay-friendly community..."). As much as I laughed throughout Michael's whole condo ordeal ("these ceilings weren't this low before!"..."Offer revoked!!", etc...), I actually felt a little sorry for the guy. But not for long. The "Office Olympics" were OK enough, and Angela really needs to consider buying a vibrator or something...

8.5/10

VMike311
10-05-2005, 07:35 PM
yeah, office olympics were not that good. But it was fine and fit into the ending nicely. I felt sorry for the guy too, but I love how he tired to rent out a room to Dwight. funny stuff.

Yesterday’s episode was disappointing. Dwight’s jealousy was funny at first, but got more annoying towards the end. And we get it already, Jim and Pam like each other. 4/10

Samuel L Bronkowitz
10-12-2005, 03:19 PM
I disagree. My friends & were laughing our asses off last night. The episode started off a little slow, and maybe a little too silly for its own good...but once it got going, it never let up. I thought Dwight trying to cheat the rules of a harmless "desert island" game was, well, classic Dwight. Pam's fiancee picking Angela in the "who would you do" game was a great moment. Michael's "10 Rules"---well, actually just 3---rated high on his bullshit-o-meter as well.

It's also a plus seeing an occasional "human" side from Michael again this week, 'cuz it makes rooting for him a little easier...

I'd give it a 4/5, and I woulda rated it higher if it wasn't for a few wincing moments early on...

Nah, it had pretty much the same running time as the other episodes. Did you watch 'til the very end? this week's episode was pretty good, with everyone not telling Michael about the party & all. And I'm curious how the Angela/Dwight plot device will work out. For some time, I've thought using the always uptight Angela in that way would make a great storyline....however, I wasn't expecting the other person to be Dwight (I figured it'd be some new employee who'd get fired after an episode or two). I hope that doesn't mean Angela is on the way out, 'cuz I thought her character was funny...

the deleted scenes are great, and in some cases help make more sense of the storyline. For example: in "Diversity Day", you probably noticed Ryan didn't participate in the meeting....in one of the deleted scenes, you find out he was at the meeting at first, but he got kicked out by Michael for upstaging him (in Michael's mind, anyway). Necessary viewing for any fan, and the great thing is that there's probably almost another two episodes' worth of footage....

for real? i think it's a pain in the ass myself. besides that, the severance package set is awesome. finally caught up on the episodes i hadn't seen yet.

i haven't seen any of these jim/pam ads... but i'm personally enjoying this subplot; just as long as this season doesn't center mainly around it.

Best Deleted scene so far is from the "Booze Cruise" when Creed talks about being in the Grass Roots :D

It's just a slightly more interesting way to package them. And I like how they used the extra space on the inside to print all the episode descriptions. That's better than a lot of sets that have those irritating little books that always fall out when you open the package.

I hated this. As much as I love Pam and Jim, it was totally cheesy and didn't promote the show like it is--which is an ensemble comedy.

I saw a few of those last night during My Name Is Earl and the repeat of Casino Night. They're pretty bad.

Exactly, it's a comedy, how about something, I don't know? FUNNY?

overlapping disc sets are so lame.

why cant people learn and just do the mini cover sets, like futurama/family guy/ AD Seasons 1 & 2 i know its a bit more expensive but a lot better, i always feel like img onna scratch it my discs while taking them out in my office s2/lost s2 sets.

i dont know if theres been another show with such great deleted scenes.

Kamerica

actually, i dont think the mini cover sets are any more expensive. if anything, they're cheaper.

but i agree, i loathe the overlapping discs.

09-17-2006, 01:17 PM
if it was cheaper im sure nearly every tv on dvd would do them but only about 30-40% do the mini cases

I'm pretty sure the promos are supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, and least that's how I took them. Overlapping discs kind of bug, but they are way better than shoving two discs in one DVD case (each disc on each side), or using the damn "double-DVD" flipping thingies. I don't mind the seperators for a movie-DVD, but for a TV show, either give me seperate cases, Simpsons-style folding, or overlap.

I really liked the look of the Severence package, but as I already had Season 1 (and I got Season 2 early as it was), I wasn't going to shell out for the magnet. My Dwight Bobblehead and I are psyched about Thursday's premiere.

conor.
09-19-2006, 12:38 PM
if a tv show contains more than 3 discs then they should package them CSI style. those cases are very easy to use, and make great use of space

i don't know if i buy that the promo was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, especially since it isn't the show producers who make those things. just seems like the network is trying to reel in the friends crowd.

i love how the actor who plays Creed is just playing a parody of himself...

As for the Jim/Pam subplot, it really is one of the few romance plots on tv I actually give a damn about because it has been so subtle and not played out or cliche. I enjoyed the Jim plot in Booze Cruise a lot because he was so emotionally destroyed during it. However, the show is for laughs and i'm sure it will provide it.

I can't wait for Ed Helms to start his 10 episode stint.

Overlapping discs blow. Too annoying.

I'm such a sucker for Jim and Pam it's ridiculous. I didn't notice until Pat and I watched Casino Night last night that Jim had a tear rolling down his face when he told Pam he was in love with here. Thursday night cannot come soon enough. If they disappoint me, heads will roll.

Me and Bobblhead Dwight are PUMPED. I agree with wanting more commentary tracks - the tracks that are included are all great, it just makes me wish there were more (although 10 is a great number, honestly). The Injury is my favorite episode, hands down, and I would have loved hearing the background on that. Who knows, maybe The Office will go all Scrubs on us and release commentaries on the net to supplement the DVDs and/or first-run episodes.

Oh, did anyone read the New York Times article (and all the spoilerishness it implied) and the ensuing net-controversey that is now going on because of it?

I just hope they don't blow their wad prematurely with the Jim/Pam storyline & screw up the dynamic of the show....on the other hand, maybe there's no plans to go beyond a 3rd or 4th season?

"gaydar? oh yeah i think sharper image has that"

great overall episode, it went very smoothly, and didnt weigh too much into the jim/pam shit.

also the pam/artist story line is virtually none to the general audience, because a lot of the art story was in the deleted scenes of season 2, and as far as i can remember nonexistant in season 1. pam did say she was taking art classes now that she broke it off with roy, so apparently they're going back to that story line. with dawn in the uk series i remember it being brought up rather often. guess they are just trying to stretch it out.

Jan brought up that graphic design course for Pam and Jim supported it while Roy mocked it. (boys and girls I believe)

And bloody hell, I'm not sure I can handle another season of being sexually frustrated by Jim and Pam.

In the US pilot, she mentioned she wanted to do children's illustrations (just like Dawn) and in Boys and Girls, Jan wanted her to take a fellowship in New York -- so they have focused on it, the deleted scenes were just more in-depth.

I thought it was a great episode -- but I want Jim back in Scranton -- STAT.

So many good lines though -- great episode.

I was laughing, but I felt it was too much in one episode. Greg Daniels explained on his blog that the docu crew supposedly recieved extra money from their bosses to follow Jim to Stamford because they felt it was important, so neat backstory there.

I did like the chick from Stamford making a meta, and Ed Helms is great, portraying a cross between Dwight and Michael with a dash of a dark, creepy side...notice the pilot callbacks, from the nail clippers to the jello...Jim's headshake to the camera was hysterical.

Besides that, great lines, especially from Creed and Michael's "There's Gil, Oscar's roommate. Wonder if he knows." Dwight thinking about Angela with another woman was hilarious...

...but I don't know. Was there a new director? Because there sure as hell were a lot of new camera angles, as well as some new lighting that made the show feel different and at times like the drama shows. Pressure from the network, perhaps?

Nice resolution to Jim/Pam/Roy. The fact that the actor who plays Roy lost weight and grew a bread over the summer reminded me of the dedication the cast gives to the show. Steve Carell also looked a bit different, and he also didn't seem as into it as he was in S2, maybe that's because he was playing the complete opposite of that character in "Evan Almighty" (what he was filming right before doing more eps), so hopefully he'll be more like Michael in episode two.

BTW: Did anyone think Arrested Development when it came to Roy's DUI mugshot? Seemed very in the style of AD; I almost expected Ron Howard to start narrating.

BTW #2: One last comment: "Queer as Fuck". I don't care how annoying it will get, I am using that at least twenty times tomorrow...

Ed Helms looks so different without his glasses on. I almost didn't realize it was him at first. Then i remember he was suppose to be on the show and was like "hey that's ed helms!"

The same thing happened on that arrested development episode where he played that real estate guy that lindsay thought was hitting on her. The first time I saw that episode, I didn't even know it was him.

I loved last night's episode. The fact that Micheal made up with Dwight, gave him a hug, watched movies with him, and THEN still made him stand on a box with "liar" taped to him. Great stuff.
I also loved how angry Jim's new boss (Josh) was about Jim's terrible computer game skills. Funniest line of the night for some reason: "Crentist". I was dying after that.
-"Your dentist's name is Crentist? That sounds a lot like dentist."
-"Maybe that's why he became a dentist."

I'd like to add: On Jenna Fischer's (sp?) Myspace account, she said that Steve Carell was adlibbing when he kissed Oscar in the season premiere. He was only supposed to hug him, but then he kept going. I don't know if it's true, but she said that everyone's reactions were genuine, because they weren't expecting him to kiss Oscar! I love finding little tidbits like that...that's why audio commentaries are amazing. The Office commentaries are incredibly amusing, because you discover how much of the show is improvised, which is quite impressive. Also, everyone's hilarious, and they keep me laughing almost as much as the show itself.

There's my two cents...I guess

Got home from vacation and had to say the newest episode was hilarious. "Call of Duty"? Wow, and I thought Stamford was actually good. It was nice to see Michael emulate a sort-of Mr. Burns boss image with dealing with Dwight. Hard to say if he was being too harsh, since it is standard that a boss would fire you if he/she ever found out you went out of your way to try and get him/her fired and take their job...but, then again, Michael made Dwight stand on his desk with a sheet of paper labeling him a "LIAR"...so...it's your call...

EDIT: Nevermind. It was an error...
