The best episode for a newbie to watch, in my opinion, is "The Label Maker". It's the quintessential Seinfeld episode, with good shticky Kramer and Newman, the best "Hello, Newman" ever, overlapping plots, catch phrases regifting and degifting, not to mention it's just a great well-paced episode. It all feels very Seinfeldy.

I'm sick of hearing how great this show is so I guess the only thing I can do is watch it and see what all the fuss is about. Someone recommend me one or two episodes."The Contest" and "The Outing". They are both from Season 4, so if you were intending to buy the dvd's then I'd buy Season 4 first. It's the first really great season (probably the best season ever actually.) Believe me, "Seinfeld" is greater than any of the shows that you listed in your top ten TV shows list recently.

01-07-2006, 07:32 AM
Yeah, season 3's awesome. Everyone's in character by then and the writers know what they're doing. It might even be my favorite season as the other classic seasons are more flawed (season 4 with the pilot arc, season 5 with about three D-range episodes, season 6 not enough really memorable episodes)

The Barber - D+
The Bris is just horrible throughout imo. I hate the moyle character with a passion.
The Stand-in was significantly hurt by the lame little people story and the horrible acting by the little people themselves. The rest of the episode ain't great either. George wanting to keep seeing a woman to spite someone else is a stretch, even for George. It's not very amusing anyway. Elaine's "took it out" stuff is okay, but it felt like it should've been funnier.
The Barber was fun to watch at first, but on repeat viewings I realized the music is holding this episode up. It's an incredibly thin and unsubtle episode. The inside look is revealing...Larry David thought the episode was lacking, hence the music was added to go along with the extra-broad barber characters.

Anyway, this is mostly a classic except for another Micky appearance, and Elaine offering sex to the adoption agent, which may be her most OOC moment ever (and it doesn't help that she was obviously pregnant, lol). This is probably the last episode (and arguably the first since season 7) to not rely on strange situations or characters in addition to having a healthy dose of great dialogue. Just my opinion.

Yeah, they just forgot. Elaine also had a sister, though we never see her family anyway.
There are several instances of writers apparently forgetting what happened in the past. George said he'd never told any girl "I love you" in The Face-Painter, but he said it to a girl in "The Ex Girlfriend" from season 2. In (I think) The Wink episode, Jerry wonders if he'd rather date a blind woman or a deaf woman, but he already dated a deaf woman in "The Lip Reader". I'm sure there's a bunch of others, but those two are very obvious.

Other than the very frustrating and pointless Elaine plot (which was a sign of some horrible season 9 subplots to come), this was a hilarious episode. Great George story and gotta love the Newman interrogation scene.
Newman: Everyone knows parcels are rarely damaged in the mail!
Seinfeld: Define rarely.
Newman (close-up showing beads of sweat): Frequently.
The Fatigues - B
A silly episode that works somehow. I love the dramatic camera angles of Frank getting into his painful memory, even though the audience was oddly silent (maybe it's Simpsony humor). Unfortunately the episode ends on a retarded note with Frank flipping tables over. Also, didn't care for all the mentor stuff (what was the point?) but George and Elaine's stories were very good.

The Checks - C- All four stories are a little lame. Jerry with umbrellas, George and his cult thing, Elaine with the "Desperado" boyfriend...all disposable. The Japanese sleeping in the chest of drawers was amusing, but still very silly.
The Chicken Roaster - B A little overrated, still fun.
The Abstinence - B+ I don't buy anything in this episode, but somehow that doesn't bother me. Except for Elaine's boyfriend who's almost a doctor, yet doesn't know how to help someone in emergency. Stupid.
The Andrea Doria - A Best of season 8...it's just so funny.
The Little Jerry - C George's story is the only one I care for. I think this is the first sign of Kramer becoming too cartoonish and over-the-top.
The Comeback - B- Usually "loud George" is really obnoxious to me, but it's amusing here for some reason. Unfortunately, from here on George is screaming at some point or another in damn near every episode. The rest of the episode is okay.

Well, it's among the most irritating George characterizations for starters. The candy bar lineup is such a dumb idea. Why didn't he just eat them? The worst way George could be written is when he was focused on getting revenge. Other than that, Kramer's plot is also almost painfully dumb. The Jerry / Elaine / Puddy plot is only okay, and it doesn't take much screen time compared to the other plots.
I'm surprised you didn't question my Merv Griffin Show grade...isn't that one almost universally liked?
