View Full Version : Rate/Review: And Maggie Makes Three
Another brilliant flashback episode. The moment when Bart told the story and Homer's head began to inflate was hilarious, and pretty much everything about this episode was priceless. A definite 5/5, becoming yet another one of my favourites.

Another very good flashback episode, which isn't quite as good as its predecessors, BUT is still very entertaining, with a fully-developed plot and some great original gags, notably the Sperm Scene, and Patty and Selma phoning up Aaronson and Zykowski. The ending is nicely done and sappy - the good kind of sappy.

Perfect episode, with the best ending in the show's history, IMO. Everything since Homer realizes that he has to leave his dream job is beyond great.
Strong plot, perfect characterizations, hilarious moments...
5/5. One of my favorites.

But what about the Blunder Years? I know it's not Scully, but it's somewhat a flashback episode and it is horrid.
Anyway... And Maggie makes 3 is perfect, I could watch it again and again and yeah, the ending is the best part. A+

I have to re-watch it but I think it´s a 4/5 . For some reason I´m not the biggest fan of flashback episodes. I think they are all pretty good, but I prefer great "normal" episodes. But I think The Way We Was is a 5/5, because it was the first and the most original one in my opinion, they invented the whole flashback idea with pretty different characterization of the stars of the show, cause they were much younger in that one.
And Maggie Makes Three is a funny and very complete episode and I specially love the Sperm Scene, but I´m not as enthusiastic with the ending. It was O. K. and I have nothing against it, but I think there are better endings anyway.

One of my favorite flashback episodes (of course, I say that about all...er...most of them), for so many reasons. It's funny, it gets the emotion just right, and, like all flashback episodes (well, almost) it has a memorable, touching ending. I really that that Homer's reaction to Maggie's birth was a nice angle for a flashback show, particularly because we got to see the family only two years from the present...and see how their family life changed because of Maggie. Not much more to say, really. An episode that lives up to the reputation of season 6, the series, and flashback episodes in general.

This used to be one of my favorites, but has dropped down a bit.
For what its worth, many elements of this episode are very moving, and the whole episode is basically hilarious. If there's a "problem" with it, its that too much of the story doesn't really utilize the flashback element very well. It turns into a fairly simple "Homer gets a job" story through most of the middle, albeit with little bits here and there about Marge's pregnancy. While that element of the story is highly entertaining in its own right, compared to the truly moving and hilarious previous flashback episodes it feels somewhat empty.
But with that said, this is still a very well done episode. Again, the emptier elements are still well done and hilarious. And while this episode never really reaches the level of any of the previous flashbacks, it has its own sort of brilliance, be it some ingenious and memorable gags, or the truly moving ending. In the trilogy of flashbacks about the birth of the Simpson kids, this one comes out last, but is nonetheless a fitting and quality ending.

This episode was probably an interesting challenge for the writers. It was inevitably going to have to live up to past flashback episodes, but the disadvantage was that all those episodes used cultural flavor and nostalgia to enrich the episode. Obviously, this episode couldn't do so as the events only took place 2 years before. So I think this episode went all-out on emotion to compensate, going for a serious and dry 3rd act, and a really touching ending. I think it worked; the plot really involved and made me sympathetic to Homer, and even more so than the previous 2 childbirth episodes, though not as funny.

An absolute classic imo. One of the best of the best.
Superb plot, characterisation, and very funny. I can't think of a joke that missed and there were lots of good screw the audience gags e.g. Aaronson and Zachowski, "it's windy out there" and just some downright hilarious scenes like Homer leaving the plant, and his plan to attract more business to the ally.
It's a strongly emotional episode too. Obviously the ending is great, but it wouldn't have worked without the right set up. Homer leaves his dream job and thinks he'll be miserable forever, but Maggie makes up for it and I think that works perfectly.
5/5 A+, in my top 10 no doubt, maybe top 5.
Incidentally, this must have one of the best scores of any R and R episode on NHC, over 70% gave it the top mark!

Um, why?
And it appears I never rated this one. It used to be a favorite of mine for the ending, but now I find it slightly out of nowhere, and it lacks the nostalgia of the other flashbacks. It's almost a sort of generic gag episode that just happens to tell the story of how Maggie was born. Definitely not a great episode, but it's still good stuff.

Wow, justintimothy is the ideal subject for the Spanish expression "gustos apaleables" :D.
About And Maggie Makes Three, I will start out with a curiosity. In some other forums I have met guys who really disliked the flashback episodes because they were too much "corny", and they had this one in a relatively high consideration. It seems that this episode looks more acid and realistic for them, and I kinda agree (not in that level, though).
That said, this episode is a solid member in my top10, so I will obviously be quite positive in my review. It is just perfect in every way, though I agree it doesn't have the nostalgia of some previous flashbacks (mostly because it was set two years before the present, so the context is basically the same). Homer is at one of his top-notch characterizations here, and every aspect of him was carried out perfectly. From start to finish, you have an enthusiastic and hopeful guy, who makes clear his love to his family despite being so negligent. He keeps the stupid tone that makes him look like a kid, but in no way his view of the conflict feels out of what should be the usual in his case. His reaction when he notices that Marge is pregnant is absolutely understandable, and I can't do anything but relate to his loss of enthusiasm. The idea of a new, unexpected baby that made the idyllic reality unbalanced is pretty interesting IMO, and the way Homer takes that news made me feel badly for him. In fact, his portrayal is perfect in every way and allows to show him like a real person with real problems without renouncing the nicest Homer-isms. That's why the ending was so moving, maybe a little cheesy, but highlighting what Maggie means to Homer after all in that situation is something that never fails to touch me. "Do it for her" is one of my favorite endings ever.
The second strong point is the humour. Homer being unaware of Marge's pregnancy despite the proofs and then noticing it by an innocent comment from Maude was classic Simpsons comedy. The sperm replica was hilarious. And I could go on and on with this subject: Bart's alternate ending and Homer sorting it out, the "family time", the Knightboat, Homer as an anti-terrorist hero, Homer scooping sand in his underpants, his resignation in the SNPP, etc. The humorous aspect is focused on Homer, and it makes the most of him.
It's not even my favorite flashback (Lisa's First Word is better), but the fact that somebody hates this episode is beyond my comprehension. It has everything to convince everyone. Of course, a huge and solid 10/10.
Always love flashback episodes. 5/5.
Great script and performances.
Ranked number 26 on my top 150.

This was an incredibly touching flashback episode with a perfect ending that manages to put a lump in my throat. The Homer's hair loss joke was hilarious and Homer playing the bongos on Burns' head was also a favourite moment of mine, not to mention Burns' line 'Oh, I should be resisting this, but I'm paralyzed with rage...and island rhythms.'

The Simpsons at its best. Charm has always been at the heart of the reason why I love OFF. This episode has plenty of it. Humour is also great (some typical Mirkin classics "tell the story right"), Homer is on top form and the story successfully crams in a lot for 22 minutes. A

Another brilliant Maggie Simpson episode... *sigh of happiness*
I love the story told of before she was born. How Homer rose to his dream job, then back to his power plant job.
(And maybe overall because Maggie is just so cute!)
My favorite moment is when Homer mentions that he never knew she existed before, and almost sat on her before Bart and Lisa pulled her away, with Homer replying "Hi Maggie." ROFLMAO

One of my all-time favorites! Lots of laughs, lots of character- and emotion-driven stories. "Knight Boat" always makes me laugh, as does Homer's "It's a boy! And WHAT a boy!!!!"
(Maggie looked wierd because they'd made her head kinda squashed, the way babies often are when they first come out; childbirth it NOT a pretty process!)

This episode is great but I don't like it as much as I used to. I just don't find the plot as interesting, perhaps because it focuses too much on Homer, or because I've seen it too much. In fact, this barely felt like a flashback at all, and for worse in my opinion. I know it was inevitable considering the context of the episode (the events take place only 2 years before, after all), but I think one satisfying thing about flashback episodes is the fact that they're in a different environment. This didn't really have that advantage.
And this episode does have some great jokes, with some of the best "fake out" humour in the series, but I have seen this episode a lot so unfortunately it has worn a bit thin with time. Homer's characterisation was very good though and stands the test of time, for now.

humor wise this episode is one of season 6's funniest, but i'm not a fan of the plot. except for the new baby aspect it just seemed like another homer gets a new job episode. the ending is sweet but a bit sappy, and i'll give it props for being a flashback episode without any pop culture references to the year it takes place. i'd put the way we weren't or dangerous curves ahead of this.
