Another classic from the fifth season. All the elements of a classic here: Plenty of one-liners, a decent plot structure, almost perfect characterization, and a nice musical number. Loved the seagulls coming out to sea to die, and the dolphins telling the quartet they're going to die. There isn't much satire, but hey, watch another episode if you want satire and emotion. This one works for me.

Everything except for them being lost is gold. The father son picnic is probably one of the funniest scenes in the show's history. The ending was not very good. Homer smelling his way to a Krusty Burger in the middle of the ocean? Come on we can think of a better ending than that. B+/A-

Exactly what I was going to say! :D 7/10 But just so this isn't a wasted post, I'll leave you with a few one-liners that I loved:
--Flanders: "Godspeed, little doodle."
--Bart: "'Don't do what Donny Don't does.' Ohhh..."
--Homer: "Oh, there's a New Mexico."

This was a great episode, GC summed it up nicely. 9/10. My fav. line was:
Bart: "We were just planning the Father/son river rafting trip"
Homer: "Heh heh, you don't have a son"

One of the best elements in this episode are the problems Homer has with his brain.
The whole money can be exchanged for goods and services gag was gold.
And then when Homer thinks saying yes to the rafting trip will solve the problem of him not wanting to go.
I think that was the best use of that type of gag in the series.
Overall, a solid episode, one of the better of S5. But yes, there was a crappy ending. B+

Ok, you guys reminded me of a few good jokes, that doesn't change the fact that the plot was weak, but it does bump my grade up to C.

Funny enough, even if a tad flawed. My biggest issue, what keeps it from the A range, is Homer's role in the episode. Him picking on Bart when he joins the junior campers is funny enough at first, but becomes downright irritating when it persists throughout the episode. And much of the raft ride isn't as great as it good of been either, again mostly due to Homer's wacky antics. That said, the rest is really fun to watch. Everything with Bart's sugar binge, whether it be the musical number or Lisa's "The few, the proud, the geeky" when he recovers. And Ernest Borgnine sticks out as one of the best self-played guest stars of the show. And, of course, the "Don't do what Donny Don't does" passage. Great.

Funny enough, even if a tad flawed. My biggest issue, what keeps it from the A range, is Homer's role in the episode. Him picking on Bart when he joins the junior campers is funny enough at first, but becomes downright irritating when it persists throughout the episode.
Actually, I don't even think Homer made fun of Bart on more than 2 occassions (when Bart was in his room and when Homer's chair broke), and when Homer did make fun of Bart it was hilarious. "[singing] Egghead likes his booky-books!"
For me, this episode gets a 5/5. Great characterizations all around, and I love when Homer's not in the leading role of the episode because it makes every line he says pure gold. Also, I think the raft ride was perfect because even if it was a bit slow, it was still crammed with jokes. I think I can safely say that this is one of my favorite episodes of all time, and from my favorite season.
Some memorable parts:
"We're saved! Seagulls only go out to sea to die! (plop)"
Homer slapping the crap out of Flanders
"Money can be exchanged for goods and services"
And Homer's sugar dance.

I used to not like this episode. However, I currently think this is a solid episode with a good plot and many laughs. My only complaints are slightly annoying Homer and a rather cop-out ending. Still, 4/5

In an age where we complain about an obnoxious Homer, this episode's portrayal of him hasn't aged too well. But this was still a very funny episode, with Homer's hatred of Flanders being at its best. And the Bart/Milhouse musical spoof is still one of the best in the series.

The first act from Homer's brain saying money can be exchanged for goods and services line to the Our Town parody and the sugar binge is pure genious and possibly the best first act in Simpson History. The rafting trip is also very enjoyable, and there are plenty of one-liners and great gags throughout the episode. While the ending was funny with Homer finding a Krusty Burger on the off-shore oil rig, it could've have been better for the plot if Bart had used his junior camping skills to help save Homer. With that being said it's not going to lower my grade any. A true classic and my second favorite episode.
Homer: Ooohh, Floor Pie!
Dr. Hibbert: This man's appendix is about to burst. Luckily, I have my trused pocketknife.
( Hibbert takes out the appendix, throws it, and the appendix bursts into flames.
Appendix man: Thank you Dr. Hibbert.

An all around good episode (in the B-range) with some good lines. Definitely lacking with the ending...seems a bit forced. Plus the story line seems a little out of character for Bart...but who can deny the fun involved with an all-out squishy bender "Man! That's good squishy," and Homer's hat made from the map always makes for a good visual.

“Boy Scoutz ‘N the Hood” is a gem from the gem-filled season five; it’s not as fantastic as the episodes that surround it, but it’s a pretty damn good episode and I’m glad to be rewatching it today.
The premise of Bart going on a bender and joining the Junior Campers was fantastic – and the father-son raft race was excellent as well, showing some of the most humorous moments in the entire series.
The ending with Ernest Borgnine getting attacked by a Friday the 13th-type figure was a good ending, but I would have rather the episode end on the point of Homer, Ned, Bart, and Rod at the Krusty Burger oil-rig restaurant. But; it doesn’t effect my grade of this episode at all. My favorite moment of the episode was definitely when Ned, Homer, Rod, and Bart were stranded at sea – Homer having to wash his socks with their only water supply was hilarious; the funniest moment of the episode for me. Sugar Sugar, God speed little doodle, and go away, eating were just some highlights of this humor-filled episode.
This episode is so great, I can’t fathom any least favorite moment .. but, gun to my head, I would pick the ending due to – as stated earlier – the reason that I would have liked the episode to end on the state of Homer, Bart, Rod, and Ned. But, once more stated before, it doesn’t effect my grade on the episode.
Overall, this episode is a complete humor-filled, somewhat emotional gem from season five. Watch it – and you’ll be dazzled by this spectacular episode.

i think one of the things mirkin did with the show during his tenure was to make the show faster than it had ever been before. jokes were streaming in constantly and at a faster rate, and the jokes (for me) almost always worked. the effect was that seasons 5 and 6 (and probably season 4) seem denser than any other simpsons seasons, and it's why i rank them as the best of the classic era.
this episode is a great example of that mirkinesque density. essentially, the plot assembles itself around jokes, meaning that there's rarely a moment in the episode without a joke involved, which is awesome. the problem though, is that almost all of the mirkin episodes had the same density as this one, plus a little extra. for example: homer goes to college also gave insight to 'homer logic'; marge on the lam and homer the vigilante had (or were) extended homages; homer the vigilante and bart's inner child parodied mob mentality, etc. the problem with boy socutz n the hood isn't that it does anything wrong (it doesn't), it's just that it has less capacity than some of mirkin's other episodes which we've inevitably got to compare it to.
take a thirsty person and ask them to choose between a full glass of water and a 9/10 filled glass of water. this episode is only 9/10 full. still, those nine tenths are pretty sweet in this case.

This is a very funny episode, but I tell you what, Homer can get bloody annoying. The Homer in this episode really doesn't seem too far away from Scully Homer and he's what let's the episode down. Some of his behaviour is funny, but his selfishness and stupidness reach high levels in this episode.

Boy-Scoutz N the Hood is probably one of my favourite episodes from Season 5. Humour wise, it is very good. Prime examples include Homer's conversation with his brain:
'Twenty dollars can buy many peanuts!
Explain how.
Money can be exchanged for goods and services.'
... and:
Bart - Actually, we were just planning the father-son river rafting trip.
Homer - Heh heh, you don't have a son.
The musical number was also nice, and I didn't feel bored, as the plot was relatively well paced. Also some of the smaller details (like the illustrations in 'Don't do what Donny Don't Does') added some extra amusement to an already very funny episode.
However, the reason I give this episode a 4 instead of a 5 is because Homer acts too stupidly, and his constant mocking of Bart being a Junior Camper. Homer's antics on the raft trip get irritating quickly, and so does his selfish attitude, even when they are close to starving on the dinghy. Also, with a rare father-son bonding episode of the Simpsons, it seemed a shame that there was no real conflict between them, and on the raft they didn't really bond.
Despite this, it gets a 4/5, or in letter terms I'd give it an A-
Nebuchanezzar

i don't find homer's antics irritating. the people on the boat do, but to me that seems like half the point. he's annoying (as in homer's enemy), but that characterisation is to serve a purpose. it demonstrates something that a lot of fans don't seem to want to admit: that homer simpson is in actuality an annoying, irritating twat.
if a character is exaggerated (but not completely transformed) for a purpose in the narrative, that's fine. as far as i'm concerned, it's to be encouraged. when a character is exaggerated for no purpose, or for a purpose that doesn't seem worth it (for the sake of a shitty plot, or a shitty joke), then it's a problem.
that's just my theory though and i'm sure it could be refined. i also give it an A- (5/5)
edit: although apparently i gave it a 4/5 (B+) whenever i voted on this poll...

I rewatched this one today and I did found it to be an all-round entertaining episode with a solid story and some really funny moments, which includes Bart catching Homer in two different traps with pie as bait and Homer singing and dancing with antropomorphic lollipops and ice cream cones in his hallucinatory sequence (great bit); the 'Springfield, Springfield' song is another a nice bit, there are some fun dialogues in the episode as well and I'm a bit torn on the wierd ending with the rest of the campers being attacked at the abanonded camp, but it didn't bother me. Also, what stands out a lot is the fact that Homer, even though pretty funny here, is a obnoxious jerk in this one so I am pretty sure that if this episode came out somewhere during S10 to 12, it wouldn't have been as well recieved.
