Since all the other "post pics of your desktop" threads have gotten old, full of broken image links and images, I'm starting a new one. Plus Comrade wanted everyone to post linkage instead of posting pics... but not this thread!

Just link any pictures wider than 800 pixels.

It's a pic of the side window of my new computer with the colors inverted (in reality white=black & orange=blue etc).

The gay Supes is Captain Marvel. Remember: "Shazam!" The "other Batman" is Dick Grayson's future ID, Red Robin.

Here's a hint. You can fin the Aluminum Alloy winamp skins (2) here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/3040977/

You can also do many things with a program called ResHacker. Google to download it, and you can find all the tutorials you'll ever need on what you can do with it here: http://wint.virtualplastic.net/

And if you don't want the Recycle Bin on your desktop (by now all docks have a local Recycle Bin on the dock, you just have to turn it on) right click on the desktop>Arrange Icons By and uncheck "Show Desktop Icons".

If you want to know how I did what I've done, just ask, but don't fucking bug me non-stop. (Everyone always does :( )

roarke sends his love

lund
10-23-2003, 12:58 PM
The calender and clock were done by a great programer named Rainy. The clock and the calender are done by Rainmeter (http://vapaa.dc.inet.fi/~rainy/Rainmeter.html) and Rainlendar (http://vapaa.dc.inet.fi/~rainy/Rainlendar.html) repectively. The Rainmeter skin is called Rewind (SPECTRE colors) (http://www.skinbase.org/gallery.php?page=3&subcat=&order=2&sorted=dates&uname=moshi&display=1&sections=wallz) recolored by yours truely. (moshi (http://www.skinbase.org/gallery.php?uname=moshi) (creator of the Rainmeter skin) also makes some more kick ass skins you might want to check out). The Rainlender skin is called Moderna (http://www.kryten.demon.co.uk/ross/new/moderna.zip).

I use Y'z Dock, which was discontinued by the author and asked to not be redistrubted (legal troubles with Apple), but you can probably find it by a simple google. I like it the best because of the Docklets, which actually make it better than the actual Mac dock (which is why most people think Apple went after it).

lund~ object dock is getting near the level to replace y'z dock. they have a few issues to work with it taking up less space(works fine 99% of the time here, but i have decent ram). and I think they've got just about as much docklets as Y'z did.

and you can use ICO or PNG for the icons.

You can do all of that with Y'z Dock. :) Plus, I always found it has run faster than ObjectDock.

when was the last time you got object, they gave it a speed overhaul a month or so ago, and i've rarely had problems

well, just saying, with y'z not being updated at all, object will probably overtake it. so I decided not to bother with getting one and switching later.

but, whatever you like best. didn't think y'z supported icos, but was mistaken.

question for the desktop nerds, I was inspired my roarke's and lunds desktop so I cleaned mine up greatly, got object dock and downloaded a set of icons, How can I use the set of icons I downloaded on the dock? There called GANT icons and i got them from devaintart.

lund
10-25-2003, 04:17 PM
I believe with ObjectDock (as with Yz Dock) there's a "icons" folder in the location you installed the dock. Just copy the GANT folder there. Right click on the dock, something along the lines of "Add Shortcut" should be there, add the shortcut and change the icon to the GANT icon you'd like.

And that reminds me, has ObjectDock gotten to the drag a shortcut to the dock and it auto adds thing down yet, like YzDock?

object dock does have the drag and drop, if there was any confusion on milhouse's answers

also, as far as icons go, there is not an icon folder, rather, just put the icon folder in the main object dock folder(probably c:\program files\stardock\

the icon selection just includes any folder with a PNG or ICO in it in the main folder

edit: also, yes, an iCal docklet has been made for object.

It's my desktop notes progam (ATNotes (http://atnotes.fr.st/)). It's there to remind me of things to do, like get The Controtionist's Handbook (it's not at any local book stores, so now I have to stop procrastinating and get it online) and "Bright Eyes" and "Damien Rice" are there to remind me to download their album(s). It's pretty useful if you don't ignore it all the time.

And I need the iCal docklet because the marking I made for the "Today" on the calendar is small and not very noticable. I'm too lazy to make it more noticable, so I just use the iCal thing. Plus, it looks cooler.

And one of the main reasons I'm using YZDock is because once ObjectDock gets out of beta it will become a pay program and it's much easier just using freeware YZDock than crack (which Stardock apps are notriously hard to) ObjectDock.

Roarke
10-25-2003, 11:43 PM

Nice menu you got there going out of the Y'z dock lund. I downloaded a similar dock for Objectdock which is called kkmenu but it's having some problems displaying icons correctly and after 30 days it'll want me to register it, which I won't want to do cuz it'll cost $20.

I might have to go looking for Y'z dock since Objectdock (well mainly kkmenu) isn't going to allow me to do what I want to do.

The menu's kkmenu  . It works with all docklets. It even works as a shortcut on your desktop.

YzDock can do it's own menus, but I haven't gotten to that. But I'd bet there's something in the readme.txt about it.

You can find docklets for YzDock here (http://www.designtechnika.com/main/modules.php?modid=1&action=cat&id=6).

To make kkmenu work with YzDock you do it as a link. For example, here's mine:

Name: " "
Link to: "D:\desktop\kkmenu\KkMenu.exe"
Arguments: "KkMain.ini KkSkinMenuAqua.ini"
Work folder: "D:\desktop\kkmenu\"
Show Command: "Normal"

I noticed that too, takes awhile to make the menu pop-up after clicking for it, and if you move your mouse it populates wherever your mouse is... kinda funky but it's still better than no menu at all.

yeah. exactly. i guess because it is loading the exe everytime you click it, and then closing it everytime you click away. would be nice for a way to make it so that the exe stayed running in the background.

Step 1a - Fixing Windows
-----------------------------------------------------------
Not a fun part, but has to be done in order for ms styles to work.
Link for xp -
http://www.belchfire.net/article205.html
(Follow instructions, there are two files, one for Service Pack 1, one for non)
Server 2003:
http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=10118&category=main&highlight=

Note:There are a few rare cases with XP where neither of the files above work.
Let us know if that happens, there are a few other files to try.

This program(shareware) will do everything for you, but it's very ugly and you should just patch uxtheme. but if you wanted..
http://www.tgtsoft.com/prod_sxp.php

What this does is replace your uxtheme.dll file, allowing all sexy msstyles to work on your computer

Step 1b - MSStyle
-----------------------------------------------------------
What is a msstyle? Well, if you right click your desktop and select properties, and go to the "apperence" tab you can select some horrible microsoft default ones.

But you don't want those, do you.

Note: YOU MUST PATCH YOUR UXTHEME OR BE USING STYLE XP BEFORE YOU USE THESE THEMES. it is very very annoying to try to get your computer working if you accidentally use a theme with an unpatched uxtheme(I know from experience).

With that caution out of the way,

Msstyles replace nearly everything. Scroll bars, buttons, colors, more. once you patch you uxtheme, you can download them like you download wallpapers, mix and match, etc. Just get the files and put them in your resource\themes folder, usually

C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes

Give them their own folder and put them there. In your display propterties, go to your display tab, and you should see them all there.

http://www.hammerheadtech.net/sosumi/files/mafia/mafia_preview.jpg

Note: If it doesn't appear in the appearnces tab, double clicking and .msstyle will get it up and running.

Step 2 - wp
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pretty easy. Download, set as background. You should know this. Here are hot links

http://meredith.deviantart.com
http://www.designchapel.com/

Step 3 - Icons
-----------------------------------------------------------
Tips on replacing Icons:
My Computer, My Desktop, Recycle Bin(Full and empty) and network places may be replaced through:
Display Properties->Desktop->Customize Desktop...

Most File Type Icons(the standard for .mp3, .jpg, .gif, .htm etc. etc.) by going to any folder and...

Tools->Folder Options...->File Type Tab
Click the desired file type, click advanced, and click change icon. Navigate to chosen Icon picture.

Folder Icons may be replaced by right clicking the folder, selecting properties, going to the customize tab and selecting Change Icon(Not Choose picture)

System Icons and other various stuff windows doesn't like you touching(My Music, My Pictures, etc, Drive stuff) Can be replaced by using a shareware program such as..

http://www.stardock.com/products/iconpackager/

Or replacing the shell32 file. More on this later.

Links to Hot Icons(Under heavy construction):

Step 4a - The Dock
-----------------------------------------------------------
Windows has always been known for stealing Mac's UI Awesomeness. Here we go again, and in many eyes, improve on the actually os x dock.

The major reason of improvement are docklets, little programs users can make and put in their dock to give it ever-increasing power and function

There are currently two highly circulated dock programs for windows xp and higher.

notes on each

ObjectDock
-----------
*Currently still worked on and updated
*In beta stage right now
*Backed by Stardock, a company, so the guy is actually paid to make this program
*A good amount of Docklets
*While Being backed by stardock is a plus in terms that there is motivation, Stardock is also notorious for never giving anything for free. It is freeware for now, but it is nearly certain this will change once it is officially released.

Y'z Dock
-----------
*The original as far as any desktop geek is concerned
*100% Freeare
*Greater amount of docklets
*No Longer under development due to a C&D order by The Apple Corp.
*Docklets stilla re being developed

Step 4b - Improving your Dock
-----------------------------------------------------------
Icons for the dock~
First, see Step 3. Put any of those in your dock folder and you can use those.

Your dock, no matter which you're using, is highly customizable. Backgrounds can be changed, Icons, and the best part: docklets

Docklets so far add a menu to your dock, Control Winamp, Control iTunes, View current weather, display an iCal-esque date, Display the time, and other fun things.

up

Misc.
-----------
Other stuff that should be included, but don't have much info on.

http://www.tsoftcentral.com/tools/index.html

Remember - to make these pop up on start up, just put them in your start up menu(it's in your start menu)

Step 6 - Minor Tweaks
-----------------------------------------------------------
This stuff is just to adjust the fine details of your system. If you don't trust yourself in editing system files, you probably don't wantto attempt this stuff.
The above stuff is more than enough to make your desktop hot. But, if you're up to it..

Step 7 - Other Tips
-----------------------------------------------------------

arrange icons by..." and uncheck "Show Desktop Icons

I'll get more up as questions are asked.

Final Comments
-----------------------------------------------------------
This will be edited from time to time, and i may get it all htmled out someday.

If i add anything major, i'll put up a new post, other wise, I'll just edit this post.

http://www.studiotwentyeight.com/main.htm (click icons)

Step 3b - Converting Mac Icons to PC
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here's how you can get the awesome icons for mac only on your PC.

First thing's first, you'll need the tools.
http://dump.delamente.net/dump/STUFFIT7.EXE - Stuffit Expander 7 will allow you to extract Mac .hxq (the equivalent of a zip file for macs)
http://www.axialis.com/iconworkshop/index.html - Axialis Iconworkshop will allow you to convert Mac icons extracted from the hxq to .ico format. This is shareware, so you'll have to buy it, or borrow it from someone, or somehow get a full copy after 30 days.

Install Expander and Iconworkshop. Open Expander and goto View>Options. Under the Cross Platform tab make sure the options are selected in this order:
Always
Always
Never

Find some cool mac icons to convert and download the hqx. Here are two good resources for mac icons:
http://www.iconfactory.com/
http://www.xicons.com/

For this part of the tutorial, we'll convert Smoothicons, which you can get here: http://www.iconfactory.com/preview.asp?type=search&id=110&query=Corey%20Marion (There is also 2-7 packs for this, you can convert them all)

If you closed Expander, open it back up again and drop the hqx file into Expander. A folder should be created (it might look a little weird because Steve Jobs is a crazy person. For example, my folder has a "ƒ" at the end. Yeah.) and somewhere in there are Icons. In this pack they're in a folder called "The Icons" (imagine that).

Open Iconworkshop and hit CTRL+E to open an explorer menu in Iconworkshop. Browse to where the Mac icons are. (You should see previews of your delicious new icons. If you don't, you didn't select the Cross Platform options right in Expander. Go change them.) CTRL+A to select all. Right click and click "Batch Create Windows Icons From Selection..." Here I suggest you leave the defaults, except checking all of the Extra Format options to make them extra high quality and press OK. Keep the selection and just hit DEL to delete all of the mac icons.

And there you go, cool mac icons in windows format.

I do it by converting the icons to pngs using Iconworkshop.

okay.. the thing i was talking about is a really simple program that changes your windows style to something other than the default windows styles. i don't want something to overhaul my desktop, i'm just tired of the current choices. desktop above is also very cool.

and it wasnt winstyles, it didn't require downloading a thousand other programs that i dont need and only slow my computer down.

i want this fucking program back right now. it had a bunch of styles that were similar to default windows ones, but were actually cool. i hate default blue, and can only stand silver/olive for so long. classic is the only one i really like.

note: style xp does the SAME THING as a patched xp, except stylexp's ugly and not free.

the only thing you have to download to get it work the other way are the themes themselves and a program to patch them.

Roarke
10-30-2003, 06:36 PM
it's in the turtorial, it's the beltchfire link

You run the one according to you, it patchs you uxtheme.dll for you. restart, download whatever themes you want(we gave you links)

it isn't much work(10 mins) and it works with no other programs. you can delete the patcher after you install it, and from there on out windows will handle them like it was one of their crappy default

read step 1 of tutorials(a and b). that's what you want

Ok I need major help figuring out the dock thing. Having never used a mac before, some help with this would be greatly appreicated.

First of all, what IS a dock, and what does it do?

Ok so I downloaded Y'z dock...and I ran yzdock.exe. What it did is make this little box thing at the bottom of my screen, which moves when I mouse over it. I expect this is what is supposed to happen. Anyway, I don't really know what it does, and HOW to make it do these things in basic terms.

One thing that is bugging me about it is it overlaps into all windows I have open. Maybe it does this because it's an extension of my bar. (I call it a bar because I don't know whether to call it a toolbar or a taskbar). Is there any way to stop it from doing this overlapping thing? or is the only way to set it so my bar goes away after a couple seconds without mousing over it.

Also, how do I put my bar at the top like a tru nerd?

Ok, Roarke helped me with the dock. I now have some more problems with it however.

firstly: I tried to drag SmartFTP to the dock...and it said something was wrong with the image or something, so it was in there with no image. I tried to delete it, and I did...but I got some error (that I forget). Now there is no icon, just a name for SmartFtp that doesn't even link anywhere. I can't even drag it onto my desktop to get rid of it. How can I get rid of it? do I have to re-install the dock? if I do, where do I uninstall it?

secondly: whenever I reboot, the dock goes away and I have to reinstall (the first time I did it) or re-open the program (the second time I did it). Is there anyway to have it open automatically on startup?

ps. I'm using yz or whatever it's called.

EDIT: First problem fixed. Second is still in need of help.

Copy a shortcut to YzDock to C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ and it will start up everything you start windows. This also applies to any program that you add a shortcut to to Startup.

If you're like me and you like to have your desktop available for storing files temporarily, but still want to get rid of your recycle bin to keep the ultra-sex appeal, I've found a solution.

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article05-013

Download the little reg-file and you're supposed to be able to right click -> delete the recycle bin after you install it.

I wasn't able to right click -> delete, but I was able to drag a "selection square" to highlight my recycle-bin, then hit my "Delete" key and it deleted the recycle bin.

Now I just use my sexy-dock recycle bin, and I can still create temp folders and download files directly to my desktop and see them without turning on/off desktop items.

I don't use Iconpackager. I use Shell32 replacements. Either way, that doesn't replace application icons. You have to reshack them. Some of them wont let you (ie iTunes), but most will.

Anotherthing lund...this should be a pretty quick question.

I used iconpackager to change most of my icons, and it's looking pretty good.

Except.

I can't get the new icons to work on the dock. (I use y'z).

For example, I'll have my computer. I'll drag it to the dock, but instead of the funky GANT icon it will display the system icon. Ok, says I...I'll change it. I right click on the shortcut on the dock and hit property of dock icon/change icon. I find I have to put the icon I want in the yzdock icon subfolder...which I do. But the icon comes out all funky when it's in the subfolder...like really warped and stuff.

Please help.

EDIT: I also had the same question phat morbo had before about changing icons in iconpackager. Also, how do you delete the recycle bin off of your desktop?

Double bump

Since I'm bored and remembered this, I'll explain the Shell32 for Sam, and whoever else.

Shell32 is a dll file (Shell32.dll) in your system that holds the information for basically a big chunk of the UI. It can be customized (although microsoft doesn't nessicarally want you to) with new icons, bmps, ect.

You can either download a program called Resource Hacker (http://www.users.on.net/johnson/resourcehacker/), open the dll you want (in this case, C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll) and start replacing icons.

Or you could download pre-made shell32s and just apply those. For example, I made (back when I didn't have a job to eat up my time) an Shell32 "Pack" for GANT and released it to the public.

To apply a Shell32 you can either do it the hard, more controlled way (which I wont explain now) or the easier way, using a program called Replacer (http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/) to replace all of the system files in the pack. Simple as that.

Here are some links to Shell32 (and Shell32 packs):
GANT Shell32 Pack for Server 2003 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/3216788/)
GANT Shell32 Pack for SP1 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/3316332/)
iCandy Junior Pack for SP1 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/3927802/)
And a bunch other over here (http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/modules.php?modid=4&action=cat&id=10).

Note: It is VERY important you install only the Shell32 (or Shell32 pack) for your installation of XP. Do NOT try to install a SP1 pack onto a Sever 2003. Unless you like reinstalling Windows, that is.

And just to keep the theme going:

P.S. Don't ask me how to use replacer, it's an incredibly self explanitory program.

And before one of you complain that the icons aren't showing up, clear your icon cache (TweakUI>Repair>Rebuild Icons>Repair Now) and reboot.
