Grade: A+

2nd best Bob episode (behind only "Sideshow Bob Roberts") to date. It does a great job parodying the storyline and atmosphere (minus the sexual tension) of "Cape Fear", mixing it with near perfect slapstick (the in/famous rakes, Bob's run in with the cacti, the parade) with ingenious side tangents ("Up Late with McBain", Lisa's pen pal letter) and absurd situational humor (Bob singing the score fro the "H.M.S. Pinafore"). It's not exactly the style I prefer from "The Simpsons", but there's no style that I would suggest the writers solely peruse, and this episode is the best of its kind as an atmospheric, parodic, slapstick farce.

A VERY good episode which is incredibly funny. First, the flaws. The rake scene, while funny and memorable, goes on for far too long. That's the intention, since the writers needed to fill up some time. Some parts of the episode are absurd and cartoonish - Sideshow Bob being trampled on by elephants, the props used for HMS Pinafore - a drop-down British flag, a Playbill, etc. It seemed rather Looney Tunes at times. It may sound like I'm being overly critical, but I really do like this episode. My personal favourite parts include Homer still not getting the idea that he's now Homer Thompson, and the little homage to the opening credits, with The Thompsons.

I have seen these one today at lunch time... and it was better than I remembered! I found something strange. Did you notice what´s wrote in Homer´s big cigar? "Knoxville World Fair 1983"... then 2 seasons later, we found that the fair was on 1982... it´s not important, but quite curious.

In the commentary for "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Badassssss Song", David Mirkin mentioned that one of the great things about Homer is that when he's pushed to the side of an episode's plot, he can be the most valuable character on the show, because then everything he does or says is gold. I believe "Cape Feare" is the best example of that, and it's the reason I noticed this "sporadic Homer effect" long before Mirkin explained it in that commentary.

I remember one time when I watched this episode for the first time in a long while, and ended up laughing at seemingly every single thing Homer said or did and thought he'd never been funnier. I adore the scene with the Witness Relocation Program agents and Homer so much that I used to recite it verbatim to amuse my friends. And that's not to say that Bart and Sideshow Bob aren't fantastic in the episode too...it's just that even though this episode is about them, I'll always think of it as one of the finest examples of Homer at his best.

When I first saw this episode, I didn't like it that much because it was such a large departure from the previous Sideshow Bob episodes. However, after watching it many times since, it has grown to be one of my very favorite Bob episodes. The writing and animation are both excellent, making it a great last episode for the original writing staff.

Its one of the show's most well known episodes for a reason.

Nothing too heavy satire wise, but its just such an incredibly entertaining episode and it does it in a distinct way I can't imagine any other show doing quite the same way. The animation for its time was also excellent, some great use of shading. And every character was at their best balance here, especially Bart. It was also arguably Sideshow Bob's best moments in the series. You know you got some legendary moments in this, the thing with everything scaring Bart in bed, the scene where the Simpsons become the Thompsons, Bake em away Toys, Bob under the car, the musical scene in the end. Its all just great stuff, its probably one of the top 5 best paced and written episodes. Everything rolled out exceedingly smoothly. When a 20-25 minute episode feels much much longer you know the writing was pretty good.

By far the best Sideshow Bob episode. Excellent episode.

Now for the criticisms:

The story is taken almost completely from movies. I mean beat for beat paradies..It's the same thing. Music and all. Overall - not very original idea.

However, they twisted it just enough so that it works. If you hadnt seen the movies - then the episode just looks like a great original masterpiece. Having seen them adds some quick laughs at the paradies, but also shows the lack of originality.

The rake scene was pretty stupid. Im not sure how else to put it. It's a bad Family Guy gag. At the time - the idea of a long joke was pretty original so it was unique and funny. Its not a gag that ages well though.

You can tell Family Guy tried to build on a few classic Simpson moments - but with little other substance it has struggled.

Clearly a 5/5 - but not the best episode ever.

I like the rake scene, which is rare since I don't usually care for extended gags like that. Maybe it has to do with the fact that The Simpsons doesn't usually do slapstick gags like that, and yet this was one of the most slapstick episodes. It was unusual and that made it funny to me. I've laughed even more in every subsequent episode in which Bob steps on a rake (though he usually only steps on one). Throwback gags FTW! If they did another extended rake scene, that would suck.

I love this episode, but it's so overrated. Here are the flaws.

1. The rake scene. Extended gags are always annoying, and this one isn't funny.

2. The Homer Thompson scene. We get it, Homer is dumb. It goes on for too long.

3. The score to the HMS Pinafore being sung by Sideshow Bob. It is annoying and, like an earlier poster mentioned, a cartoony moment. They could have probably came up with a better ending.

This episode is full of hilarious moments ("BART DO YOU WANNA SEE MY CHAINSAW AND HOCKEY MASK!?!?!?" is great) but suffers from extended gags. The episode is almost all slapstick, and while there is nothing wrong with that if it is funny like it is here, other episodes do it better, like Last Exit to Springfield or Mr. Plow. Great episode, not one of the best. 4.5/5

I think this is the best Sideshow Bob episode along with Brother from another series. Thought it was hilarious the way Sideshow Bob was strapped under the car the whole journey and also him being trampled by the parade. The rake scene did go on a bit long and I'm not a fan of those scenes that are being funny by going on forever but whatever. Homer running into Bart's room with the knife was funny as well. For sheer volume of laughs, this one is king. Nonstop humor, purely classic, and Sideshow Bob at his very best. A simple plot, padded with hilarious scenes, and done just right makes this among the best episodes ever. Here is my ranking of the classic sequences:

#1 Sideshow Bob Steps On Rakes
#2 BART DO YOU WANT SOME BROWIES BEFORE YOU GO TO BED????
#3 The H.M.S. Pinafore
#4 Homer Thompson
#5 Parole (the Bart, the)
#6 The giant parade over Bob (no not the elephants!)
#7 Strapped under the car and through the cactuses
#8 In the theater (especially Bob getting mixed up: "Stay away...FOREVER!")
#9 Bart's Paranoia
#10 The death threats

And George Cauldron, you say the rakes went on too long? Apparently you missed the whole point. I mea, that was a piece of real genius. There is no mounting irritation, not the slightest change between each rake step, there is only one cut in the entire scene: when the camera pans out to reveal rakes scattered all around the car for no reason whatsoever, all "accidentally" pointing towards Bob(which is so random and ridiculous it makes you laugh twice as hard). It repeats over and over: turn, step, thud, nnrnrgrhh; proceeding steadily from funny to funnier to unfunny to the funniest thing ever. This is the Hilarity of Complete Randomness on a scale not seen until the peak of South Park. 5/5

This is, without a doubt, the Most Brilliant Episode in Simpsons History! It's my absolute favorite Simpsons episode of all-time and it's one of the first episodes that really got me into watching The Simpsons. This episode had a brilliantly hilarious script, with the kind of dark parody that I love in The Simpsons. The use of the theme music from the movie Cape Fear (or The Sideshow Bob theme as I like to call it) was excellent. This episode contained some of my favorite moments in Simpsons history like the witness protection scene, the rake scene, the butcher knife gag, and my most personal favorite, the HMS Pinafore scene. Overall this is the greatest episode in Simpsons history. This episode alone was my reason for buying the season 5 DVD.

I've gotta say, I'm surprised by how well liked this episode is. I like it as well, and I'd give it a 4/5. However, isn't anyone else bothered by the resolution to this episode?

So Bart has Bob sing the HMS Pinafore to buy some time. Bob is a vain guy, so I guess that's believable. But then why is Chief Wiggum right there to arrest him when they make it back to Springfield? Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see any reason for Wiggum to be there beyond "we need him there to arrest Bob."

Other than that, this is definitely a great episode. The Homer Thompson bit, Homer maniacally screaming at Bart in bed (HEY BART DO YOU WANNA SEE MY NEW CHAINSAW AND HOCKEY MASK), Bob explaining his Die, Bart, Die tattoo and then the woman saying "anyone who speaks German couldn't be an evil man"...I mean, it's all great comedy. And it really is a good parody of Cape Fear, and if you've seen the DeNiro version I'm sure you'd agree it's ripe for the picking.

However, that resolution does kinda bother me. And the rake bit is definitely overplayed and annoying. So it's a great episode, but I think it falls just short of being an all-time classic to me. I would agree, though, that it's the best Sideshow Bob episode. I'd probably give this one a 4/5, maybe a 5/5 if I was feeling generous. "Nonstop humor" is definitely an accurate description of this episode.

I've always loved this episode. The first time I saw it, I laughed so hard all the way throughout. I love the scene where Homer can't learn his new name. Then there's all things that happen to Bob on the Simpsons, or Thompsons drive to there new home. The rakes are great. Santa's Little Helper tied up out back. Just very very funny all the way around. Not only is this episode funny, but it also has a great plot. This is also the episode where I feel that Bob is the most evil because he actually was going to kill Bart. One of the best episodes of the sereis. A well-earned 5/5

Cape Feare is probably the best sideshow Bob episode, for one thing it has funny jokes through out the entire episode and the scene where the FBI agent says to Homer ''now when I stomp on your foot you smile you nood '' and Homer just gives a blank and stupid look to him,I would give this episode a 5/5.

This episode is hugely overrated, I think.

First off, they go overboard on a couple of things. The rake scene is a bit ridiculous and goes on for way longer than it should. The Homer Thompson thing also goes on for way longer than it should. Both jokes are funny, for the first few seconds or so, then it just drags on.

Second, I hate the jokes where, for example, "Bart, I'm gonna get you!!!......Some ice cream...." Those three or so jokes in the episode really annoy me. And Homer jumping on Bart's bed twice, scaring him, were more overboard jokes that annoy me as well. I don't know how to describe why exactly they annoy me, they just do.

Nothing is wrong with the pacing of the episode or the actual plot itself. There are some good jokes, but a lot of overboard and annoying stuff. I have watched this episode numerous times trying to like it more than I do, but just can't really get into it. The episode has it's moments, but it's not that enjoyable to me. None of the Sideshow Bob episodes are really that enjoyable to me. The only two I can really get into are 'Sideshow Bob Roberts' and 'Brother From Another Series.'

Overall Rating: C (3.5/5)

a great episode from the 5th season. Bob's best episode (except for maybe Brother From Another Series). I love so many gags in this episode. Almost every single scene in this episode makes me laugh. so many moments i love:

the opening with McBain (Which i don't think a lot of people liked, but for me it always makes me laugh)

Mrs. K: You're going to be my murder victim Bart. In our school production of Lizzie Borden, with Martin Prince as Lizzie!
Martin: Forty whacks with a wet noodle Bart!

the mr. Thompson scene, whilst showcases Homer's extreme stupidity, does so in a hilarious way

the 'infamous' rake scene.

marge: you awful man! stay away from my son.
bob: oh I'll stay away alright. Stay away forever! wait, that's no good. I got it! Marge, say "stay away from my son" again.
marge: no!
(Bob's grunt)

Sideshow Bob has no deceny. He called me "Chief Piggum." (Everyone laughs) Oh I get it. Hehe, that's funny.

Selma: Sideshow Bob tried to kill me on our honeymoon.
Blue Haired Lawyer: How many people in this courtroom are thinking about killing her right now? (A few people raise their hands) Be honest. (More people do, including Patty)
Patty: She's always leaving the toilet seat up.

all of those moments made me laugh, as well as most other lines in the episode. Bob episodes are generally a delight for me and this is certainly no exception. Definitely one of his top appearances, if not the top

The best episode of season 5 and one of my very favourites.
The best sideshow bob episode too.
An absolute classic i give this a 5/5

Homer: "Bart do you wanna brownie?!!!"
Homer runs into Bart's room waving around a butchers knife.
Bart: AHHHHHH!!!
Homer: Come on let me cut you a brownie while it's still hot."
Bart: "Dad, I'm a little edgy right now so i would appreciate it if you didn't come screaming into my room brandishing a butchers knife!"
Homer: "What? Oh, the Sideshow bob thing! Sorry son."
Homer leaves and Bart begins to relax.
Homer: Bart! Do you wanna see my new chainsaw and hockey mask?!!!"
Bart: AHHHHH!!!

A GREAT EPISODE... But to be honest it isn't as strong years leter. I wish they would explore The Simpsons changing their lifes as the Thompsons a little bit more... But yhe! Chainsaw part made me cry of laughter! ;)

It's funny. When I saw it for the first time - when I was young and didn't know who Sideshow Bob is - it stock in my head for years that the killer who was after Bart was in fact a realistic drawn guy... Ow, well.

Wow. I had this down as overrated until I re-watched just now.

Fantastic episode. And whilst not the funniest Bob episode (Sideshow Bob Roberts wins that title), it's by far the most dramatic, which is what I love so much about it. It actually works in combining some very funny jokes with a dramatic plot (thanks to the music and the animation direction, the atmosphere is spot on) and I like that Bob actually gets close to killing Bart. I don't think it's perfect, some gags did miss (Grandpa and his medication) and it sorta lost steam with the HMS Pinafore bit, but still an excellent episode nonetheless.

Ah, 'Cape Feare'. Episodes like 'Last Exit to Springfield' and this are almost found in every 'Top Ten Simpsons Episodes' online articles. However, whilst LETS is overrated (still great, but no masterpiece), 'Cape Feare' defnitely deserves a rightful place in those top tens. It's almost universally loved, and with good reason too, as I'll outline now.

One reason as to why I love this episode is that it is funny. Very, very funny. I found myself laughing almost nonstop throughout the episode. Pretty much every joke works. At the beginning of the first act 'Up Late With McBain' and Lisa's letter from her pen pal had me laughing out loud. So did most following scenes in the first act. Bart paranoid about the people around him. Chief Wiggum thinking that mailing people threatening letters isn't against the law. The first act was funny, but the funniest act of the three was the second. The scene at the court (who can forget 'Die, Bart, Die'?) and the scene at the cinema had some very funny lines and moments. Those weren't the only bits though. The detective's attempts to force Bob to leave town were hilarious, as were the scenes at the Witness Relocation centre ('Homer Thompson'). Finally, I loved 'Well, two against one!' The third act was still very funny, but there were a few jokes that bugged me. Firstly, I don't find the rake scene that funny. It's humourous for the first few times he steps on the rakes, but it just drags after a while, and doesn't magically become funny again. Also, I didn't think the scene where Bob is trampled on by the street parade is that funny. The final moment I really remember laughing at in the episode, is Homer bursting into Bart's room.

So, as I have covered (in unecessary detail as I tend to do), the humour in this episode is fantastic. Is this the only thing great about the episode? No. Firstly the premise is a good one. Bob tries to kill Bart. Sure, many episodes are along that line, but this is the first, and no doubt is the best. Another great thing about this episode, and something that is present in most classic Bob episodes is drama and tension. Despite the numerous funny moments, and moments of slapstick, there was genuine tension in the episode. At first, when Bart is sent the threatening messages. Then at the end, as he is trapped on the boat - it's scary being chased by an escaped convict, but even scarier when in an isolated environment. The tension was largely helped by the music, and the animation, which had some great moments (like in the Bates Motel, where Bob is writing down his plan to kill Bart). Another thing to mention about the animation, is how full of life and expressive the characters are, especially Bart and Bob. Contrast it to the lifeless animation of nowadays... The only thing I didn't like overall plotwise, was the ending which was a bit odd. Not terrible, though.

In conclusion, I love 'Cape Feare'. Though it has a few negative aspects to it, it has so many positive things going for it that make it one of the show's finest efforts.

5/5

This is a Jean & Reiss episode, just so you know...

And I rewatched this recently because I got the season 5 DVD, and whilst I still find it very funny, the tension just didn't last this time around and you really notice points where they're trying to fill time, which just clogs the episode. I do like the plot idea (in that respect it's the best - and simplest - Bob episode) but its execution wasn't great.

I still think this episode is strong, but not as much as before. A- Probably will be low in my top 50.
