I really liked this one. Seemed much more halloweeny than in recent years. I can't go into too much detail yet so as not to spoil. My favorite act was the second act, Pierce did a great job. And one of the acts is a bit gross, you'll know it when you see it.

One for one so far this season! Great job.

For what it's worth, USA Today really bashed this episode, saying it's the worst THOH ever. Hopefully it wasn't made under the new Al Jean regime if that's true.

Well, USA today can kiss my ass. they're stupid idiots that probably never seen any other THOH episodes before.

Review: "Hex and the City"

Heh heh. I thought this one was pretty good. I loved the joke with the Lucky Charms, and with the different creatures living in the hole ("pixie, Katie Couric...). It was always nice to see Kang and Kodos, as usual!

Grade: A- (92%)

Looking forward to the rest of the episode!

Review: "House of Whacks"

Also liked this one a lot. Nice voice over by Pierce Brosnan. Slightly gory, but the gore isn't focused on too much. Some of the lines were pretty good ("Mmm, unexplained bacon...) The much-needed part with Patty and Selma was pretty funny!

Grade: A- (92%)

Review: "Wiz Kids"

Didn't like this one as much as the other two, but it was still pretty good. Interesting story. There was a much-appreciated appearance by Ralph ("Dying tickles!). Also liked Homer's line "We stayed for your kids!", and Milhouse's lousy magic trick at the recital (what happened was a first!). The wailing wall wasn't bad. I liked that it it didn't go too overboard with the magic stuff.

Grade: B (85%)

Review: Ending Part (over credits)

Pretty funny as well. I missed some of it due to a phone call, but I can watch it again since I recorded the episode. Good anyway.

Grade: A- (92%)

Overall Episode Grade: A- (90%)

I liked this THOH a lot! Lots of great jokes were packed into this one, and most were pulled off with nicely! Here's to an excellent season! Cheers!

Yes it was, Hex and the city was good.

House of Whacks is starting off pretty good.

I'm looking forward to Wiz Kids 'cause I read the Harry Potter books and are kind of cool, but let's not start a book reviews topic here.

The "House of Whacks" story brought this episode up A LOT! It was very Halloweeny, and had great jokes, and felt like it was well-written. The decorations intro was funny, as well as the end credits. "Wiz Kids" had some good jokes, but ended a bit abruptly. "Hex in the City" was a little too crazy for me, even for a Halloween special. But it was great with Yoda, Kang, and Kodos. Overall, there were A LOT of chuckles, and few laugh out loud moments to make this is good episode. IMO, better than the last two Halloween specials. And I can't believe Matthew Perry did that voice...and I didn't know he was guest-starring in advance!

Hex in the City: 6/10
House of Whacks: 9/10
Wiz Kids: 7/10
Intro: 9/10
Credits: 8/10

OVERALL: 8/10

Hey wuts up fellow Simpsons Fans? I thought tonights Treehouse Of Horror was pretty good, I would give it a A- overall. I liked all 3 parts of the episode. This years Treehouse Of Horror was alot better than last years. I liked the Leprechaun alot, he was very funny especially when he was humming that irish tune. The opening was funny, Homer as Fred Flintstone was hillarious, same with Wilma as Marge. Well thats my opinion on tonights episode, gonna stay logged on to the board to see everyone elses thoughts.

Woo hoo!

House of Whack rules! They made a great decision in choosing Pierce Brosnan.

Wiz Kids is excellent, and just in time for the Harry Potter release!

Awesome, I'm going to hit rewind and watch it again before going to bed.

This was better than Season 11 and 12's THOH episodes, IMO.

"House of Whacks" was my favorite, due to an excellent use of Brosnan. Loved the ending to that one with Patty & Selma, and it was the most "Halloweeny," as Jonah said.

"Hex in the City" was solid and was my second favorite. Leprechaun gags in The Simpsons are still gold. The wedding at the end was wacky, but hilarious.

"Wiz Kids" was also solid, but not too memorable. But, the classroom scene was great as was Smithers the snake devouring Burns.

And I wasn't expecting the ending.. good stuff. Grade: A-

I agree 100%, Eric. This was the third best THoH, ever. Only Five and Nine were better. The only slow spot was the opening, but other than that, it was steller. And as others have said, the credit scene was great.

Hex in the City: A. The randomness and the little jokes in the backgroudn made this one the best of the three, IMO. See the sign on the Gypsy HQ that read: "After hours use automatic teller."? LOL!

House of Whacks: A. Pierce was a hoot and the robotic Gill was neat, too.

Wiz Kids: B+. Nothing wrong with this one other than it was the weakest of the three. Best line: Lisa. "This isn't my wand--It's a Twizzler!"

definitely a good start to the season.

I can't over the leprachaun......sooo funny. Eric, he now has to be on the "fav THOH character" poll!

And the "unexplained bacon" line was so money!
"Lisa, I'm missing half my head...."

Oh yeah! And in the 3rd act, that "frog prince" that bart conjured up...HA HA HA HA!! It just kept on puking!

The Smithers devouring Burns moment was absolutely hysterical. God was that funny.

House of Whacks was an awesome segment, and the ending was great.

Didn't know if I liked the beginning, though, but still very good overall.

Great episode. A.

USA Today= All Knowing

This is easily THE WORST Treehouse of Horror yet. Homer is even more annoying than ever before. I can count the number of laughs on my hand. Still, it could have been ok if it had some Halloween charm. Instead, it was a string of uninspired stories (Leprechaun and Gypsy?, Harry Potter?) that had nothing to do with Halloween. I was expecting so much thanks to last year's spectacular THOH, but I'm having doubts as to whether or not television's greatest show will ever return to at least half its former glory.

Rowdy, I think you are confusing your THOH episodes. Please correct at your earliest convenience.

Centaur
11-06-2001, 07:10 PM
Maybe Rowdy was just quoting the USA today. Well, whoever wrote that doesn't realize that it doesn't have to be purely halloween constantly. It's sposed to be crazy, strange, with a mix of halloweeny.

I thought tonight's episode was very cool.

"Hex and the City" was awsome, the Leprechaun Trap scene was awsome.

"House of Whacks" wasn't as funny as Hex and the City but was still very cool.

"Wiz Kids" wasn't what I expected it to be, but it turned out great, actually I understood every bit of that one 'cause of the Harry Potter books. He appeared, as the flaming gum kid, that was Harry Potter.

Overall I give it a 8/10. Very nice work, good THOH episode.

i didnt like the opening scene as much as some from past years, but it was still decent. hex and the city was great, as was house of whacks. i loved the mmmm unexplained bacon. wiz kids i didnt care for as much but...the snake smithers eating burns...that was his best scene since his women and seamen dont mix line. as for a grade...definitely better than last years and id give it b+/a-

Rowdy, by your logic, the one where homer goes back in time and changes the future is not a halloween episode. And what do killer dolphins have to do with halloween?

Tomacco
11-06-2001, 07:38 PM
Aside from Rowdy's review, the feeling here is pretty consistent - that it was an overall good to very good episode. I don't think I would ever call last year's THOH 'spectacular', Rowdy, but it's your opinion. Plus, you didn't mention House of Whacks, which was VERY Halloweeny and had some gore too. Best of the ep!

My detailed review is posted here:

I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. Although I thought the plots were a bit unfocused (especially Hex and the City--ending up at the wedding? Nothing was resolved! oh well), there were a lot of laughs.

Many, many really good jokes: the Trix rabbits, Marge covered in hair, Maggie as a cockroach (I'm sure parodying Kafka's Metamorphosis), mmmm...unexplained bacon (it's been a while), British charm plugs (there was a definite British charm motif), Matthew Perry's line had me cracking up, and Smithers the snake devouring Burns--the funniest (and most disturbing) moment of the entire episode!

My biggest complaint is probably that these stories aren't very Halloweenish...not scary. I guess I'm just a fan of the traditional elements: devils, vampires, and zombies. Oh well. Overall very good.

Monkey's paw had nothing to do with halloween. ANything with Kang and Kodos has nothing to do with halloween.

Actually, I have to agree with you Rowdy. I was pretty impressed by last year's Halloween Special, which was more focused, well-plotted, and even a little spooky. The only one I liked this year was the house-computer. The first one was wacky, had nothing memorable, and the leprachaun was exceedingly annoying. And for the Harry Potter parody, it seemed like the writers didn't even read the series.

wasnt that a parody of..either a twilight zone or a story...i know i read it in story form once...which is a valid thing. i think it would be great if every ep could parody some movie, but theres only so much they can do. granted there are many movies/stories that they havent used, but a lot of them people wouldnt recognize

Hex in the city was okay...not many laugh out loud moments though.

House of Whacks was super funny, but i didnt like the gore: the blood and homer's brain.

Wiz Kids was pretty good.

I can't really review this right now, cuz I'll have to watch the episode again to remember the funniest parts and such.

But one thing I didnt really like about it was the unhalloweeniness of it, as some of you already mentioned. But overall, I'd give it a B+, maybe an A-.

P.S. I REALLY liked last year's THOH ep, I thought it was SUPER funny.

Opening: Pretty funny, it was good to see Smithers and Burns again.

Hex and the City: I don't know about this one, not really very good. The Kang and Kodos reappearance was somewhat funny (not as funny as previous cameos though), and the Lucky Charms/Trix gag was great. I dispised the killing of Bart at the end, though. What happened to them not killing the main family members? It was a alot better before they started killing them along with the secondaries IMO. Basically, just could have been a lot better.

House of Whacks: Much better, Pierce Brosnan was great as the HAL-lookalike supercomputer. I also liked seeing Patty and Selma again. Overall, an hilarious addition to the special.

Whiz Kids: Second best. My knowledge of Harry Potter is limited, but there were a few nice references. The Smithers/Slithers eating Burns/Montymort bit was great, as was the puking toad. Not the best, but funny.

Ending: Didn't quite click with me, but it was alright. As Tomacco mentioned too, what happened to the alternate credit names?

Final note: Anyone else notice that Maude appears under Krusty on the Wailing Wall? And I think someone looking like Bleeding Gums is there too somewhere, as well as a Scratchy.

EXTREMELY unfocused, but creativity and inventiveness make up for it heavily. In "The Wiz Kids", jokes like "Abracadairy" and the Harry Potter appearance were welcome, and in the house one I thought Pierce Brosnan was hilarious in every respect. No, none of it was that Halloweeny, it more was like fantasy/sci-fi jokes for the entire episode. Ryan, I think Kang and Kodos has something to do with Halloween. Aliens always have. Alot of creativity with the "Hex and the City" segment, and some good laughs there. Beautiful animation, as well. Overall grade-A-

I believe I have to agree with whoever said that killing off Bart was a little over the top. I mean, at least tell us HOW he died, you know? Other than that, I thought it was an all-around good episode. One more thing -- why is everybody giving Rowdy such a hard time? As this a message board, differing opinions should be welcome and personally I think he has some good points.

How could any self-respecting Simpsons fan say that last night's crapfest even came close to being "awesome" or "great", let alone "watchable"? Did you have your TVs on?!? Did you see the same episode I did???

- Hex and the City was pathetic. They should be ashamed of this one.
- House of Whacks had some funny parts, but was below average.
- Wiz Kids had some VERY funny moments (Slithers eating Burns, Bart's creation, etc.), but was basically a waste of good source material.

The Shinning was "awesome".
Time and Punishment was "great".
Nightmare Cafeteria was "fantastic".
Homega Man was "hilarious".

THOH XII just sucked. Don't fool yourselves into thinking it was good just because you've missed OFF. Compare it to the classics, and then decide.

I liked it. There were so many things about it that made me laugh. Loved the mmm unexplained bacon, mmm various eggs. I will have to make sound wavs of those. I loved House of Whacks, i thought that was the best of the 3. Im not crazy about Pierce "communist" Brosnan, but he actually made me laugh. That comment about Dennis Miller and his voice causing murder suicides was hilarious.. is anyone part of the Dennis Miller ratio who understood how funny it was?

Hex in the City was pretty funny as well. Loved that leprechaun, thought all that gibberish was funny. "Wake up you drunk!" lol. What was up with those heads that unshrunk? Thought the wedding was funny, "mmm kiss me my clover, say my name" lol. I always love it that Kang and Kodos show up. Marge covered in hair, barts stretched out neck, very funny."You strangle him all the time and that never happens"

I wasn't too crazy about Wiz Kids, personally Harry Potter anything makes me sick. Reminds me of that woman host on weakest link. I did think that Slithers eating burns was the most hilarious thing i have seen in a long time. I could not stop laughing. The sounds he made while he was swallowing him, lol, were just so funny. I am going to make a wav of that too. It's creepy/funny and even perverted! Very, very perverted heheh.

Well, I am still watching this special today. I'm sick and tired of watching news...too bad some may have found fault with THOH. As far as I'm concerned:

Even the worst Simpsons episode is better than having no Simpsons on!

Viva Los Simpsons!

I don't get it, why are people's children even considered when it comes to watching the Simpsons? This is NOT a kids show, for kids miss most of the excellent humor in each show because they have not been around long enough. I still watch Rudolph the Red Nose Raindeer, I'm all grown up, and I know that the show was made for people of all ages. That's what I would have my kids watch, not the Simpsons, until they were old enough to understand.

Simpsons humor is about and for big kids.

Still, this was not such a bad episode, more crude than usual, but good.

Most TV sets have a button that turns the thing off. If unhappy about the programing, I turn to a book. Some folks should do the same. ;)

exactly. i'd take a craptastic simpsons that makes no sense (ie Thirty Minutes over Tokyo) to almost any other show on t.v.

...and the fact that the simpsons are still making fun of terrible pop culture (harry potter, blech) is fabulous.

plus, the halloween episodes are supposed to be disturbing. i don't hear anyone complaining about maggie axe-ing willie to death, but bart drowning in cereal is obviously bothing some of you out there....

In "30 Minutes Over Tokyo", the satire of the Japanese pop culture that has entered America in a "Japanacraze" (Sumo, Origami, Hello Kitty, Godzilla, Electronics etc.) was seamlessly carried off, but that episode wasn't my favorite. The satire was funny, but beyond that, I thought it was a bit weak.

I guess the new Halloween show was okay. I really haven't liked them as much in recent years. Is it just me or do the three segments each feel shorter than they used to. As if they to do more in less time, and leaves the Halloween specials feeling somewhat disjointed. I've thought this about every Halloween Special I've seen after the one with "The Homega Man" and "The Fly." That was the last one I thought had the same quality of the old Halloween specials. I guess I can't judge last year's though, because I missed it and FOX doesn't usually air them again (I mean, on Sunday nights). I'm not judging the new season at all by this episode though, because Halloween episodes just aren't the same as the rest of the shows.

word, i thought that was a pretty good episode... maybe i've gotten used to the stupid humor of recent seasons, but that had my laughing out loud a lot.

hex in the city was good. "after dark use automated teller" made me chuckle and then some...the whole curse thing was a little campy, but okay. i loved the 'flaming jerk' card and if i hadn't seen the trix/lucky charms gag on the commercials a million times, i would have loved that too. the babbling leprechaun was great...that little guy really had me in tears...even when he was sleeping, i thought that was great. and barts rubber neck was hilarious for some sick reason, as was lisa's stomping on the ground... 'two means yes!'... heh heh... it was indeed chaotic, but i liked it overall

brosnan is the man and his act was the best. loved the concept from beginning to end...matthew perry with 'could i BE more of a house?' was absolutely hilarious and brosnan with 'constable wiggum...' was also great. homer coming back into view of the eye and saying 'yep, a machine!' was also great. but what really got me was marge waking up and the picture of the red eye covering homer...that was great. and of course, selma and patty at the end fit in perfectly. ... the only thing was the gore of homer's brain...i thought that was a little over the top...but this was def. the best act

the last was okay. the only exception was the amazingly disgusting, yet hilarious smithers eating mr. burns and the vomiting toad-prince...those two elements were hilarious...but the whole idea wasn't that great in my opinion...but it was still okay...

less scary this time and more parody...but it worked out well for the most part and i really liked it... ....

and by the way, i'm not dead.

Someone help me out; the telephone rang towards the end and I missed the Smithers-eating-Burns gag. (All I saw was him eating Burns and crying.) What was the set-up here? Smithers is a snake, so he eats him like a snake. and, smithers loves mr. burns so he cries.

In this years halloween episode, on the act where the computer thing takes over their house, that's based on a movie exactly like that. I forgot the title though.

I believe that no ToH will outrank the original one. However, this was a good one. I thought I was going to die laughing at the lepruchan. I also loved Homer's line: "I AM missing half of my head! I think you could cut me a little slack!" Smithers' best Halloween persona could have been a snake, and he was. Overall, I give it a B+

The appearance was based on HAL of 2001 Space Odessey too, as well as the way he was deactivated.

Woah! Easy! They were just expressing their opinions, and their as entitled to that as you. Besides, most people here did like the ep, it would seem.

I like the part in the beginning of "Hex And The City" with the fat guy:

Fat Guy Singing: BABAYS WHO WANTS A BABAYS!?
Homer: Hey Wait.. This Is Just A Shaved Puppy..
(Fat Guy Pats Homer On The Back)
Fat Guy: I Can See You Know Babays..

 That part had me laughing out loud!

It's my favorite scene in that whole episode! Just curious here :)

Just a titbit for those who were complaining about the wacky endings of episodes last season, "The Parent Rap" on Sunday is supposed to have a 'warm and fuzzy ending', according to a New York Daily News reviewer. Look forward to that.

Something I noticed: The shaved puppies in that scene look conspicuosly like the early Bimbo in pre-code Betty Boop cartoons from around, say, 1930.

Yes!!! I am so happy that someone (apart from myself) did not think THOH was perfect. It was good, witty, but not "the best in years." It seems many people preferred "Hex in the City" over "Wiz Kids."

"Hex in the City." I thought the leprechaun bits were great, but not excellent. The Kang/Kodos appearance was out of place (and a little silly), but overall, it was still a good run.

"Wiz Kids" was much better. The frog-prince was gross, but funny because it fit in this kind of episode. I liked Burns actually being in character this time, and Milhouse' flop in the talent show was hilarious (it reminded me of "My ding-a-ling, my ding-a-ling....").

My least favorite was "House of Whacks." Don't get me wrong, the premise was fine, and Homer's "she's free for man or machine" reiteration was funny, but did they really have to let the viewers know, over and over again, that it was Pierce Brosnan who voiced the computer? Why did they have to call it "Pierce." Sometimes, the dialog slipped, "Hello, I'm missing the back of my head," could have been better....(but that's just me bitching unnecessarily). It did make a great comeback with Selma and Patty (Yes! Finally).

Overall, the episode was great...Season 8 great (and I don't say that a lot about recent episodes).

I didn't dislike it but almost the best ever? You gotta be kidding me! The first 8 were all classic, and this one was merely average.

Definately not the best in years! They started to lax when they became supernatural/fantasy, and not the pure, bloodcurdling horror we all LoOove. They ran out of horrific ideas, and it became the years chance for the writers to go crazy.

The Monkey's Paw Sequence of THOH 2 is based on the short story "The Monkey's Paw" I know for sure that this is a fact. I read the full story in my 10th Grade English class this year. The only difference between this part of the ep and the original story is what the characters wish for. I won't ruin the ending. Read it yourself! Pretty chilling!

As for this year's THOH, I have to say it was pretty good. It seems like so long we've gone without a brand new episode of the Simpsons.

Best appearances: Lisa as a centaur, Kang and Kodos, Yoda (of course-that was hilarious!), and the Vomiting Toad-like Freak of Nature.

Best Quotes: "Excellent work Batsie!" -Burns

"Chlorea! I have Chlorea! Cough!!! Cough!!!"

"Husband and Wife I pronounce you now."-Yoda

"Hee-hee! Dying Tickles!" -Ralph

Overall I give it an A minus.

Man, this reminds me of the time I said that Days of Wine and D'ohses was bad. You (Mr. Irvine) don't need to flame someone for not liking the same things you do. This isn't a communist country where we all have to do what everyone else does or follow "the Springfield mentality." That's probably why I was the only person for quite a few posts that didn't like the episode. Everyone else who disliked THOH XII was hiding from the harsh words said by people that did like it........or watching the episode again to see if it really was that bad...........

I enjoyed this episode. Not a classic TOH, but still a lot of fun.

Pierce Brosnan's stint in "House of Whacks" and Mr. Burns and Smithers, or should I say Lord Montymort and Slithers, in "Wiz Kids" were my favorite elements.
